    Caring staff but understaffed, costly

I moved my mom to Chesapeake Place and found a bright, clean, homey building with many kind, compassionate staff who helped make move-in smooth. Meals and rehab are often good, activities are engaging, and certain leaders (Carolyn and others) went above and beyond. However, chronic staffing shortages, poor communication (delayed callbacks), maintenance/security hiccups, and COVID visitation limits undermined confidence - memory care felt particularly understaffed. We saw medication/feeding issues, delayed assistance, and several falls/bruises; cleanliness was uneven in some areas. Pricing is high with recurring increases. I appreciate the caring people here but would strongly verify level-of-care, staffing stability, and responsiveness before committing.

The community offers both Assisted Living and Memory Care in a relaxed and friendly environment. Residents live in private or semi-private rooms, with several choices like Deluxe, Grand Suite, Premiere, and Regal apartments. Each apartment can come furnished or not, and most have private bathrooms, kitchenettes, patios or balconies, and emergency call systems. For safety and ease, there are wheelchair-accessible showers and full tubs, with special help for those who need standby support, mechanical lifts, or extra hands moving from place to place. Residents may keep pets, including cats and dogs.

Daily life at Chesapeake Place gives residents three chef-prepared meals in a spacious dining room, with options for guests, vegetarian diets, organic choices, and special meal plans for those needing low sodium or low sugar. The property offers a beauty salon with a stylist who comes on Tuesdays, outdoor patios, gardens, cozy sitting rooms, a card and game room, a theatre, and private dining areas, all intended to give comfortable spaces to gather, relax, or enjoy being with others. There's a strong social program directed by a full-time Activity Director, with things like stretching, yoga, art classes, gardening, community volunteering, outings, cooking classes, educational talks, intergenerational visits, and pet-focused activities.

Supporting residents' needs, trained staff help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, management of medicines, and support for those who wander or may have difficult behaviors. Chesapeake Place is designed for people living with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, using secured memory care buildings and technology like bracelet alarms to prevent wandering. Nurses and caregivers stay awake around the clock. Care includes help with transfers, diabetic support-such as monitoring blood sugar-plus behavioral and incontinence services, therapy services like physical, occupational, or speech therapy, and support groups. Residents get personalized care plans that focus on their strengths, aimed at keeping them safe and as independent as possible. Weekly housekeeping keeps rooms clean, and maintenance staff cover emergencies 24 hours a day.

Chesapeake Place also provides respite care for short stays and hospice support when needed. The staff creates an environment shaped by kindness and respect, seeing to both health and comfort every day. Residents can enjoy as much privacy as they'd like, with help nearby if they ever need it, and with plenty of opportunity to spend time in common areas, enjoy meals, or take part in activities that keep body and mind active. The entire property, from the sunlight in the apartments and vintage furnishings to special secure memory care sections, stays focused on giving seniors a comfortable and dignified place to live.

Pacifica offers a comprehensive continuum of care including independent living, assisted living, memory care, respite care, skilled nursing, and adult day care services. All communities focus on promoting well-being by meeting care needs while facilitating social interactions, activities, and wellness programs. Despite recent financial challenges leading to the bankruptcy of one management entity affecting approximately 20 California facilities, the majority of Pacifica's nearly 100 communities continue operating, maintaining their commitment to advancing senior living and providing peace of mind to residents and families through warm, family-like communities where each resident receives individualized attention while maintaining dignity and independence.
