    Compassionate staff excellent food culture

I live here and I'm very pleased. The staff are awesome, helpful and genuinely loving - the atmosphere and one-of-a-kind culture shine through. Food is delicious, activities plentiful, care is high-quality and affordable (no surprise there's a waiting list). We endured great loss during the pandemic shutdown, but the staff's compassion left me grateful - I highly recommend this place.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Providence ElderPlace Marie Smith Alternate Care Setting is strongly positive. Reviewers repeatedly emphasize the quality of care and the warmth of the staff, and many explicitly recommend the program. Positive comments cover staff behavior, the social and cultural environment, dining, programming, affordability, and the program's mission. The dominant impression is of a well-run, compassionate setting that provides meaningful interactions and practical support, particularly for people with fewer resources.

Care quality and staff performance are central themes. Multiple reviewers describe staff as helpful, loving, caring, awesome, and great. That language suggests consistent, day-to-day attentiveness and relational care rather than purely transactional services. Reviewers specifically call out an emphasis on quality interactions, which indicates staff focus on person-centered engagement and social connection. The repeated praise and explicit recommendations point to a high degree of satisfaction with how residents and families are treated.

Facilities and offered services are also noted positively. Dining receives favorable remarks with mentions of delicious food. Programming is described as diverse, with a wide variety of activities available; that breadth of activities supports both social engagement and stimulation for participants. Reviewers also describe an amazing atmosphere and a culture that is 'one of a kind,' suggesting that the setting fosters a distinctive, welcoming environment beyond basic care tasks.

Affordability and mission are recurring strengths. Several reviews highlight the program as an affordable option and as a good concept for individuals with fewer resources. This dual positioning — delivering high-quality care while remaining accessible — is a notable theme and appears to be a major factor in reviewers' appreciation. Expressions of gratitude in the summaries reinforce the sense that the program fills an important community need and is valued by families and participants.

The most significant concerns raised are about access and the impact of the pandemic. Multiple reviewers mention a waiting list or high demand, which indicates limited capacity and can be a barrier for prospective participants. The pandemic shutdown is also cited as a cause of 'great loss,' implying interruptions to services or community life that were deeply felt. While these issues do not reflect on the day-to-day care quality described, they are important operational and emotional considerations: demand exceeds supply, and external events like the pandemic have disrupted the program and community connection.

In summary, the reviews portray Providence ElderPlace Marie Smith Alternate Care Setting as a compassionate, well-regarded program with strong staff engagement, high-quality care, enjoyable dining, robust activities, and an affordable, mission-driven model. The primary negatives are structural or situational rather than care-related: limited capacity resulting in waitlists and losses tied to pandemic shutdowns. For families prioritizing relational care, social programming, and affordability, these reviews suggest the program is a highly recommended option, though prospective participants should be aware of potential wait times and the program's history of pandemic-related disruption.

About Providence ElderPlace Marie Smith Alternate Care Setting

Providence ElderPlace Marie Smith Alternate Care Setting, located at 4616 N. Albina Ave in Portland, Oregon, offers elder care through an adult day center and assisted living aimed at helping older adults and people with disabilities live with dignity and support, so people can come as many days or half-days as they need and get care in a secure setting, with staff who help with bathing, grooming, incontinence, and give medication reminders, and they've got registered nurses who check health and keep an eye on medication. The place runs from 7:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the afternoon, Monday through Friday, or sometimes they say from 8 am to 5 pm, and people can get meals, snacks, and beverages, plus there are activities like yoga, art, music, gardening, and therapies for memory and motor skills, so those with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke, dementia, disabilities, or other special needs get some stimulation and help breaking up the day. The center has safe outdoor and indoor areas, a low-stimulation room, garden access, and is bariatric accessible, serving as an alternate care setting under the broader Providence ElderPlace and PACE program, where the care plan gets built around the person's needs, and there's a focus on forming friendships, giving respite for caregivers, and reducing the sense of being alone. There's also a clinic with on-site healthcare, urgent and primary care services, and help with virtual appointments and MyChart, and the staff-including social workers and therapists-work to coordinate everything, from doctor visits to counseling, to help people keep as much independence as possible. The program takes Medicaid and Oregon Project Independence, supporting those who would otherwise struggle to get by at home, and the staff work with local partners and offer health classes, wellness programs, and counseling, making sure the care combines social, medical, housing, and community help in a way that fits the older adult's life, so that people get a sense of purpose and support at any stage of aging.
