    Beautiful, caring but costly staffing

I toured and moved my mom here. The place is beautiful, clean, and homey; staff are warm, compassionate and often very professional. Meals, activities, and memory-care programming are strong and nursing appears competent. Major drawbacks: high cost, frequent staff turnover and staffing shortages that slow responses and crowd dining, plus billing problems and poor family communication. Overall I'm glad she's safe and engaged, but management and staffing need to improve.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Sunrise of Haverford is mixed-to-positive, with numerous families and residents praising the community's caring staff, warm atmosphere, and robust activity programming. A strong and recurring theme is that many caregivers, nurses, and support staff are viewed as compassionate, attentive, and dedicated; reviewers repeatedly emphasize personal attention, quick responses to maintenance requests, and staff who know residents by name. The physical plant receives positive remarks as well — reviewers describe clean, well-maintained, home-like common areas, a beautiful entrance, and many on-site amenities such as a Bistro, library, movie theater, salon, game room, courtyards/porches, and in-house clinical services (podiatrist, visiting doctors). Memory care is frequently highlighted as a strength: structured daily routines, abundant activities, courtyard access, and secure programs were noted to benefit residents with cognitive impairment.

Dining and activities are another strong positive thread. A large number of reviewers praise the chef-prepared meals, delicious aromas, varied entree choices, breakfast options, and the ability to accommodate special dishes or dietary needs. At the same time, some reviewers report inconsistent food quality — complaints about cold food, limited menus, or taste issues appear alongside glowing descriptions of meals described as "divine." Activities programming is extensive and diverse: frequent events (bingo, choir, yoga, art, exercises, outings, shopping trips), an upbeat activities director, and meaningful daily engagement are commonly cited and contribute to residents' reported happiness and socialization. Many families note that their loved ones have thrived socially, gained weight back, or become more engaged since moving in.

Despite these positives, there are consistent operational concerns that prospective families should weigh carefully. Staffing shortages and high turnover are repeatedly mentioned, and many reviewers link these issues to slower response times, occasional lapses in service, and increased strain on remaining staff. Several reviews call out the need for stronger top-level management, better orientation for new residents, clearer billing practices, and improved communication between administration, nursing, and families. Specific administrative criticisms include billing problems, unclear or rapidly increasing fees, and instances where families felt misled during move-in about care level or roommate situations. A subset of reviews raises serious policy or rights concerns — examples include visitation bans at holidays, privacy violations, police involvement, and contentious COVID/vaccination policies — while these appear less common, they are significant and were strongly reported by those affected.

Other recurring drawbacks are practical and infrastructural: limited usable outdoor space and short walkways for ambulatory residents or those using walkers/wheelchairs; small property size and constrained grounds; and limited parking that can be crowded at times. A few reviewers specifically note that the facility feels small for long-term living, or better suited to short respite stays. There is also variability in housekeeping and food service quality across different reviewers, as well as occasional reports of rude or inattentive staff — though these appear to be isolated incidents amid many positive accounts. Some reviewers cite licensing limits (Board and Care restrictions such as no bedrails) that might affect eligibility or the level of care provided.

In summary, Sunrise of Haverford is frequently described as a warm, home-like community with many amenities, an active social calendar, and staff who genuinely care for residents. Memory care services and in-house clinical supports are noted strengths. However, persistent staffing challenges, communication and management issues, high costs, and some variability in food and housekeeping quality temper the overall picture. A minority of reviews allege serious policy or safety concerns, which prospective families should probe further. Recommendations for families considering Sunrise of Haverford include touring multiple times, asking specific questions about current staffing levels and turnover, clarifying fee structures and billing practices, reviewing visitation and privacy policies, verifying care limitations tied to licensing, and speaking with current residents and families about day-to-day operations and how the community handled recent staffing or pandemic-related challenges.

    About Sunrise of Haverford

Sunrise of Haverford takes a person-centered care approach where the staff really does try to get to know each resident, focusing on respect and individuality, and you can see that in the way the Designated Care Managers and Life Enrichment Managers organize daily life based on what people want or need, so there are different programs for independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, short-term stays, hospice care, and even Dignity Home Care. There's a special Reminiscence Neighborhood for people with Alzheimer's or other types of memory loss that's set up to reduce confusion and help residents feel safe, with dedicated caregivers around the clock for companionship and support. You'll find everything from walking and wheelchair help to a full activities program with art classes, fitness, games, educational events, and day trips to Philadelphia and Ardmore, which isn't far away, and those excursions are planned with safety and support in mind.

The building itself has lots of thoughtful details, like handrails in the hallways, safety features such as sprinkler systems, handicap-accessible areas, and even a model bathroom, which is good for anyone who might worry about moving around. The place is pet-friendly, so residents can keep their pets, and there are cozy indoor sitting areas, activity rooms, a game room, and a lobby, plus a wrap-around porch and a little secret garden outside, which people like for visits or quiet relaxing. There's Wi-Fi throughout, cable TV, and a bistro for snacks all day, and you can dine in the big dining room with chef-prepared meals made from fresh ingredients, or request suite dining if you want it quieter, plus special events like cooking classes, holiday meals, chef demonstrations, Sunday brunches, and generational dinners.

If someone needs help with bathing, dressing, or medication, personal care assistants are there, and laundry and housekeeping are handled regularly, so you don't have to worry about chores. Room options include kitchens or kitchenettes, and some have washers and dryers, and there's on-site therapy-physical and occupational-with medical support like nurses, wound care, podiatry, and medication management right in the community. Residents with higher needs can get skilled nursing care, and there's hospice care for those who need comfort at the end of life, so you see a wide range of support under one roof, and the front-line staff has been around so long that folks say it feels familiar and steady.

For memory care, the community offers specialized programs and safe layouts to help those with dementia or Alzheimer's live with more comfort and fewer worries about wandering, with activities centered on their needs so they're engaged but not overwhelmed. Maintenance and building services are covered, and scheduled transportation helps residents get to appointments and run errands, so family doesn't have to take care of every little trip. The electronic health record system, Sunrise CareConnect, keeps track of care and makes updates easier for the team. Residents can choose independent, maintenance-free living if they're healthy and active, or move into assisted living or memory care when they need more help. Sunrise of Haverford has been doing this for over thirty-five years, with meals and activities winning awards for quality and variety, but the real highlight is how staff and residents build strong bonds over time.
