    Good community, outdated rooms, slow

I toured the Methodist Church home and overall liked it: staff were consistently kind, patient and helpful, residents seemed happy, the grounds and buildings are beautiful, meals and activities were good, and there's on-site LTC with reasonable pricing and no buy-in. My studio was a good size and my cat settled quickly, but rooms felt outdated, had a lingering smell, and move-in cleaning/repairs were disappointing. Service felt slow at times and staffing seemed limited, so I wouldn't pick it for someone needing full, all-stage care. The 10-minute drive to family is a factor for us, but the transition itself was smooth.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive with several clear strengths balanced by operational and maintenance concerns. Reviewers repeatedly praise the facility's aesthetics, grounds and buildings, the friendliness and helpfulness of staff, and the availability of a full continuum of care (on-site long-term care and the ability to provide full care at all stages). Many reviewers reported smooth transitions, patient staff assistance during move-in, informative tours, and generally happy residents. Dining and activities were mentioned positively (good meals and varied activities), and the absence of a buy-in payment and reasonable pricing were seen as financial advantages.

Staff and service are a major theme with some tension. Numerous comments highlight staff kindness, patient interactions, and hands-on help during moves and early residency — including staff who worked with families and allowed flexibility while moving furniture. At the same time, several reviewers reported slow service, instances of insufficient staffing, and at least one strong comment that staff were "doing a lousy job." This creates a pattern where interpersonal staff behavior (courteous, informative, supportive) is generally praised, but operational responsiveness and staffing levels are sometimes viewed as inadequate.

The physical facilities receive both high marks and notable criticisms. The grounds and exterior buildings are frequently described as beautiful, and studio sizes are appreciated. However, interior unit conditions raised concerns: multiple reviewers said rooms were outdated, needed updating, or had lingering smells. Move-in experiences were uneven — some residents found units dirty on arrival and felt cleaning claims were unsatisfactory. Specific, practical problems were also reported such as upstairs squeaking/noise, no rugs contributing to noise, and the inconvenience of having to carry heavy trash to the next level. Noise and sleep disruption were raised explicitly (waking early, being advised to sleep in another room), which may be consequential for prospective residents who are sensitive to sleep/stability.

Care continuum, financial model, and resident mix are strengths. The presence of on-site long-term care, the ability to provide full care at all stages, and a large independent resident population were all noted positively. The facility’s connection to a church background (Methodist home) and similarity to a known Durham facility were referenced, indicating an established organizational model that some families may recognize and trust. The "no buy-in payment" model and reasonable pricing were seen as attractive compared with other senior living options.

Dining and activities were consistently cited as positives: reviewers mentioned good meals and a varied activities program, with at least some stating they had no complaints in these areas. Social atmosphere also appears favorable in many reviews, with residents described as friendly and happy, which supports a positive community environment for independent living.

Notable patterns and concerns to weigh: maintenance and repair funding/response appear inconsistent — repairs unfunded or unaddressed were singled out — which ties into the move-in cleanliness and updating issues. Staffing appeared good in interpersonal terms but thin in operational capacity, leading to slow service in some cases. Practical considerations such as noise from upstairs and the need to carry trash between levels may affect quality of life for some residents. Finally, location/distance was mentioned as a limiting factor for at least one reviewer (a 10-minute drive), so proximity to family should be checked against individual needs.

Recommendation summary: Hermitage in Roanoke looks attractive for those who value beautiful grounds, a friendly community, on-site long-term care, and a lower upfront cost model. Prospective residents and families should verify unit condition and recent maintenance, ask about staffing ratios and response times, and inspect specific apartments for odors, noise, and needed updates. Clarify move-in cleaning standards and any assistance available for moving and trash disposal. If those operational concerns are acceptable or can be mitigated, many reviewers suggest the facility offers a supportive and pleasant living environment with good dining and activities.

    About Hermitage in Roanoke

Hermitage in Roanoke is a faith-inspired, not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community set on a peaceful ten-acre wooded campus with a main house called Casselwold, a Georgian mansion from 1916, and views that overlook the Roanoke Country Club, and you'll see wildlife and old trees all around, which makes it feel quiet and relaxed. Residents here can pick from independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and respite care, so they'll get the support they need as things change, and there's no heavy entrance fee, just month-to-month leases, which gives families a bit of flexibility. The apartments you find here range from studios to two-bedroom homes with options like private decks, patios, and even balconies if you like to watch the birds, and in the Country Club Apartments, you get reserved parking, gated entry, your own washer and dryer, ample storage, and even basic cable TV, plus water and sewage included, and if you live there, you'll have a personal pendant for emergencies so people can get to you quickly if something happens. For those thinking about the Boulevard Penthouses, you'll find features like travertine tile, custom trim, big sunny windows, and concierge service, and the building offers a furnished parlor and a private lobby, sitting high in the Ginter Park community with treetop views, which some say are mighty nice in the evenings.

Every resident gets weekly housekeeping, linen service, and dining options in the form of chef-prepared meals served three times a day, plus custom diets when needed, and you can join others for meals in common dining areas, or just eat in your own place if you'd rather be quiet some days. Activity calendars show plenty of things going on, from wellness programs and fitness classes to games in the Florida Room, tea on the patio, or woodworking in the on-site shop, and you'll see in their schedules trips and transportation for medical appointments, which is handy for people that don't like to drive as much anymore. The staff is available around the clock for emergencies and daily help if someone needs personal care, help with movement, dressing, medication, or just a check-in now and then, and they've got support in both independent and assisted living areas, plus a strong team in skilled nursing as well.

For health services, Hermitage in Roanoke offers a solid continuum, with physical, speech, and occupational therapy right on the campus, nursing care, medication management, and pathways to wellness that focus on health for mind, body, and spirit, plus respite care if someone needs a short stay after a hospital trip. The community is pet friendly, accredited by CARF-CCAC for meeting strict standards in care, and offers housekeeping, laundry, emergency response systems, controlled building entry, and storage units for all those keepsakes and things you collect over the years. Buildings like the Ring House and the Hermitage Roanoke main house are part of the property, and you'll find a community center at the heart of it, just a step away from most apartments, so folks don't have to walk too far to see neighbors or join in on activities. Residents and families can tour the grounds if they're interested, and while you won't be pressed to join, a lot of residents say it's a comfortable place that does a fair job of meeting individual needs while letting folks keep their own routines and independence for as long as possible.
