    Clean, friendly, occasional management issues

I live here and overall I'm pleased - apartments are nice and clean with full kitchens, laundry on each floor, two meals a day, and a lively activities calendar (bingo, trips). The staff are warm, know residents by name, and go out of their way to help, and the food is generally very good. Downsides: management and communication can be inconsistent, and some residents report care/medication delays, maintenance problems and occasional pest/odor issues. Transportation and value could be better. I'd recommend it but advise asking direct questions up front.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews of Commonwealth Senior Living at the Devonshire is mixed but leans positive around culture, activities, and many staff members, while raising significant operational and care-delivery concerns. A large number of reviewers emphasize warm, caring, and personable staff who create a family-like atmosphere. Many residents and families praised the admissions and tour experience, the attentiveness of day-to-day staff, cleanliness of common areas, and an active recreation calendar that includes bingo, exercise classes, arts, trips to museums and restaurants, live music, and regular bus transportation. The physical plant receives praise for roomy one-bedroom apartments, many units with full kitchens, laundry facilities on each floor, accessible features in some apartments, on-site amenities such as a salon, chapel, library, weight room, and a grotto garden, and a generally safe, well-lit environment. Multiple reviewers singled out an engaged activities director, a chef who receives compliments, and a strong sense of community that makes residents feel at home.

Despite these strengths, there are recurring and significant negative themes that cannot be overlooked. The most serious concerns pertain to care quality and safety: several reviews report medication management failures including delayed or missed medications, medications running out or not being ordered, medication billing problems, and even reports of pain medication being locked away. Numerous reviewers also cited delayed responses to call buzzers or help buttons—instances of waits up to hours—which points to staffing or process failures and poses a potential safety risk for higher-acuity residents. Related to staffing, short-staffed shifts and lack of urgency from some personnel are mentioned frequently, contributing to missed meals, late assistance, and inconsistent housekeeping or maintenance follow-through.

Dining and food quality appear polarized. Many reviewers praised good meals and a pleasant dining room experience, while others described bland or poor meals, too-small portions, difficulty obtaining seconds, and limited weekend options. These inconsistencies suggest variability by shift, season, or kitchen staff. Maintenance and infrastructure problems are another repeated theme: isolated but alarming reports include no hot water for multiple days, persistent plumbing problems, slippery floors, broken closet doors, and unresolved maintenance requests. Some reviewers also reported pest problems (roaches and mice) and strong odors in hallways—issues that contradict otherwise frequent mentions of cleanliness and should be treated as serious red flags when evaluating current conditions.

Management, communication, and promises made during sales/marketing also draw mixed reactions. Several reviewers praised admissions staff and early move-in support, but many others complained about management responsiveness, lack of follow-through on promised amenities or renovations, unresolved billing disputes, and difficulty reaching administrators to escalate problems. A number of reviews warn that the sales pitch or incentives were not fully honored, advising prospective residents to confirm details in writing. There are also reports noting the community may not be suitable for residents requiring dementia-specific programming or higher levels of medical oversight; reviewers explicitly mentioned an absence of formal care plans and inadequate meaningful socialization for those needs.

Patterns within the reviews point to a facility with clear strengths in community life, staff warmth, and amenities, combined with uneven operational performance. Positive experiences tend to highlight consistent kindness from staff, strong recreational offerings, good location and security, and well-kept apartments. Negative experiences cluster around critical safety and quality-of-care issues—medication errors, slow emergency response, lapses in housekeeping and maintenance, and pest reports—and around inconsistent management communication and promise fulfillment. The result is a highly variable resident experience: some families report thriving loved ones and recommend the community, while others recount situations serious enough to prompt moving out or formal complaints.

For prospective residents and families, the reviews suggest several practical checks before deciding: ask for written policies on medication management and emergency response times; request recent pest-control and maintenance logs; verify which units include full kitchens and accessible features; confirm meal plans, portion policies, and weekend dining options; and obtain copies of any promotional offers or move-in incentives. In summary, Commonwealth Senior Living at the Devonshire appears to offer a warm, activity-rich environment with many caring staff and solid amenities, but prospective residents should carefully evaluate operational reliability, care protocols, and management responsiveness to ensure a fit with their medical and service needs.
