    Highly recommended traditional nursing home

I'm grateful we chose this facility - the staff are genuinely the sweetest and lifesaving at times, know residents well, the views and building are beautiful, food is excellent, and there's superb entertainment, concerts, card games and social opportunities; they even track hydration with large water cups. It's an older, more traditional nursing-home style place, more expensive with strict financial prerequisites (including end-of-life funds required) and could use a better staff-to-resident ratio for more personalized care. I strongly recommend it if you can afford it and accept the traditional setting.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is strongly positive, with recurring emphasis on excellent caregiving, robust social life, and a pleasant atmosphere. Multiple reviewers highlight a high staff-to-resident ratio and very personalized, attentive care; families emphasize that staff know residents well and in at least one instance provided life-saving care. Specific operational details such as hydration tracking with large water cups were noted, suggesting practical attention to daily needs. These concrete examples reinforce a pattern of proactive, resident-focused care.

Staff quality and caregiving are the most consistently praised aspects. Descriptions such as "sweetest staff," "super staff," and grateful family testimonials point to compassionate, competent caregivers and strong relationships between staff and residents. The staff familiarity with residents and responsiveness (including reported life-saving interventions) create a sense of trust and safety that reviewers explicitly recommend.

Facility and ambience responses are somewhat mixed but lean positive. Several reviewers call the community beautiful and note attractive views, comfortable spaces, and a quiet, professional atmosphere. At the same time, multiple comments describe an "older facility" and a "traditional nursing home feel," indicating that while the property can be pleasing, it may not have the most modern or upscale design and could feel institutional to some. These contrasting impressions suggest the physical plant is well-maintained and pleasant in parts, but not uniformly modernized.

Dining and activities receive strong praise. Reviewers report excellent food and "superb entertainment," including concerts, card games, and active socialization opportunities. These recurring themes indicate a robust activity program that supports resident engagement and social life, helping maintain independence and community connection. The presence of nearby medical care also supports residents' autonomy, allowing some to feel comfortable retaining independence while having accessible healthcare nearby.

Cost, eligibility, and administrative requirements are consistent concerns. Several reviews mention that the community is more expensive and has financial prerequisites, including required funds for end-of-life care. Age restrictions or strict eligibility criteria were also noted as important considerations. These factors may limit access for some families and create a barrier despite the strong clinical and social offerings.

In summary, Laurel Crest Retirement Community is presented as a caring, socially active community with attentive staff and strong positive outcomes reported by families. Its strengths are in personalized care, operational attentiveness (e.g., hydration tracking), high-quality dining, and engaging entertainment and social programming. Potential residents and families should weigh these strengths against the higher cost, financial prerequisites, and the community's traditional/older facility aspects when deciding whether it matches their expectations for ambiance and affordability. For those prioritizing attentive staff, safety, and social engagement, reviewers give clear, repeated recommendations; for those seeking a newer or less institutional environment or lower cost, the facility may be less ideal.

    About Laurel Crest Retirement Community

Laurel Crest Retirement Community sits along the banks of the Saluda River and is owned and operated by the First Presbyterian Church as a not-for-profit, faith-based Life Plan Community that welcomes seniors of all faiths, and you'll find that the buildings have a traditional nursing home feel, but with comfortable common areas and well-kept gardens that many residents enjoy walking through or just sitting in to watch the river go by, and the place offers a full range of living options-there are cottages and apartments for people looking for independent living, then there's assisted living and skilled nursing care, plus a special unit for Alzheimer's disease and dementia-related needs, and if someone doesn't need to move in fully, there are home care services and rehabilitation available too, and if you have a guest come visit, there are guest rooms for overnight stays, which a lot of families find handy. Staff provide 24-hour nursing care and there's always housekeeping, maintenance, and meal preparation done for you, while transportation services can help get folks to appointments or outings, and one thing the staff do here is keep track of how much water each resident drinks, which helps them make sure everyone's healthy, especially older folks who might forget to drink enough. The community feels close-knit, with plenty of camaraderie, and residents can join in on all kinds of activities, from board games, card games, and movie nights to theater trips and special events, and there's both community-sponsored programming and resident-run clubs, so staying busy is easy-you'll find an arts room for painting or crafts, walking paths, and even a garden, plus barber and beauty salon services so residents don't have to go off campus for a haircut, and the dining rooms serve tastefully prepared meals every day. Safety is a focus too, with fire alarm and security systems throughout, and emergency alert buttons are available, and the building and grounds are kept up with on-site maintenance and repair. For medical needs, Laurel Crest offers specialized healthcare services like diabetic care, non-ambulatory care for folks who can't walk, and incontinence support, along with help for daily needs such as bathing, dressing, and managing medications; there's also memory care that's set up to keep residents safe and lessen confusion, often with alarms and staff close by to help prevent wandering for those with dementia or Alzheimer's. Housekeeping, laundry, and move-in coordination help take the hassle out of living here, and there's even home care with trained aides who provide companionship and non-medical help to residents who want to stay in their own space. Laurel Crest follows a code of conduct about resident rights, honest billing, legal compliance, and quality healthcare, and the nonprofit mission focuses on enriching the quality of life for seniors, supporting not only their physical needs but social, emotional, and spiritual ones too, with programs that encourage wellness in eight different areas of life. Amenities include furnished rooms, community spaces, parking, and personalized care, and there's a photo gallery on hand if you want to see more about daily life here, though folks say what stands out most is the sense of community and the continuum of care through every stage of aging, so someone can come in active and independent and get more help as they need it over the years.
