    Mostly excellent care, stay vigilant

I mostly had an excellent experience: compassionate, professional nurses and therapists, a clean, beautiful facility, good food, and staff who kept our family informed - my relative recovered well after hip surgery and loved it. However, care wasn't flawless: we encountered rude/rough staff and a serious lapse (dehydration/UTI/pneumonia, exposed wounds) that prompted a corporate complaint. Overall I recommend it but advise staying vigilant.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed but leans positive: multiple reviews praise the staff, rehabilitation outcomes, facility appearance, and dining. Many reviewers specifically highlight compassionate, professional nursing and therapy teams who produced strong clinical outcomes such as wound healing and improved functional status after surgery. Several families emphasized clear communication and respectful treatment—staff kept relatives informed, treated residents with dignity ("not treated like a child"), and in at least one case the staff went beyond expectations by attending a resident's funeral. The facility is described repeatedly as clean and attractive, with fine accommodations and good food, and a friendly community vibe. Some reviewers explicitly recommend this center in the area and compare it favorably to alternatives.

Care quality and staff behavior are the most prominent and polarized themes. On the positive side, reviewers report excellent, compassionate nursing and skilled therapists who enabled strong rehab recoveries (notably hip surgery recovery) and improved outcomes post-surgery. These accounts emphasize professionalism, respect, and attentive care. Conversely, a smaller but serious set of reviews describe alarming incidents: rude bedside manner from individual nurses, rough handling by some CNAs, and outright allegations of poor clinical care. Specific clinical concerns raised include dehydration, a urinary tract infection, pneumonia, and disturbing descriptions of wound care failures (including exposed flesh during a sponge bath). These negative reports indicate inconsistency in the level of care and suggest that, while many staff are excellent, there are pockets of unacceptable practice that have led at least one family to file a corporate complaint and other families to describe the facility as "deplorable."

Facility, dining, and environment receive consistently positive comments from most reviewers. The physical facility is called beautiful and clean, rooms and accommodations are described as fine, and meals are noted as great by multiple families. Reviewers who had rehabilitation stays often commented that they left in better shape and that the therapy staff were professional and effective. The combination of a pleasant environment, good food, and capable therapists is a recurring reason families recommend the center.

Management and consistency are notable areas for attention. The juxtaposition of many very positive reports with a few very negative, even severe, accusations points to variability in care delivery. The fact that at least one family pursued a corporate complaint suggests they perceived systemic problems or at least were unsatisfied with local management responses. Potential residents and families should be aware of this variability: while many experienced exemplary, compassionate care, others reported serious lapses. The presence of both glowing praise and harsh criticism indicates that outcomes and experiences may depend heavily on which staff members are involved and on specific clinical scenarios.

Recommendations for prospective residents and families based on these patterns: visit and tour the unit, meet both nursing and therapy staff, ask about wound care and infection control protocols, inquire how the facility handles complaints and adverse events, request recent outcomes data for rehab and infection rates if available, and seek references from recent families. Overall, Nhc Healthcare - Johnson City demonstrates many strengths—particularly in rehabilitation, compassionate staff, cleanliness, and dining—but there are important, documented concerns about inconsistent care and serious incidents that warrant careful inquiry prior to placement.
