    Excellent care, cramped rooms, recommend

I've generally been pleased - staff are attentive, respectful and provide excellent therapy and respite care, and management steps in when needed. The building is older with very small, outdated rooms, occasional odors/cleanliness issues and signs of short-staffing with a few uncaring employees that slow responses. Social activities and the convenient location are a plus; I'd recommend it for the quality of care despite the cramped rooms.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed, with a clear pattern: many reviewers praise the caregiving and therapy teams while others raise consistent concerns about staffing levels, facility condition, cleanliness, and family communication. Multiple reviewers singled out individual staff members and the therapy team as compassionate, knowledgeable, and effective — citing attentive hands-on care, respectful treatment, good clinical outcomes, and examples of management successfully intervening when problems arose. A number of commenters described their experience as excellent and said their loved ones’ needs were met, with some specifically recommending the facility and expressing gratitude for the care received.

At the same time, there are repeated complaints about the physical plant and operational issues. Several reviews describe Oakhaven as an older, outdated facility with small or shared rooms and cramped bathrooms that leave little room for family to sit. Multiple people reported unpleasant smells and concerns about cleanliness, indicating that housekeeping standards may be inconsistent. These physical and environmental issues appear frequently enough to be a notable theme across reviews.

Staffing and interpersonal concerns form another major theme. While many staff members are praised, reviewers also report episodes of rude or uncaring behavior from some employees, and some characterize management as unprofessional. Short-staffing is mentioned or implied as a cause of problems: slow responses to bathroom call lights, residents being left in bed or not participating in activities, and families feeling the residents are not watched over closely enough. Communication with families is uneven — some relatives say staff do not return calls or do not interact well with family members, which contributes to dissatisfaction even when direct care is adequate.

Activities and therapy receive generally positive mentions. Reviewers note weekly Bingo, occasional shopping trips, and other social opportunities. Therapy staff are specifically called out as compassionate and competent, contributing to strong outcomes and a sense of safety for some residents. Respite care is available and appreciated by at least one reviewer. These programmatic strengths contrast with the routine care and environmental weaknesses, suggesting activity and rehabilitation offerings are a relative strong point.

Taken together, the reviews describe a facility with a capable and occasionally excellent clinical staff and therapy program, but with notable variability in staff courtesy, management consistency, and facility upkeep. Families considering Oakhaven should weigh the positive reports of hands-on care and therapy results against recurring complaints about room size, cleanliness, odors, staffing levels, and communication. Prospective residents and families may benefit from visiting in person to inspect rooms, observe cleanliness and smells, ask about staffing levels and response times, and meet key caregiving and management staff to assess fit and consistency.

    About Oakhaven Nursing Center

Oakhaven Nursing Center sits at 123 Oak Street in Darlington, South Carolina, and has 88 beds for both long-term and short-term stays, serving seniors who need skilled nursing or intermediate care, so folks who are very frail or need help throughout the day can count on caregivers always being there since they've got 24-hour care services. You'll see studio apartments that start at $4,125 a month, and meals are provided through the therapeutic dining program, which means the kitchen can make meals for special diets as needed, and there's a focus on dining together, which feels pretty important for people in any kind of group home setting like this. Oakhaven has earned a 4.0 rating based on 7 reviews, with about two-thirds of the reviews giving 5 stars, which suggests many families and residents are pretty happy with the care and atmosphere.

They offer both assisted living and nursing home services, so if someone needs short-term rehab after a hospital stay, or longer-term support, the staff are trained for things like diabetic care, incontinence care, and helping people who can't easily get around by themselves. Residents who need therapy-like physical, occupational, or speech therapies-can get these right at the facility, and they try to keep people active with music, art and crafts, and exercise classes, both in the indoor common areas and outdoors where you'll find a courtyard, landscaped garden, picnic tables, and benches for sitting outside. People who want to be involved can join activities either on-site or when there's something planned off the property. Families mention the place is known for being clean, having good nursing care, and paying attention to special needs and requests, so that's something to keep in mind if you're looking for a place with a reputation for treating people with respect and care. Stacy Boatwright manages the staff, and there's a full senior care program in place to help each resident feel as at home as possible, whether they plan on staying for a while or just need some extra help recovering before heading home.
