    Warm, clean, affordable; admissions inconsistent

I toured this small, homey senior community and overall liked the warm, knowledgeable staff, very clean rooms and common areas, and friendly, social atmosphere. The place is affordable, conveniently located, with nice outdoor spaces (deck/patio), a library and basic activities - not fancy or modern, and some rooms/bathrooms are small or shared. Meals are home-style but can be repetitive; medical oversight is available and staff seemed capable. My only real concern was inconsistent admissions communication and at least one instance of misrepresented bed availability, so it felt like a great fit for many but not perfect for everyone.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Penn Assisted Care is mixed but leans positive with strong praise focused on staff quality, cleanliness, and the facility’s home-like atmosphere. The most consistent and prominent theme is the staff: reviewers repeatedly describe staff as friendly, caring, patient, personable, and professional. Multiple comments highlight knowledgeable and well-trained caregivers, including the ability to manage specific conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. Several reviews specifically commend the administrator and management as committed and helpful, and some families reported a smooth, reassuring admissions experience. Cleanliness and an odor-free environment are commonly cited, reinforcing the impression of attentive daily care.

The facility’s character is frequently described as a small, quaint, home-like environment rather than a large, institutional setting. Reviewers note multiple communal living spaces — day rooms, a library, patios and a nice deck — which contribute to a family feel and frequent social interaction among residents. Many reviewers appreciate the affordability and reasonable pricing, and there are positive notes about home-cooked style meals and the ability to accommodate dietary needs. Medical oversight and a regular care schedule are mentioned positively in several summaries, which may reassure families looking for steady clinical attention without a hospital-like atmosphere.

However, there are recurring concerns about the physical plant and amenities. The building is described as basic and somewhat outdated, lacking features that some families expect such as a pool or gym. Rooms are often smaller or described as cramped; double occupancy is common and several reviewers note small or shared bathrooms. These constraints contribute to the sense that the facility prioritizes practical, affordable care over modern finishes or spacious private rooms. Activity offerings are inconsistent in the reviews: while some reviewers say there are decent activities and outdoor games, others report a lack of scheduled activities or find offerings insufficient.

Dining impressions are mixed. Many reviews praise home-style meals and note staff are willing to make dietary accommodations, but a number of reviewers also complain that the food can be repetitive or basic. Administrative and admissions issues emerge as a significant pattern in the negative feedback: a subset of reviews describe misrepresented bed availability, poor coordination during admissions, unreturned calls, and unprofessional communications. These problems contrast with other reports praising the management team, indicating variability in administrative responsiveness depending on the situation or staff on duty.

There are a few notable safety or compatibility concerns raised by reviewers. Some mention the presence of psychiatric patients and suggest this affected the atmosphere or fit for certain residents. A small number of reviewers described an uncomfortable vibe (including a "frat house" characterization), or concluded the community was not the right fit for their loved one — reinforcing that the social environment and resident mix may not align with every family’s expectations.

In summary, Penn Assisted Care appears to be a well-staffed, clean, and affordable assisted living option with a homelike, small-community feel and strengths in personalized caregiving and medical oversight. Families seeking compassionate staff, basic but effective care, and a social, home-style environment are likely to find it attractive. Conversely, those prioritizing modern facilities, private or spacious rooms, robust amenity offerings (pool/gym), consistently varied activities, or flawless administrative communication may find limitations here. Prospective families should weigh the strong staff and cleanliness track record against the facility’s physical limitations and occasional administrative inconsistencies, and schedule an in-person visit and direct conversations about room options, activity programming, dining variety, and admission logistics to determine fit.
