    Good therapy but staffing problems

I have mixed feelings. The facility is beautiful, clean, and offers excellent therapy, meals, activities and many caring nurses/CNAs - admissions, social services and some managers were very helpful and treated residents like family. But chronic understaffing, poor administration communication, long aide waits, unanswered calls, medication delays/mishandling, missed follow-ups after falls, reports of infections/missing belongings and occasional rude or unprofessional staff made me worry. If you prioritize top rehab and compassionate front-line staff, this place can be great - but confirm staffing, medication and communication practices before trusting a loved one's care.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews for The Waters of Memphis are highly mixed, with a strong polarity between raving praise for the facility’s rehab services, amenities, dining, and many individual caregivers, and serious complaints about inconsistent care, neglect, medication errors, and management/communication failures. Many families and former residents highlight exemplary therapy outcomes, clean and spacious surroundings, restaurant-style dining, and compassionate CNAs and therapists. At the same time, an alarmingly large number of reviews report critical safety and administrative issues that substantially undermine trust for other families.

Care quality and safety: One of the clearest patterns is great rehabilitation and clinical capability reported by many reviewers — “best rehab services,” “state-of-the-art rehabilitation center,” and multiple accounts of therapists producing strong recoveries. However, there are repeated and serious negative reports regarding basic nursing care and safety: long waits for assistance, missed or delayed medications (including delays of 12+ hours), unresponsive calls, soiled diapers left on residents, missed pain medication, falls with inadequate follow-up, and at least one report that an infected pressure sore led to a resident’s death. These negative incidents point to inconsistent bedside care and monitoring. Several reviewers specifically recommend family members remain vigilant and present to ensure proper care, indicating that quality can depend heavily on staffing at a given time or shift.

Staffing, personnel, and communication: Personnel feedback is highly mixed. Numerous reviewers praise CNAs, nurses, therapists, and named staff members (NP Katie, Unit Manager Jade, Mrs. Faye, CNA Judy) for compassion and responsiveness. Several reports cite staff who “work hard to rectify issues” and treat residents like family. Conversely, many reviewers describe chronic understaffing, overworked CNAs, high turnover, and episodes of apathy or unprofessional behavior from particular administrators and staff (some named negatively). Communication emerges as a key failure point in many negative reviews: unanswered phones, wrong numbers given, nurses unavailable, misinformation sent to emergency rooms, and poor coordination of discharge and home health. A few reviewers noted administration was responsive in some situations — weekly update calls and helpful admissions/administrative staff — but others reported apathetic or absent management, billing disputes, and perceived bias in admissions decisions.

Facilities, amenities, dining, and activities: The facility itself receives consistently positive remarks. Multiple reviewers describe The Waters of Memphis as clean, attractive, and new-looking, with large rooms that often include private bathrooms (though some rooms lack an in-room shower). Amenities such as a courtyard, salon, spiritual chapel, ice cream parlor, and a high-quality dining program (described as gourmet and restaurant-style) are frequently praised. Activities staff are often singled out as excellent and engaging, creating a family-like atmosphere for many residents. These strengths are consistently cited as reasons families would choose the facility for short-term rehab or as an enjoyable place for residents to live.

Administration, management, and operations: Reviews indicate inconsistent management performance. Several accounts commend admissions and administrative teams for helpfulness and strong communication, while other accounts accuse specific administrators of being unprofessional or disengaged. Operational issues reported across multiple reviews include billing errors, theft or missing personal items, maintenance delays (TV outage not repaired for days), and poor coordination at discharge. There are also troubling allegations related to medication handling (including one report suggesting improper personnel passing meds), which raise concerns about internal controls. On balance, management responsiveness appears uneven — strong in some cases and seriously deficient in others — suggesting variability across units or turnover in leadership.

Patterns and advice for prospective families: The reviews suggest the facility can deliver excellent rehabilitation, dining, and resident life when adequately staffed and managed, but there are recurring systemic risks related to staffing levels, communication, and consistent nursing care. Families should be aware of both the high positives (therapy outcomes, cleanliness, amenities, compassionate individuals) and the negatives (missed medications, delayed responses, falls, personal items going missing). Practical precautions include asking about current staffing ratios, medication administration protocols, recent incident reports, turnover rates, and procedures for handoffs to home health or hospitals. Visiting during different shifts and speaking directly with nurses and unit managers can help assess real-time conditions.

Conclusion: The Waters of Memphis presents a clear trade-off: a modern, well-appointed facility with top-tier rehab and delightful amenities, supported by many caring and skilled staff; yet recurring, serious complaints about basic nursing care, medication management, staffing shortages, communication, and administrative inconsistency that can pose risks to vulnerable residents. These reviews collectively recommend caution and due diligence — The Waters of Memphis may be an excellent choice for some patients seeking strong therapy and pleasant surroundings, but families should verify current staffing and safety practices and monitor care closely to avoid the lapses reported by multiple reviewers.
