    Unsafe neglectful care, avoid facility

I wanted to like this warm, home-like place-staff and cooks were caring, dinners felt real, and communication was frequent-but my experience was awful. Management and owners were unresponsive to serious problems: bedbugs and cleanliness issues, the owner smoking and dumping ashes indoors, and a generally unsafe, poorly maintained house. My mom suffered medical neglect (diabetes and COPD not properly treated, dangerously low oxygen), nurses were often absent, meds were given incorrectly, staff threatened residents, accounts were debited without explanation, and APS became involved. Given the safety, health, and management failures, I strongly advise staying away.

    Summary review

The reviews for West End Retirement Center Inc are highly polarized, with several reviewers praising the home-like atmosphere, compassionate staff, and homestyle meals, while other reviewers report serious safety, medical, and cleanliness concerns. Positive accounts emphasize a warm, welcoming environment in a residential setting, attentive caregiving from particular staff members, regular family communication, and community-oriented touches such as pizza parties and ministry-like compassion. These reviewers describe genuine administration, caring cooks who provide real dinners, and an environment that feels like a private home rather than an institutional facility.

In stark contrast, a number of reviews describe severe problems that raise safety and regulatory concerns. Multiple reviewers allege medical neglect — specifically untreated diabetes and COPD, dangerously low oxygen levels, and medication errors — and one or more reviews claim nurses were not present when needed. There are also allegations that staff have threatened patients and that residents' accounts have been debited without satisfactory explanation. These reports go beyond minor complaints and include claims of Adult Protective Services involvement, which indicates that at least some issues were considered serious enough to trigger external investigation.

Facility condition and cleanliness appear as another major dividing line. Positive reviews call the facility “gorgeous” and homelike, while negative reviews report bedbug infestation, unclean or uneven floors, and an owner who allegedly smokes indoors and dumps ashes on the floor. Several reviewers explicitly cite pest and health risks as well as poor responsiveness from management or owners when problems are reported. The physical setting—an older house converted into a retirement home—is noted by some as part of its charm and by others as a source of structural and maintenance concerns.

Management and responsiveness show a split pattern: some families praise caring management and frequent, appropriate communication; others criticize owners and managers for inaction, poor follow-through on complaints, and alleged financial improprieties. Questions about licensing and regulatory compliance appear in the reviews, and the mention of Adult Protective Services involvement strengthens the need for verification and caution. Dining and activities receive mostly positive comments: homestyle meals, caring cooks, and community events are highlighted by satisfied families.

Overall, the review set presents two distinct experiences. Positive accounts emphasize compassion, home-like culture, good food, and attentive staff; negative accounts describe serious lapses in medical care, safety, cleanliness, pest control, and management responsiveness. Given this mix, prospective residents and families should proceed with caution: visit the facility multiple times at different hours, review recent inspection and licensing records, ask specifically about staffing levels and on-site nursing coverage, verify how medications and billing are handled, inquire about pest-control and cleaning protocols, and speak with current families about their experiences. The conflicting reports mean that individual experiences may vary widely depending on timing, staff on duty, and how management addressed past complaints, so thorough due diligence is strongly recommended before making any placement decision.

About West End Retirement Center Inc

West End Retirement Center Inc sits in Easley, South Carolina, right over on South 5th Street, and it's been family owned and operated for about 60 years, so it's got some old roots in the community and folks seem to know it from way back, and it isn't far from downtown Easley with some shopping and eating places if anyone wants to go out, but it's also tucked in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where people catch nice sunset views sometimes. There are 38 licensed beds here, and the place is a Community Residential Care Facility, which means folks can get help with daily living, and they take elder care pretty seriously-offering both assisted living and memory care for people who need help with Alzheimer's or dementia, and for those who don't need as much help, they've got independent living, too. Residents can expect some simple comforts like housekeeping, laundry services, and an on-site meal program where one or two meals a day get made, plus there's some medical support if needed in assisted living, and there are common areas set up so people can sit together and talk or join in on planned activities, which usually relate to what people are interested in already, because they try to listen to what folks like to do. While it doesn't list a lot of fancy services or features, West End tries to create a place where people feel cared for and heard, and families get peace of mind, knowing their loved ones have a safe place that gets regular surveys from groups like the Department of Aging. While the facility doesn't accept Medicare unless certified, and specific names for programs or staff aren't listed, the main focus lands on keeping a community where seniors can stay active, get some help when they need it, and enjoy simple moments, all while being close to the center of Easley and nestled near those mountain foothills.
