    Spotless campus, compassionate staff, inconsistent

I appreciate the spotless, well-kept campus, great food, vibrant activities and many attentive, compassionate staff - it feels safe and community-oriented. However, I've also encountered rude/unhelpful employees, restrictive visitor policies and inconsistent nursing care (including a serious safety lapse), so quality and professionalism can vary.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is predominantly positive but punctuated by several serious negative reports that point to important inconsistencies. A majority of reviewers praise Frederick Living for its compassionate caregiving, clean and attractive campus, varied activities, and strong sense of community. Many family members and residents highlight staff who are attentive, know residents (and family members) by name, and create a warm, communal atmosphere. The facility is repeatedly described as spotless, with meticulously kept grounds and comfortable, spacious independent living units (villas/cottages) with bright sunrooms and vaulted ceilings. The rural, country setting with convenient access to shopping, dining, movies, and healthcare is appreciated by residents who say it feels like the right decision for their lifestyle.

Care quality and staff performance are the most frequently discussed themes, and they show a clear split in experiences. Numerous reviewers applaud the nursing, enrichment, and transport staff by name and report excellent day-to-day care, strong communication, a focus on wellness, and supportive transitions (including memory care in some cases). Specific staff members receive praise for being kind, proactive, and compassionate; reviewers report that staff often go beyond basic duties to engage residents and families. Conversely, a smaller but highly significant subset of reviews alleges serious care failures: life-threatening nursing errors, poor nurse communication, and an allegation that a physical therapist did not follow a walker directive leading to a fracture. These reports describe lapses that go beyond service dissatisfaction and suggest risks to safety when they occur. Reviewers also mention inconsistent staff behavior — some people encounter rude, cold, or impatient employees — indicating variability across teams or shifts.

Dining, activities, and therapies are clear strengths in the reviews. Meals receive widespread positive comments for quality and variety, with both dining room and bistro options noted. Activities are varied and frequent: choir practice, Bible studies and ministerial counseling, bingo, off-site trips, live music performances, shows for residents, a weight room, and other enrichment programs create an engaged and social community. On-site physical and occupational therapy services and routine medical monitoring (blood pressure and glucose checks) were also highlighted as meaningful supports for residents’ health and independence.

Operational and administrative themes are mixed. Several reviewers praise efficient management and a positive partnership with Garden Spot Communities, noting well-run operations and good communication with families. However, others report administrative problems such as poor laundry service, restrictive visitor policies (including limits on visitors’ ability to assist residents with walkers or take residents offsite), rejection of applications or placement on waitlists, and perceptions of discriminatory treatment. There are also comments about poor treatment of employees; such reports can affect morale and could contribute to the inconsistent service experiences described by other reviewers.

Taken together, the reviews suggest that Frederick Living offers many hallmarks of a strong senior living community — cleanliness, appealing facilities, robust dining and activities, and many devoted staff members who foster a warm community. At the same time, the presence of several serious safety and administrative complaints points to notable variability in care and operations. Families and prospective residents should weigh the consistently praised aspects (community feel, food, activities, campus, many caring staff) against the documented concerns (serious nursing incidents, communication breakdowns, inconsistent staff demeanor, and operational restrictions). The reviews support asking targeted questions during tours or consultations about nurse staffing and supervision, therapy protocols and follow-up, incident reporting and resolution, visitor policies, laundry and other ancillary services, and employee retention/training to better understand how the facility addresses the inconsistencies reported by some reviewers.

    About Frederick Living

Frederick Living sits on 80 acres and has been serving older adults for nearly 130 years, with strong roots in Mennonite heritage and a focus on dignity and autonomy for every person, and while it's faith-based, people of all faiths are welcome; you'll find a warm, close-knit, and family-like community here where folks tend to know each other and staff behave in a friendly, helpful, and joyful way. The community works as a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community and offers a wide range of support including independent living in apartments, cottages, and villas, and maintenance-free homes so active, healthy seniors can get on with hobbies, volunteering, and a social life without worrying about repairs, and there's the Oaktree Court Apartments right at the center of things and The Meadows, a pocket neighborhood, along with the bigger options like the Cottages or Villas that give some privacy and extra room. If someone needs more support, there are things like assisted living studio or one-bedroom apartments in Magnus House and services to help with bathing, dressing, medication, and daily needs, and there's specialized care for folks with memory challenges through Aspen Village Memory Care, with activities and environments set up to limit confusion and keep people safe from wandering. They don't skip over health care, either, and for short or long term care or after a hospital stay, there's Cedarwood Health Center for rehab and skilled nursing that covers things like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and residents can get diabetic care, incontinence care, and help if they're unable to move about easily, while the campus includes an adult daycare center and offers home care with trained aides for those who still live at home but need a hand now and then. The place hosts all sorts of activities, both on and off site, from devotional gatherings to social events and wellness programs for body, mind, and spirit, and the amenities include common spaces, a library, exercise room, bank, and a chapel, plus living rooms and activity areas so there's always a way to be connected or enjoy some quiet time. Everyone gets access to nourishing meals, and cleaning and transportation are part of regular services, along with personal care programs like help with showering and dressing, and if health or support needs change, the community's got that whole continuum of care on the same property, which means residents can often stay put while getting the new care they need, whether it's independent living, personal care, memory support, or skilled nursing. Folks pay only for the services they need, which eases some costs, and the whole campus promotes a purpose-driven way of living called Life with Purpose™, encouraging people to be active and engaged, so in the end Frederick Living gives a real range of choices for older adults who want connection, support, and different types of care, all in a friendly place that feels like home.
