    Comforting, clean, compassionate care; recommended

I placed my mom at Columbia Cottage and I have no regrets. The country-style, homey atmosphere, clean roomy accommodations and porch rocking chairs felt comforting; meals in the central dining room were restaurant-quality. Staff were consistently compassionate, professional and attentive-medication help, laundry, housekeeping, on-site therapy and excellent end-of-life care gave our family peace of mind. There are plenty of activities (exercise, bingo, ice cream socials), it's affordable and well-led, though an extra activity/TV room would be nice - I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with numerous families and residents praising Columbia Cottage for compassionate, professional care and a homelike environment. The majority of reviewers highlight staff as the centerpiece of the positive experience — describing them as friendly, warm, knowledgeable and attentive. Multiple comments single out leadership and management (including a named administrator, Andrea) as setting a positive tone, being responsive, and visiting frequently, which families appreciated. There are repeated expressions of gratitude, reports of excellent end-of-life care, and several testimonials that the facility extended life or markedly improved a resident’s quality of life.

Care quality and staffing are consistently emphasized. Reviewers report round-the-clock assistance, dignity and respect for residents, medication support, and personal relationships between staff and residents. Several accounts describe highly professional nursing and caregiving, timely medical attention, and strong emotional and family-oriented support. Families frequently noted that care needs were met or exceeded expectations, and many reviewers explicitly state “no regrets” about placing their loved ones at Columbia Cottage.

Facilities and accommodations receive strong praise as well. The community’s independent cottages or private rooms with individual bathrooms are popular, as are comfortable common areas like porches, courtyards, and country-style décor that contribute to a home-like atmosphere rather than an institutional feel. Rooms and dining areas are repeatedly described as clean, in excellent condition, and smelling fresh (no typical “nursing home” odor). Recent or ongoing refurbishments — new flooring and paint — are noted, and many reviewers describe the facility as ‘‘like-new’’ or top-of-the-line. Practical on-site amenities such as physical and occupational therapy, a hair salon, communal kitchen, bathing facilities in each room, and laundry service are also appreciated.

Dining and programming are further strengths. The dining service gets frequent positive mentions — from ‘‘good food’’ to ‘‘restaurant-quality dining’’ — and meals are served in a communal dining room that many families find conducive to socialization. The activity calendar is described as robust, with frequent offerings such as bingo, exercise classes, painting, ice cream socials, holiday parties, nail care, and other social events. That said, some reviewers did recommend expanding activities or adding a dedicated activity/TV room, indicating that activity programming can vary or could be enhanced in particular locations or at certain times.

Affordability and value appear as recurring themes: several reviewers explicitly state that Columbia Cottage is less expensive than nearby competitors while still delivering high-quality care and amenities. This combination of value, good food, responsive management, and caring staff is a frequent reason families recommend the community.

The main concerns and patterns of variability should be noted. A small number of reviewers reported occasional lost or misdelivered personal items. One recurring caution is around marketing and advertising: reviewers observed identical photos used across different Columbia Cottage locations and advised prospective residents and families to visit each specific site in person to confirm conditions and programs. There are isolated reports of poor rehab experiences and one mention of ‘‘atrocious rehab,’’ suggesting rehab outcomes or provider assignments may be inconsistent. Refurbishment work, while ultimately positive, was mentioned and could imply temporary disruption. Finally, although most staff comments are very positive, a few reviews noted that attention can wane as a resident’s condition declines unless management intervenes — in one case the manager promised to increase attention when decline was noticed.

In summary, the dominant picture from these reviews is of a warm, well-run assisted living community with strong leadership and caring staff, comfortable private accommodations, good food, a full activity calendar, and useful on-site services (therapy, salon, laundry). Families consistently report satisfaction, emotional support, and confidence in care, often with explicit recommendations. Prospective residents should, however, do an in-person visit to the specific Columbia Cottage location they are considering to confirm activity offerings, rehab arrangements, and current conditions (especially if refurbishment is underway), and should clarify processes for personal property management to minimize occasional misdeliveries.

    About Columbia Cottage

Columbia Cottage is a senior living community run by Horst Group that sits in a few locations, including Hershey, Collegeville, Hanover, Linglestown, and Wyomissing. The place has 52 units and serves about 40 to 50 residents, which keeps things small and friendly. There's a family-type feeling because the staff works hard to know folks by name and remember what each person likes. The community is built with a single-story open plan, wide hallways, and soundproofing between apartments, and the rooms are spacious with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, air conditioning you set yourself, cable TV, Wi-Fi, and even telephone service if you want.

Columbia Cottage has a license as an Assisted Living Facility in Pennsylvania with the number #330240 and holds up to 60 residents. The care plans here are tailored for each person, and they've got ten levels of care, so people can age in place without having to move as their needs change. There are universal caregivers, so residents see the same familiar faces throughout the day. There's licensed nursing staff and 24-hour supervision. Nurses are around all day in case someone needs help with medicine, bathing, dressing, or moving about, and there's support for those who aren't able to walk on their own.

They offer independent living for active folks, assisted living for those needing a bit of help, and memory care for people with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, with customized therapies and safe spaces. Columbia Cottage also supports people from the Plain Community. There's short-term and respite care, too.

Meals come from a professional chef and hit regular favorites, like chicken pot pie, crab cakes, homemade pies, and classics like macaroni and cheese, but there's careful attention to things like allergies, diabetes diets, and nutrition. Some folks like to eat in the dining room, while others take part in all-day dining options. There are activities and social events every day-bingo, trivia, movie nights, music programs, ice cream socials, spa treatments, arts and crafts, exercise groups, resident-led clubs, gardening, and even outdoor get-togethers when the weather's nice.

A wellness program and fitness room are on-site, with plenty of walking paths outdoors and cozy courtyards to relax in, and there's a movie theater, a library, and rooms for games and crafts. There's always scheduled transportation ready for errands, shopping trips, doctor appointments, or local community activities, and they even host things like Halloween parades and shopping nights. Housekeeping, laundry (provided or self-serve), dry cleaning, and concierge services are part of the regular routine, and parking is available for residents and family visitors.

Safety matters, so the community has security systems, an emergency alert system in every apartment, and staff are trained to respond quickly to urgent calls. Prices start at $4,295 monthly, and they take options like private pay, veteran's benefits, and long-term care insurance.

The community tries to fit each resident's changing needs, encourages residents to keep their hobbies and social ties, and aims to create a good blend of privacy, independence, and support. Staff are friendly, steady, and stay involved in helping people feel settled and known. Columbia Cottage gets regular license reviews and is known for providing care across several needs, whether for active adults, seniors needing routine help, or those with memory loss who need a secure place. The whole design and the close-knit care make it feel homelike and easy for seniors and their families to manage changes as they come.
