    Warm staff, spotless facility, pricey

I visited and was impressed - the staff are warm, attentive and went out of their way, the building is beautiful, spotless and well-kept, and the activity program (music, bingo, trips, bible study) and memory care are excellent. It's an upscale private-pay community, so expect higher prices, extra personal-care fees and frequent lack of immediate availability. A few people noted scheduling, billing or management hiccups and occasional caregiver issues, so verify staffing and services, but overall my experience was very positive and I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Ashlan Village are predominantly positive, with recurring praise for staff, cleanliness, social programming, and the physical environment. Many reviewers and family members describe the staff as kind, attentive, and loving — adjectives such as "wonderful," "helpful," "patient," and "supportive" appear frequently. Several reviews emphasize that staff go out of their way to provide care, including punctual caregivers, quick caregiver replacements, and hands-on support in difficult decisions. Many residents report being happy and comfortable; multiple family members strongly recommend the community.

Care quality and staff: Across reviews the staff and caregivers are the most consistently lauded aspect. Memory care in particular is singled out positively — reviewers call the memory care unit "wonderful," and describe exceptional, family-like care there. Several reviewers compliment administrators and executive directors for being experienced and pleasant; tour experiences are often described as thorough and reassuring, with staff showing every aspect of the community. That said, there are contrasting reports: a minority of reviewers reported poor management behavior (rudeness or "toxic" management), district managers not returning calls, or occasional caregiver mismatches. Scheduling and billing issues were raised by a few reviewers, indicating that while direct caregiver interactions are often strong, administrative follow-through is inconsistent for some families.

Facilities and amenities: The physical plant draws consistent compliments. Multiple reviewers describe Ashlan Village as elegant, well-designed, and beautifully decorated, noting attractive landscaping, a pond or lake, and a lake-view dining room. Practical amenities mentioned include spacious rooms, two-bedroom/two-bath suites, walk-in closets, a huge hair salon, comfortable sitting rooms for private visits, and a convenient one-level layout that residents appreciate for accessibility. The community is noted as being clean and well-maintained. A few reviewers describe the building as newer or undergoing new construction, contributing to a modern, upscale feel.

Activities and social life: Activity programming is a clear strength. Reviewers frequently list regular offerings such as bingo, movies, bible studies, karaoke, exercise classes, card games, puzzles, and weekly musical groups (hour-long performances residents look forward to). There are also frequent day trips, Mystery Rides, dining outings, and occasional overnight trips, which many residents enjoy and which foster an active lifestyle. The social environment is repeatedly highlighted — residents enjoy interaction, friendships, and a church/community feel (several reviewers remark on religious programming and a small Christian community vibe). Some residents specifically mention having neighbors they know (e.g., being across the hall from a classmate) which reinforces the sense of community.

Dining and daily living: Dining receives mixed but generally favorable comments. Many reviewers praise the dining area, the lake-view dining room, and enjoy food quality and service; several note that food is "very good" and that staff communicate well about dining. However, some reviewers feel the dining is basic or mention only one meal per day in certain contexts, and a small number say food quality could be improved. Additionally, personal care services can incur extra charges, and some families note that the community is a private-pay model, so cost structure (monthly fees plus add-ons) should be clarified during touring.

Management, communication, and safety concerns: While many reviewers find admissions staff and leadership helpful and accommodating, there is a notable minority of serious concerns about management and communication. Specific complaints include poor follow-up, no return calls, misrepresentation of services or promises on the website, a district manager not returning calls, and scheduling/billing problems. A few reviews are strongly negative — describing rude or "corrupt" management and raising safety/privacy issues (one reviewer alleged a camera in a resident room and recommended removing their loved one). These accounts are less frequent than the positive reports but are severe enough to warrant careful probing during a tour or move-in process.

Cost and availability: Cost and space availability are recurring practical considerations. Some reviewers say the monthly fee is "right" or "affordable" compared with local competitors, while others call the community "expensive" and note that personal care costs add on. Several reviewers encountered no immediate openings, and one family noted pricing similar to competitors; thus prospective residents should expect potential waitlists and ask detailed questions about what is included in monthly fees versus extra charges.

Patterns and takeaway guidance: The dominant pattern is overwhelmingly positive impressions centered on compassionate staff, robust activity programming, an attractive and clean facility, and strong memory care services. However, consistent with many assisted living communities, there are pockets of dissatisfaction focused on administrative responsiveness, billing/scheduling, and a few isolated but serious allegations about management behavior and safety/privacy. Prospective residents and families would benefit from (1) touring multiple times to meet both direct care staff and administrators, (2) asking explicitly about what services are included in monthly fees and what costs are extra, (3) requesting references or speaking with current residents and families about both care and management responsiveness, and (4) checking current availability and waitlist procedures.

Conclusion: Ashlan Village comes across as an attractive, activity-rich community with many satisfied residents and family members who appreciate the kindness of staff and the breadth of social programming. Facilities and amenities are consistently praised. The most important caveats are cost/availability and a small but meaningful set of reports about administrative issues and a few safety/privacy allegations; these should be investigated directly with the community before making a placement decision. Overall, the reviews suggest a strong likelihood of a positive resident experience, particularly for those seeking active social programming and reputable memory care, provided families do their due diligence on management practices and contract details.
