    Compassionate staff but unsafe care

I experienced a mix of excellent and terrible care. A few nurses and therapists like Gloria and Olivia were compassionate, knowledgeable, and made a real difference in recovery, but overall the facility felt unsafe and poorly managed: outdated beds, poor cleanliness, cold/inedible food that sometimes disappeared, and even reports of crusted scabies. Staff were often inattentive and unresponsive (long waits at the nurses' station, infrequent checks), COVID rules ignored, and delayed/neglectful wound and catheter care led to readmission and unsafe incidents; my loved one was left soiled and unshowered. With high charges, questionable insurance practices, and a need to advocate daily, I cannot recommend this place.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly mixed, with clear and repeated praise for clinical and therapy staff juxtaposed against serious concerns about basic care, cleanliness, management, food service, and safety. Several reviewers emphasize that the facility is attractive and has a warm, character-filled environment; others call it a leader in the state for therapy and clinical outcomes. Positive comments focus heavily on the therapy team, certain nurses and CNAs (Gloria and Olivia are named), and families describing significant, measurable recovery and supportive staff who helped them navigate difficult transitions.

However, an equally prominent theme is inconsistent frontline care and operational problems. Multiple reviewers report neglectful behavior by CNAs (patients left soiled, not showered, or suffering from catheter neglect), slow or unresponsive staffing (long waits at the nursing station, delayed wound care, infrequent checks), and particularly poor performance during night shifts. These issues are not isolated—they appear in several summaries and are tied to severe consequences in some accounts (falls, readmission to hospital, and at least one report of serious infection leading to death with mentions of crusted scabies). Such reports raise substantial concerns about day-to-day supervision, infection control, and resident safety.

Dining and basic services emerge as a consistent area of dissatisfaction. Multiple reviewers described the food as disgusting, served cold, or inedible; separate reports allege food disappearing or being stolen by staff. These complaints, combined with descriptions of outdated beds and facilities that need updating, indicate that while the facility may have aesthetic charm, many basic resident services and amenities are falling short of expectations. The contrast between an attractive building and poor execution of daily care appears to frustrate families who expect both quality environment and reliable caregiving.

Management and administrative issues are another recurring theme. Several reviews accuse management of poor oversight, questionable insurance practices, and charging high fees that reviewers felt did not match the level of service provided. Some families felt compelled to advocate daily to get appropriate care for their loved ones—an indicator that systems for monitoring resident well-being and handling family concerns may be inadequate. Positive care experiences frequently note individual staff members or teams rather than consistent facility-wide performance, suggesting uneven quality that depends on who is on duty.

In summary, Morrell Nursing Center appears to deliver high-quality therapy and compassionate care from particular nurses and rehab staff, with documented positive outcomes for some residents. At the same time, multiple serious concerns are repeatedly reported: neglect by some CNAs, slow and inconsistent nursing response, infection-control lapses, food-service failures, alleged staff misconduct, and management shortcomings. These patterns point to a facility with strong pockets of clinical competence but troubling operational and oversight weaknesses. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s reputed strengths in therapy and certain caregiving staff against documented risks around basic care, safety, cleanliness, and administrative practices. If considering placement, frequent oversight, clear care expectations, and ongoing advocacy appear necessary based on the review patterns.

    About Morrell Nursing Center

Morrell Nursing Center sits at 900 N. Marquis Hwy in Hartsville, South Carolina and offers care for seniors through skilled nursing, long-term care, and assisted living services, and when you look at it, what stands out is how a team of experienced healthcare professionals owns and leads the place, so you know the leadership has been through many years of helping people get better. The facility's got 154 beds for both short-term stays and long-term residents, and they say they care about each individual's needs, making sure to pay attention to who needs what kind of help, which matters when you've got folks who need things like therapy or memory support. There's a dedicated memory care unit for those with dementia or related troubles, and they run specialized programs for them, while skilled therapists work with people needing speech, physical, or occupational therapy, and the Rehab Center at Morrell has really grown over time with a new, bigger gym so residents can keep working toward their goals. Morrell's staff includes a Rehab Unit Manager and a Rehab Case Manager, with therapists who work together on treatment plans focused on what each individual needs, and the team welcomes family involvement in care and in preparing for leaving the facility, which helps everybody stay connected and informed. People can enjoy restaurant-style dining in a spacious, comfortable room, use the courtyard café and lounge with Wi-Fi, spend time in common areas made to feel like home, and the residents' suites, including four new ones with their own baths, offer privacy and a little peace when that's what's called for. Outside, there are landscaped courtyards, while inside, folks have access to cable TV, laundry, daily activities, and beautician services at the on-site beauty parlor, which really can make the day brighter. Morrell Nursing Center takes care of the whole person, addressing physical needs with rehab and medical care but also helping with mental health through licensed counselors and support services, and having licensed social workers and dietary professionals means they pay attention to every part of a person's life, not just one part. Their program is structured to help people adjust and recover-especially as they work with hospitals to make sure the move from hospital to rehab is smooth-and they try to keep the atmosphere warm, welcoming, and as much like a real home as possible, helped by recent renovations like the new canopy entrance and updated rooms. Morrell Nursing Center is recognized for its commitment to quality, holds accreditation, and provides a caring, nurturing environment where people can grow, heal, and feel supported, and you can find more about them at their website.
