    Beautiful facility ruined by management

I love the country setting, great weather, and the recent facility and dining upgrades - arrivals are pleasant with friendly, smiling staff and button-operated doors. But turnover and chronically overworked staff have created an unloving atmosphere and inconsistent, sometimes inadequate care; the bus won't accommodate power chairs, availability/Medicaid info felt misrepresented, and private-pay costs are high. Worst of all, I've witnessed suspected narcotics theft and staff drug use. Beautiful place, ruined by poor management and staffing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Deer Meadow Assisted Living is mixed and polarized. Several reviewers highlight clear positives: the facility is located in a pleasant country setting with good weather, and recent investments have been made in facility upgrades and dining improvements. Some residents or families report a welcoming environment with friendly staff and smiling people, accessible features such as button-operated doors, and the facility accepts Medicaid. A subset of reviewers explicitly describe their stay as pleasant and say the pricing was very reasonable.

However, these positive notes are frequently counterbalanced by significant and recurring concerns about management, staffing, and care quality. Multiple reviews describe staff as overworked and stressed, and some note a recent loss of key management personnel that has coincided with the arrival of new staff who have been perceived as creating an "unloving" or less compassionate atmosphere. Several comments frame this as a situation where money has been invested in physical upgrades and food but those investments are being undermined by chronic staffing problems. Staffing shortages are named repeatedly and are linked to reports of inadequate personal care and poor oversight.

Safety and serious misconduct allegations appear in more than one review summary and are among the most alarming themes: there are direct accusations that staff have stolen narcotics and that staff provided illegal drugs. These reports point to potential systemic control and supervision failures, and they intensify concerns already raised about management and staffing. Alongside these safety issues, reviewers also report misrepresentation of bed or service availability during intake or inquiries, suggesting problems with administrative transparency.

Operational and accessibility issues are also noted. The facility bus reportedly cannot accommodate power chairs, which limits transport options for residents who rely on heavy mobility devices and could restrict participation in off-site activities. At the same time, some accessibility features inside the building (like button-operated doors) are viewed positively. Financial impressions are mixed: several reviewers point out high private-pay pricing, while others say pricing was very reasonable and highlight Medicaid acceptance — indicating varied experiences depending on payer status or individual circumstances.

In summary, Deer Meadow appears to have two concurrent narratives: one of a physically upgraded, pleasant-location community with improved dining and welcoming moments, and another of operational instability where staffing shortages, management turnover, and serious allegations of misconduct compromise care and safety. Prospective residents and their families should weigh the facility's tangible improvements and reported friendly interactions against repeated reports of inadequate staffing, management problems, accessibility limitations for power chairs on transportation, and the very serious claims about narcotics and illegal drugs. These patterns suggest that while the environment and amenities may be appealing to some, there are ongoing systemic issues that merit thorough, specific inquiry (staffing levels and schedules, medication controls, management stability, transportation capacity, and documentation of availability) before making a placement decision.

    About Deer Meadow Assisted Living

Deer Meadow Assisted Living Community sits in Sheridan, Oregon, right on W Main Street in a quiet country area where deer often wander, and it really has that small, welcoming feel from the moment you show up. The units all have washers, dryers, and kitchenettes, which is nice for folks who want a bit of independence, and choices range from small studios to one-bedroom apartments and shared layouts, all with button-operated doors to help anyone with mobility problems. The whole place has wide hallways, an interior courtyard, outdoor patios for some fresh air, and no steps since it's a single level, so moving around is pretty easy for most residents.

There's plenty to keep busy with, since there's a movie room, game room, library, computer section with Wi-Fi, arts and crafts studio, and a fitness center, plus a wellness spa for those who want to keep up their routines. Scheduled activities run throughout the day-movie nights, music, wellness programs, devotional services, and even resident-run groups-plus family meetings and food councils where residents get a say in what goes on. The dining area is well-lit and they serve three A-La Carte meals every day, made to fit special diets like for diabetes, and the staff takes care of the cooking, cleaning, and laundry, so folks really don't have to worry about those chores.

Safety comes up a lot, since every unit has in-room pull cords and emergency pendants, plus the place runs a 24-hour call system and only uses secure, keypad entry, so you always know someone can help right away. There's standby help for transfers, help with daily living-like bathing, dressing, toileting, and getting meals if needed-and the staff will manage medications. The community has a registered nurse on staff, monthly nurse check-ins, 12-16 hour nursing care, and monthly doctor visits for overall wellness, and respite care is available if caregivers need a break. For extra support, there's memory care, mental wellness programs, and hospice care in partnership with outside providers.

Deer Meadow lets residents keep cats or dogs, so long as they follow the rules. No one can smoke inside, which keeps the place clean. Apartments are fully furnished and come with air-conditioning, cable TV, telephones, and high-definition TVs. The maintenance crew keeps the units and grounds tidy, while the beauty salon covers hair and grooming needs. Free transportation is offered for trips into town to places like Sheridan Medical Center and local pharmacies, or for other appointments and errands. Residents age 55 and older can age in place since care plans adjust as their needs change, and everyone in the community-staff and neighbors alike-bring a friendly and caring touch that feels more like family than anything fancy. Deer Meadow tries to balance comfort, safety, and community in a simple, down-to-earth way, and the country setting and small size mean everyone gets to know each other.
