    Friendly staff, unauthorized placement, disappointing

The staff were friendly, treated us like family, pricing was affordable, and activities (music, games, guest visits) were nice - I initially would recommend. However, they placed my family member without our permission; after a fall that broke their shoulder they moved them to another facility without calling us, and staff became rude and unprofessional. Overall a mixed, disappointing experience.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed, with multiple reviewers praising staff friendliness, affordability, and programming, while at least one reviewer reports serious safety, consent, and communication concerns. Several reviews emphasize that staff can be very helpful and treat residents like family, and that the facility offers activities and reasonable pricing. However, a separate set of observations describes unprofessional conduct, a significant fall resulting in injury, and administrative actions taken without adequate family involvement.

Staff is the most frequently mentioned aspect and shows a clear division in experience. Positive comments consistently describe staff as nice, helpful, attentive, and family-like; these reviewers felt comfortable recommending the community. Those positives suggest that day-to-day interactions and caregiving can be warm and supportive. Contrastingly, other comments describe rude, unprofessional, or even "disgusting" behavior from staff members. This indicates inconsistency in personnel performance or variability between shifts or teams; potential residents and families should expect that quality of interpersonal care may depend on which staff are on duty.

Care quality and resident safety are mixed in the reviews. Some reviewers state the facility provides normal/basic care, implying routine needs are met. However, the reports also include a serious safety-related incident: an elder fell and suffered a broken shoulder. That same account alleges the resident was placed into the facility without proper permission and later moved to another facility without family notification. These claims raise red flags about safety protocols, fall prevention, informed consent during admission, and post-incident communication. While the positive reviews suggest acceptable everyday care, the safety and administrative allegations are significant and should be investigated or clarified by prospective families.

Facilities and programming are mentioned with both praise and critique. Activities such as music, games, and guest visits are highlighted as beneficial and contribute to community life — a definite positive for resident engagement. Pricing is described as affordable by multiple reviewers, which could be an important advantage for cost-sensitive families. On the downside, apartments are characterized as "not great," indicating that living units may be outdated, small, or otherwise below some reviewers' expectations. There is no information in these summaries about dining, medical staffing levels, or clinical services, so those areas remain unknown from the provided reviews.

Management and communication emerge as notable concerns. Specific allegations of being "placed there without permission" and being "moved to another facility without calling family" point to potential problems with admission procedures, consent processes, and family notification policies. Coupled with reports of rude or unprofessional staff, these management-related issues suggest weaknesses in oversight, training, or accountability. Prospective residents and families should ask direct questions about admission consent, incident reporting, fall-prevention measures, emergency communication protocols, and staffing consistency when evaluating the community.

In summary, Harbison Hall appears to offer an affordable community with engaging activities and a number of staff who are warm and family-oriented, which leads some reviewers to recommend the facility. However, there are serious and specific negative reports — notably a fall with injury, alleged admission and relocation without family consent, and instances of rude or unprofessional behavior — that indicate risk areas around safety, communication, and management consistency. Families considering Harbison Hall should weigh the positive interpersonal and activity-oriented aspects against these safety and administrative concerns, verify policies and protocols in person, and seek references or documentation about incident handling and staff training before making a placement decision.

    About Harbison Hall

Harbison Hall in Columbia, South Carolina, offers a range of care for older adults and people with disabilities, and some folks come in doing pretty well on their own and want some help now and then, maybe just with housekeeping or rides and meals, and then others need quite a bit more help, and the place seems to have options for both, with independent living apartments and assisted living suites, and each room has kitchenettes, safety rails, cable TV, and washers and dryers, and some rooms come furnished while others don't, and people can pick a private or shared room for a monthly rate between $6,500 and $9,500, and that covers a lot of services like meals, personal care like dressing and bathing and medication help, and the community also has a memory care area for people with Alzheimer's or dementia that's kept secure with alarmed entrances and 24-hour staff helping with things like wound care, medication, and keeping folks involved with memory-enhancing activities. The place has 40 beds and about 16 staff, and there's always a nurse around to check on folks or help after a hospital stay, and they offer medical services like podiatry and rehabilitation, plus long-term and skilled nursing for those who need lots of ongoing support. Folks can come just for adult day services, or stay longer, and there's home care too, from basic help to Medicare-certified home health, and they say families can use long-term care insurance if they have it. Amenities try to give folks a good quality of life, with things like restaurant-style dining, a fitness center, game room, art and education programs, and outdoor walking paths that work for wheelchairs too. There's a beauty salon, laundry, housekeeping, and scheduled transportation for errands or doctor appointments, and staff provide steady, personalized attention for residents with memory problems or high medical needs. Meals, social activities, and Wi-Fi come included, and the director, Louetta A. Slice, oversees daily operations, with the building open from 7 AM to 7 PM every day, and you can learn more at harbisonhallassistedliving.com.
