    Supportive senior community, occasional cleanliness

I've lived here 14+ years and feel lucky - the community truly feels like family, the building is well-maintained and safety is prioritized. It's an excellent, affordable option for seniors 62+ (long waitlist ~2 years) and far better than the 55+ housing I had before. Downsides: the neighborhood is run-down with crime, and manager turnover/staff inaction have led to unprofessional language, occasional hallway urine odor, and cleanliness issues. Still highly recommend for low-income seniors seeking secure, caring housing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the provided reviews is mixed but leans positive among long-term residents. Multiple long-term occupants (9 and 14+ years) emphasize that Columbia Terrace is a safe, secure, and well-maintained place to live, particularly for low-income seniors who need affordable housing. Residents repeatedly describe the buildings as being in good repair, and several specifically state they feel lucky or fortunate to live there. The community atmosphere is a clear strength: reviewers describe a familial feeling among residents and recommend the facility strongly to other seniors over 62. The facility’s popularity is reflected by a substantial waitlist (around two years), suggesting strong demand and resident satisfaction overall.

Care and day-to-day support: none of the summaries provide detailed information about clinical or medical care services, so no conclusions can be drawn about clinical care quality. However, in terms of day-to-day living support, residents emphasize safety and security measures as notable positives. The facility is repeatedly described as more secure and better than previous 55+ housing some residents experienced, which suggests that basic oversight, building security, and maintenance systems function well.

Staff and management: reviews show a mixed picture. Several reviewers praise staff generally and recommend the community, but there are important complaints about management. Manager turnover is mentioned, and at least one review calls out a manager as "mean" and using unprofessional language. There are also reports of staff inaction when residents raised hygiene and cleanliness concerns (specifically a persistent urine odor in a hallway). These points indicate variability in staff behavior and responsiveness — while many residents feel supported and safe, there are reported lapses in professionalism and follow-through at the management level that affect resident experiences.

Facilities and cleanliness: most comments cite well-maintained buildings and cleanliness as strengths, yet there are contradictory reports about common-area hygiene. A notable negative report describes a pee odor in a hallway and perceived inaction by staff, implying that cleanliness can be inconsistent, particularly in shared spaces. Physically, the buildings appear to be in good repair, and the overall upkeep is seen as better than comparable housing by several residents. The combination of generally good maintenance with occasional sanitation lapses is a pattern worth noting.

Neighborhood and access: an important recurring theme is the surrounding neighborhood. Reviewers describe the area as run-down with high crime, which creates a contrast between the secure internal environment of Columbia Terrace and the external neighborhood conditions. While residents feel safe inside the property, the neighborhood context may be a concern for prospective residents and visitors. Additionally, the long waitlist (about two years) is both an indicator of desirability and a practical drawback for those seeking timely placement.

Activities and dining: the summaries provided contain no substantive information about dining services, meal quality, recreational activities, or programming. The absence of comments in these areas means there is insufficient data to assess food service or the activity calendar — prospective residents should inquire directly with the facility for details.

Overall assessment: Columbia Terrace appears to be a reliable, well-maintained, and secure option for low-income seniors who prioritize safety and a strong resident community. Long-term residents speak highly of the place and feel it offers good value and a family-like atmosphere. The facility’s main weaknesses, based on these reviews, are external neighborhood safety concerns, intermittent cleanliness problems in shared areas (notably urine odor reported by at least one reviewer), and management-related issues including turnover and at least one instance of unprofessional behavior. For prospective residents, the positives around safety, maintenance, affordability, and community should be weighed against the neighborhood context, potential responsiveness issues with management, and the lengthy waitlist. If possible, an in-person visit focusing on common-area cleanliness and a conversation with current residents about staff responsiveness and management stability would help clarify whether Columbia Terrace is the right fit.

The community's friendly, too-staff go out of their way to be helpful and kind, whether it's a smile in the hallway or lending a hand with simple chores, and there's a clear focus on making everyone feel they belong, so nobody feels left out. Columbia Terrace Retirement has services for a variety of needs, like assisted living for folks who need help with things like daily activities, taking medicine, personal care, and meals, and then there's independent living, where seniors can do their own thing but still have support options if something comes up.

Seniors with more complicated health or memory concerns can get skilled nursing here, with round-the-clock care, help with wound care, and rehab if they need it, and for residents with Alzheimer's or dementia, there's a special memory care wing that offers secure spaces and programs to help manage confusion and reduce wandering, alongside activities aimed at memory support. The apartments come in different sizes, and some are on the ground floor with outdoor patios; all are air-conditioned, include fire sprinklers and emergency pull cords, and the building's four stories has an elevator, indoor mailboxes, and locked doors for safety, plus video surveillance for extra security. Residents can do laundry in-house, use resident computers with internet, and bring their pets, and there's a community room for games or parties and lots of social activities, as well as fitness centers.

Meals are prepared on-site using quality ingredients and there's a focus on good nutrition, and the grounds are kept landscaped and peaceful, which gives people a quiet retreat right at home. The facility maintains a smoke-free environment, and the whole place is set up for long-term living, with routines and staff who keep things running smoothly and do routine maintenance as needed. Columbia Terrace Retirement offers respite care, too, so caretakers get relief and residents can stay temporarily, and the community aims to provide affordable housing for seniors, making sure there's a balance of support, safety, and a social environment where people can enjoy retirement without feeling overwhelmed.
