    Neglect, disrespect, filthy conditions, avoid

I trusted this facility with my loved one and regret it. Staff were uncaring and often disrespectful, I saw neglect/abuse signs, filthy conditions, unanswered phones, safety problems and regulatory action - management showed nepotism and ignored rules with terrible staffing ratios. A couple of caregivers were kind and nostalgic, but overall I left and would not recommend.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is predominantly negative, with multiple recurring themes suggesting systemic problems at the facility. While a minority of reviewers note positive interpersonal experiences—describing some staff as caring and expressing nostalgia or a family-like connection—these positive remarks are overshadowed by frequent and serious complaints. The dominant impression is of a facility struggling with staffing, professionalism, cleanliness, and management practices that compromise resident safety and quality of care.

Care quality and safety: Care quality appears to be a central concern. Reviews include allegations of neglect and abuse and describe staff as uncaring in some cases. Several entries point to safety concerns serious enough to result in regulatory action. The combination of reported abuse/neglect and official intervention indicates potential systemic lapses in resident protection and oversight. Prospective residents and families should treat these claims as red flags and seek current inspection reports and corroborating evidence.

Staffing and staff behavior: Staffing problems are a recurrent theme. Reviewers cite very poor staff-to-resident ratios—one explicit example reported is 1 staff member for 55 residents—which would make delivering attentive, safe care difficult. Comments also include accusations of a horrible work ethic, unprofessionalism toward both staff and residents, and overt disrespect. There is a mixed picture where some staff are praised for positive interactions, but those positive reports are much fewer than the complaints. Communication issues are also present: phones reportedly go unanswered, which compounds concerns about responsiveness and oversight.

Facilities, cleanliness, and health: Multiple reviews describe a dirty or “nasty” environment and raise cleanliness and health concerns. Such descriptions, when combined with reports of regulatory action, suggest that environmental and infection-control standards may not be reliably maintained. These issues have direct implications for resident wellbeing and should be verified through inspections or in-person visits.

Management and organizational culture: Management and ownership practices are frequently criticized. Specific issues include nepotism and allegations that the owner does not follow regulations. These governance concerns can erode accountability and foster a workplace culture that tolerates poor performance and unprofessional conduct. Several comments about a horrible workplace environment and low morale among staff are consistent with the notion that management problems are contributing to operational failures.

Amenities, activities, and atmosphere: There is little detailed feedback about dining, programming, or specific amenities. The main positive notes about atmosphere are emotional: some reviewers report nostalgia and a family-like connection for certain residents, indicating that when staff engagement is good it can create meaningful, positive experiences. However, the scarcity of positive commentary about activities or dining means there is insufficient information to assess these areas reliably.

Patterns and implications: Taken together, the reviews outline a pattern of staffing shortages, poor professionalism, cleanliness problems, and questionable management practices that have led to regulatory scrutiny. Although a minority of reviewers recall positive staff interactions and a warm, familial atmosphere in some instances, the volume and severity of negative reports—particularly allegations of neglect, abuse, and safety problems—are substantial and consistent. For anyone considering this facility, it would be prudent to request the facility’s most recent inspection and enforcement records, ask for current staffing ratios and turnover data, conduct an in-person tour focusing on cleanliness and staff-resident interactions, and speak directly with current families about recent experiences. These steps can help determine whether the negative patterns reflected in these reviews have been addressed or persist.

    About American House

American House Personal Care sits at 25 South 9th Street in downtown Lebanon, PA, right near hospitals, shops, and restaurants, and it's close to bus routes and all those things you need for daily life like grocery stores and pharmacies, and you'll find that it's a big place with room for about 74 residents, even though some listings note it cares for up to 48. Staff's there around the clock, ready to help with things like moving from bed to wheelchair, handing out medication, managing blood sugar for diabetes, helping folks with bathing, grooming, and getting dressed, and they've got nurses on staff for health checks and support, which matters especially for those needing extra personal or memory care, as they have dedicated Alzheimer's care and respite services. The place has its problems-there've been several state inspections by the Department of Human Services, details about violations, revoked and provisional licenses, and some ongoing issues, yet it keeps operating under Hotel Lebanon Corp doing business as American House Personal Care, so families should keep an eye on updates from the state.

Inside, residents have a choice of rooms with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, phones, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and regular housekeeping. There are lots of gathering spots like a community room, library, chapel, and even a woodworking shop. Meals come three times a day, with homemade dishes and options for different diets like allergies or diabetes; there's restaurant-style dining, and snacks or meals whenever, plus staff help with meal prep if needed. Activities fill up the week, with scheduled fitness programs, games, book rooms, music therapy, crafts, movie nights in a small theater, and pet therapy. Folks can also use spa areas, gardens, a hot tub, and outdoor walking paths, so you're not just stuck in your room, and there's a barber, salon, bank, and convenience store on the grounds. They organize transportation to the doctor, errands, or church, and handle laundry, dry cleaning, and move-ins. With indoor and outdoor spaces for socializing, garden visits, and plenty of daily and resident-run events, there's always something going on to keep minds busy and hands active.

For those who want to live more independently or need more care, the place covers a lot, offering assisted living, memory care, independent living, nursing home care, continuing care retirement options, long-term, respite, and home care services-plus help with moves between levels of support as needs change, and they say they can help make care plans personal. There's even cemetery and monument services connected to the site, which is less common, and they work with outside groups for things like VA Benefits, cost assistance, and financial advice, as budgets can be a concern. Emergency alert systems and a 24-hour call service aim to keep everyone safe throughout the day and night. Even with a history of state violations and shifting licenses, American House has remained a busy site for seniors needing various types of care, with all sorts of amenities and activities to make daily life a little easier and a little less lonely.
