    Caring staff, peaceful mountain facility

I live here and the staff truly stand out - kind, well-educated and caring, with excellent nursing and patient attention. The mountain/country location is beautiful, the facility is large and peaceful with activity, art and dining spaces and a deck overlooking the woods, and it's a safe/locked-down community. Downsides: it's an older building that needs updates and repairs, furniture and food (often no meat) can be poor, cleanliness is mixed and meds sometimes run late; visits can be a long drive, it's often full/waitlisted, and costs about $9,000/month (government aid available).

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is positive about the quality of care and the staff at Laurelbrook Nursing Home, while pointing to several facility and operational concerns. The most consistent praise centers on the staff: reviewers repeatedly describe nurses and aides as kind, caring, courteous, well-educated, and genuinely invested in residents' well-being. Multiple summaries call it an "excellent nursing home" with staff who "truly care for patients," and administrators are described as friendly. This strong emphasis on compassionate, attentive staff is the primary strength emerging from the reviews and appears to be a key reason people recommend the facility.

The physical setting and amenities also receive favorable mentions. Several reviewers highlight that Laurelbrook is a large, well-laid-out facility with plenty of space, including activity rooms, art and crafts rooms, and a central dining area. The property’s location — described as country or mountain-side, quiet, and with a deck that overlooks woods — is repeatedly cited as a positive feature that contributes to the community feel and pleasant environment. Safety features such as a locked-down campus are noted, which may reassure families focused on security.

At the same time, there are clear and recurring concerns about the building condition and some operational issues. Multiple reviews describe the facility as old or not updated, with repairs needed and some grungy furniture. Cleanliness reports are mixed: some reviewers call the building very clean, while others say it is "not super clean," indicating inconsistency in housekeeping or differences in expectations. These mixed signals suggest cleanliness and maintenance are uneven across time or areas of the facility.

Dining and medication practices are other areas of concern. Several reviews specifically criticize the food — one calls it "awful" and notes that no meat is served — which could be important for nutrition and resident satisfaction. There are also allegations of medication being given late. These operational shortcomings, if accurate and systemic, would be significant because they directly affect resident health and comfort.

Accessibility and availability issues appear as practical limitations. The facility is reported to have a waiting list and to be often full, which can make placement difficult. Cost is mentioned: one review lists a price of about $9,000 (presumably per month), though government aid availability is also noted, indicating some financial assistance options. A few reviewers note long travel times for visitors, which may affect family involvement and frequency of visits.

Activities and engagement are generally supported by the presence of activity rooms and crafts, but reviewers report that not all residents participate. This could reflect resident choice or challenges in engagement/transportation within the building. Finally, the positive note that some reviewers "enjoyed training" or saw staff training reflected in care suggests ongoing staff development, which aligns with the strong praise for personnel.

In summary, Laurelbrook Nursing Home appears to deliver strong, compassionate clinical care and a pleasant natural setting, with an attentive and professional staff and multiple activity-focused amenities. However, potential residents and families should weigh these strengths against concerns about the aging facility, inconsistent cleanliness, furniture and repair issues, food quality, medication timing, occupancy/waiting-list constraints, cost, and possible travel burdens. Prospective families would benefit from an in-person visit focused on current room conditions, dining options and menus, medication administration routines, and recent maintenance/cleaning records to confirm that the facility’s operational standards meet their expectations.

    About Laurelbrook Nursing Home

Laurelbrook Nursing Home sits in Graysville, Tennessee, surrounded by trees with a quiet campus that folks sometimes find peaceful, and since 1956, they've run as a non-profit that links with the Seventh-day Adventist church, calling themselves the Laurelbrook Sanitarium & School, where most of the care staff includes registered nurses, LPNs, certified nursing assistants, and a range of therapists, and students at the academy can even train as CNAs through a special voluntary program, so teenagers get to learn housekeeping, laundry, dietary, and basic nursing on-site. The home holds 200 hospital beds, but only 50 of those are Medicaid-certified, and most rooms are shared between two people, though a handful of private ones cost more if someone wants one, and the place operates as an Intermediate Care Facility, which means no Medicare A's taken as a pay source, but Medicaid's accepted, and they've got long-term care with a grade of B, and most historical ratings fall into the A or B marks for care. Their nurse quality rates a B, hospital visits happen less than once per thousand resident days for folks staying long term, and about 91% of residents have had pneumonia shots, which some families feel is comforting. There's a Family Council, but no formal Resident Council, so relatives tend to speak up when meetings come around.

Staff focus most on traditional long-term care for elders, with services that include nursing care and rehab, as well as some respite care for short stays, and there are specialized wings built for those with Alzheimer's, memory problems, or physical disabilities, plus amenities like a 24-hour pharmacy, beauty salon, barbershop, an infrared therapy center, and a cafeteria. There's even a spot for nutritional counseling and home making, so people living here can get some help beyond pure medical needs. The facility's pretty full, with around 88% occupancy, and the overall review score floats at about 4.0 from a handful of folks online. For short-term rehab, grades run lower, rated D, which might make some families consider other options for quick recovery stints. Laurelbrook doesn't act as a Continuing Care Retirement Community, so it doesn't support the true step-up structure where someone could move between several levels, but staff give plenty of attention to long-term care, with a focus on good nursing support and professional development, including Gero Nurse Preparation and ongoing staff education. They canceled some in-person programs, but they offer virtual educational activities, and the whole site aims for what they call a holistic learning environment, mixing elderly care with vocational training for youth, so the sense is more like a working community than a purely clinical place, and it's clear faith, service, and practical skills all blend together. The campus sits at 200 Sanitarium Cir in Dayton, Tennessee, with more details on the website for families wanting extra guidance about long-term care, insurance, or daily life at this unique facility.
