    Beautiful comfortable caring affordable dog-friendly

I'm planning to retire here - it's a beautiful, hotel-like building, very clean and nicely decorated with updated, comfortable apartments and plenty of public space. The staff are warm, caring and helpful; nurses know residents and go above and beyond. Meals are good with flexible options, live entertainment and lots of activities (exercise, games, socials), plus transportation to appointments. It's affordable, dog-friendly, and feels like home - one caveat: it's not set up for advanced memory/high-acuity care and some units may have a wait.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across reviews of Harrison House Chester County is strongly positive with consistent praise for the quality of care, the caregiving staff, the social environment, and recent facility improvements. The most frequently mentioned strengths are the compassionate, attentive, and often long-tenured staff; nurses and aides who know residents by name; and 24-hour nursing support with on-site med techs. Many reviewers singled out therapy teams (OT/PT), hospice services, and staff who go beyond expectations to support residents and families, which together paint a picture of a community that prioritizes resident dignity, safety, and individualized care.

Activities and social life are another major positive theme. The facility is described as buzzing and lively — live music (piano and bands), entertainers, games (bingo), crafts, exercise classes, wine-and-cheese events and regular outings are commonly cited. Residents and families repeatedly noted that participation is optional and that the activity calendar is broad and diversified, contributing to a home-like, community-oriented atmosphere. Multiple public rooms, libraries on floors, cafeterias, a salon and hobby spaces provide plentiful venues for socializing and private visits, which reviewees appreciated.

Dining and meal service receive strong approval overall. Reviewers report a chef-driven menu, flexible meal options, restaurant-style dining rooms, and well-presented meals. Several people described the dining room as having a positive vibe and restaurant-level service, with the option to opt in or out of meals. A few comments mentioned occasional food temperature issues or that some reviewers planned to add evening meals later, but these were exceptions within a generally favorable consensus about food quality and variety.

Facilities and apartments present a mixed but largely positive picture. Many reviews highlight recent renovations, updated and spacious one-bedroom apartments, clean common areas, wide corridors and abundant elevators. Amenities often praised include a gym/weight room, beauty/barber services, two large free laundry rooms per floor, gardens/patios, transportation services, and dog-friendly policies. The building’s size and layout give rise to many gathering spaces and a “hotel-like” or high-end feel in parts of the community. Reviewers also noted practical advantages like card-key security, Wi‑Fi, and parking in back.

However, there are several consistent concerns that prospective residents and families should weigh. The site occupies a former hospital footprint, which creates a quirky layout in places (columns, HVAC placements) that can make some units awkward to personalize; small studio or one-room units were repeatedly called compact and cluttered. A notable operational limitation is the absence of memory care and repeated comments that the community cannot accommodate higher-acuity or progressive care needs; some reviewers specifically warned that staff levels may not be sufficient to safely manage falls or advanced medical needs. Availability is another pragmatic issue: a waiting list is mentioned multiple times, indicating demand and potential delays to move-in.

The most serious negative pattern in the reviews is the report of pest problems — several respondents specifically cited roaches in kitchens, resident rooms, laundry rooms and couches. These reports stand out against an otherwise consistent narrative of cleanliness and are a significant red flag that families should investigate during a tour. Other negatives that surfaced less frequently include mixed impressions about the surrounding neighborhood (some called the location near steelworks run-down), occasional comments about small or limited outdoor areas, and a few reports of minimal staffing or an impersonal apartment-building feel. A small number of reviewers were not impressed by staff or felt the facility functioned primarily as independent apartments rather than a full-service community.

In summary, Harrison House Chester County is repeatedly praised for its warm, caring staff, broad activity programming, attractive renovated common areas, and strong clinical supports like 24-hour nursing and therapy services. It suits prospective residents seeking an active, community-oriented setting with flexible dining and an apartment-style living model — and it appears especially affordable for those on a state pension. Key caveats are the lack of on-site memory care and limitations in accommodating advanced-care needs, concerns about pest control in some reports, the idiosyncratic former-hospital layout that yields some small or awkward units, and possible neighborhood drawbacks. Families considering Harrison House should tour multiple times (ideally with specific questions about pest remediation, staffing levels for higher-acuity care, and availability) and compare available unit sizes to ensure layout and personalization options meet the resident’s needs.

    About Harrison House Chester County

Harrison House Chester County sits in East Fallowfield, Pennsylvania, in what used to be a neighborhood hospital and has been serving seniors since 1972, run by the Harrison family since James and Katherine started it. The community keeps a family-owned and welcoming feel, and it has owners and staff who help out and even answer call bells themselves. Residents will find a mix of independent living, personal care, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and rehabilitation services, all in the same building. Housing choices include cozy studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom apartments, and some floorplans offer a den, so folks can pick the space that fits what they want. The building's been updated and gives people choices between private or semi-private rooms, all furnished and with features like private bathrooms, Wi-Fi, high-speed internet, cable TV, air conditioning, and kitchenettes. Pets are welcome, and there's guest parking with handicap access and wheelchair accessibility.

The dining room serves restaurant-style meals cooked by a professional chef, and staff can handle allergy concerns and medical diet needs like diabetes-friendly meals. Food is a big deal here, so they'll prep things that suit most dietary restrictions. The facility covers daily basics, including housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and even coordination when moving in, while transportation helps residents get to appointments and outings. Staff can help with medicine reminders, bathing, dressing, and getting to meals or activities, and the wellness office brings fitness programs and health care to residents who need them. There's outpatient therapy right on-site for those who need physical, occupational, or speech therapy, plus pharmacy delivery and arrangements for medical appointments. On top of all that, folks can also get respite care for short stays or if families need time away.

Community life features a steady calendar of programs and events-art, music, movie nights, game room activities, a library, and community-sponsored outings, and residents can run their own activities too. Outdoor patios and lounge spaces make spots to sit and socialize, while walking paths, the spa/wellness room, and fitness center allow movement and relaxation without leaving the grounds. The theater and activity rooms keep neighbors busy, and there's no expectation for buy-in or entrance fees, which some families find helpful. The community works with both private pay and long-term care insurance, with costs based on the level of care needed. The original Chester County location holds about 80 units, but the Harrison House name also appears in Salisbury, Maryland, and Georgetown, Delaware.

Harrison House Chester County supports independence for healthy, active seniors but gives more care and supervision when someone needs it, covering everything from daily help to skilled nursing and special memory care. The staff includes nurses and trained workers who look after everyone and keep things running smoothly, and all departments work together. Family support services help keep loved ones informed and involved, which makes the place feel more personal. The big focus stays on safety, comfort, dignity, and helping people keep up active, connected lives, letting them enjoy meals, activities, and friendships with ease and less worry.
