    Mostly excellent; lacks skilled nursing

I placed my mom at Country Meadows Hershey and was mostly very happy - warm, professional and caring staff; engaged leadership; clean, bright, homey facility; great activities, therapy/rehab services, good food and pet-friendly grounds. Move-in was smooth, staff listened to stories, personalized care gave us real peace of mind. One major caveat: this site has no certified skilled nursing - we had to transfer when higher-level nursing was needed - and I'd advise confirming dementia/night-shift/medication practices ahead of time because I heard a few concerning reports. For independent/assisted living or outpatient rehab it's outstanding; for advanced skilled nursing, verify first.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Country Meadows Retirement Community are overwhelmingly positive in tone, with frequent and consistent praise for the staff, cleanliness, activities, dining, and the community atmosphere. Most reviewers describe a warm, home-like environment where residents are treated with kindness, dignity, and respect. Many families emphasize peace of mind after placement — noting smooth transitions, attentive communication, and strong caregiver engagement. There is a clear recurring theme that staff across departments (nursing, med techs, dining services, maintenance, housekeeping, activities, and administration) are the standout strength of the community.

Care quality and staff: The dominant pattern in the reviews is high-quality personalized care provided by compassionate and professional staff. Reviewers name specific employees and leaders (for example, Kris Parmer, Jen Wolfe, Shannon, and Chef Mark) as responsive and effective, and multiple accounts describe staff going "above and beyond." Nursing, aides, and therapy teams are repeatedly called caring, patient, and attentive; physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are singled out as effective and helpful for recovery and rehabilitation. Families report excellent coordination with hospice (Lifesong) and praise the dignified end-of-life care. However, the positive narrative is tempered by a number of isolated but serious complaints — including medication delays, allegations of sleeping or unqualified night shift staff, and missed fall assessments — that indicate there are occasional, significant lapses in clinical oversight for some residents. These serious negative reports are comparatively few but important to note.

Facilities, safety, and accessibility: Reviewers consistently describe the physical environment as clean, bright, and aesthetically pleasing, with many notes about recent renovations and well-maintained common spaces (dining rooms, exercise rooms, library, patios, walking paths). Apartments are described as comfortable and some offer full kitchens and in-unit laundry; several reviewers specifically appreciated one-bedroom suites with patios. Safety features are emphasized (grab bars, walk-in showers, wide doors/rails, medical alert devices, and daily checks), and many families cite these features as important reasons for choosing Country Meadows. One structural limitation mentioned repeatedly is that this site does not provide certified skilled nursing on-site, meaning residents who require advanced skilled nursing care may need transfer to another facility.

Dining and amenities: Dining is another frequent strength: reviewers praise a private chef, flexible menu options, restaurant-style dining, attentive dining room staff, and amenities like a 24-hour snack bar and bistro. Multiple reviewers note that special menu requests are accommodated without extra fees. Additional amenities noted across reviews include salon services, a library, mail room, activity spaces, pet-friendly policies, a dog park, and frequent entertainment and guest programming. A few reviewers found pricing to be on the high side, while others felt it represented good value relative to competitors; this suggests perceived value is influenced by individual expectations and needs.

Activities, community life, and engagement: Country Meadows scores highly for social programming and opportunities for engagement. Reviewers cite a broad calendar of activities (bingo, puzzles, exercise classes, live entertainment, trips, religious services led by staff like Pastor Jim, school visits, therapy dog visits, and creative programs). Families note that residents make friends quickly, reengage with hobbies (arts, crafts, music), and participate in outings, contributing to improved quality of life and emotional well-being. The community is described repeatedly as welcoming and nurturing — "family-like," with staff who know residents by name and make personal connections.

Management, communication, and COVID response: Leadership and administration receive praise for being organized, welcoming (signs and flowers at move-in), and communicative. During the COVID crisis, many reviewers appreciated transparency, proactive safety protocols, and efforts to maintain family contact (Zoom, FaceTime, email). However, there are contrasting comments alleging dishonesty or poor communication from management in certain cases — including reports of misinformation or promised services (such as dementia care) not being delivered. These negative accounts are less frequent but signal that communication and accountability have not been uniformly experienced by every resident or family.

Patterns of concern and variability: While the majority of reviews are strongly positive and many families give unreserved recommendations, there are notable negative themes that recur enough to merit attention: serious clinical lapses (medication errors or neglect), poor night-shift supervision, reports of untrained staff in dementia-specific units, occasional administrative behavior perceived as money-driven or threatening (eviction threats), and lack of on-site skilled nursing. Some reviewers also noted inconsistent responsiveness to individualized or unusual requests and minor facility maintenance issues (for example, snow removal). These concerns are unevenly distributed — many families experienced exemplary care and oversight, while others had troubling incidents. That variability suggests quality is generally high but not uniform in every shift or unit.

Bottom line and guidance for prospective families: Country Meadows Hershey is widely praised for its compassionate, engaged staff; clean and attractive campus; robust activities and dining; effective rehabilitation and hospice coordination; and strong sense of community. These strengths make it a highly recommended option by most reviewers for independent living, assisted living, memory care, short-term rehab, and outpatient therapy. Prospective residents and families should, however, perform targeted due diligence given the isolated but serious complaints: ask about night-shift staffing and supervision protocols, medication management procedures, staffing and training in memory/dementia units, and contingency plans for residents who may need certified skilled nursing (since it is not available on-site). Also request recent quality and incident reports, speak to current residents and families if possible, and verify specific promises in writing to reduce the chance of experiencing the types of negative situations reported by a minority of reviewers.
