    Clean facility, caring staff, caveats

I'm generally very pleased - the facility is clean, welcoming, and the staff (nurses, CNAs, therapists) are caring, professional and recovery-focused; therapy was excellent, activities were outstanding, and admissions/office staff were helpful. Residents smiled, rooms and grounds were tidy, and COVID precautions were in place. That said, I saw occasional lapses: unresponsive or curt staff, phone hang-ups, delays in care (including long checks/undergarment issues), and some understaffing in rehab - so I recommend visiting, asking about staffing/check protocols, and staying involved. Overall I'd recommend it with those caveats.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Franklin Health & Rehabilitation Center are predominantly positive, with repeated high praise for clinical staff, therapy outcomes, cleanliness, and the activities program. A strong theme across multiple reviews is that the facility provides skillful, recovery-focused care—especially in physical and occupational therapy—and many patients and families describe measurable rehabilitation successes. At the same time, there are notable and concerning negative reports that point to inconsistent care and operational gaps; these negative incidents are less frequent in the dataset but serious when they occur.

Care quality and clinical teams: Most reviewers emphasize excellent nursing, medical, and therapy teams. Skilled therapists are singled out repeatedly for helping residents regain strength and functional use of limbs, delivering pain-free and effective rehab, and offering patient-centered approaches. CNAs are often described as smart, compassionate, loving, and above-and-beyond in their support. Multiple reviewers specifically call out nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians as considerate and professional. These consistent positive comments indicate a strong clinical culture focused on rehabilitation outcomes and respectful patient care.

Staffing, teamwork, and management: Reviews portray a staff that largely works collaboratively and treats residents like family; team effort and strong management are highlighted in many comments. Admissions staff are praised for assisting with insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid questions, and receptionists and housekeepers receive frequent positive mention for creating a welcoming environment. Several reviewers name individual activity staff (Angie, Hailey, Teresa, Teri) for exceptional engagement, which suggests a well-supported activities department and strong frontline morale. Management and some reviewers note the facility is a great place to work, which aligns with many accounts of dedicated staff.

Activities, engagement, and atmosphere: The activities program is an outstanding strength. Multiple celebrations (fashion shows, St. Patrick’s Day, worship services), singing, and large activity spaces were mentioned; residents are frequently described as smiling and engaged. Families appreciate the proactive activity director and the tangible positive effects on residents’ quality of life. The facility atmosphere is regularly described as cheerful, welcoming, and well-decorated, contributing to a pleasant visiting experience.

Facilities, cleanliness, and dining: Cleanliness is repeatedly noted as impeccable—both inside rooms and across grounds—which supports perceptions of a safe, orderly environment. COVID precautions (masks, temperature checks) were observed and appreciated. Dining has mixed feedback: some reviewers praise tasty food and the opportunity for communal meals, while others say food could be improved or that there were better choices previously. Overall, rooms and public spaces are described as pleasant and comfortable.

Communication and family involvement: Many reviews indicate good communication with families, including updates on appointments and health changes, friendly greeting upon entry, and staff who welcome family input. This is supported by reports that staff provide reassurance and look out for residents when family members cannot be present.

Safety concerns and inconsistent experiences: Despite the many positives, several reviews raise serious concerns. There are isolated but serious allegations of neglect—most notably a report of a patient left in a bathroom and another of undergarments not being checked or changed for over six hours—along with references to a 'warehouse mentality' and advice to thoroughly examine the facility before choosing it. Some reviewers reported unresponsive staff, calls being hung up, and failures to arrange transportation, which present safety and reliability risks. Understaffing was specifically mentioned for the rehab unit, and one reviewer described difficulty transferring related to Medicare Advantage coverage. There are also mentions of occasional rude or short staff members, including at least one physical therapist whose behavior was called out. While these negative incidents are not the majority, they are significant and warrant attention by management and families.

Patterns and recommendations: The dominant pattern is strong rehabilitation and caregiving delivered by compassionate, skilled staff in a clean, activity-rich environment. However, the negative reports form a consistent secondary pattern around staffing gaps, inconsistent responsiveness, and rare but serious lapses in basic care checks. Prospective families should weigh the facility's clear strengths in therapy, activities, and cleanliness against these intermittent reports of neglect and operational lapses. It would be reasonable for families to ask the facility directly about staffing ratios (especially on the rehab unit), care-check protocols (frequency of rounds and toileting/continence checks), transportation procedures, and measures taken to prevent lapses. Observing shifts, speaking with the admissions team about recent quality audits, and asking for references from recent families could help validate the consistency of care.

Bottom line: Franklin Health & Rehabilitation Center is widely praised for its therapy programs, attentive CNAs and nurses, proactive activities staff, and clean environment—leading to many successful recoveries and satisfied families. However, sporadic but serious negative incidents and reports of understaffing and inconsistent responsiveness are important caveats. Families should be encouraged by the many positive reviews but also perform targeted due diligence around the specific safety and staffing concerns highlighted by other reviewers.

About Franklin Health & Rehabilitation Center

Franklin Health & Rehabilitation Center sits at 720 Orchard Avenue, Rocky Mount, VA 24151, and offers both private and semi-private rooms with daily rates. This is a proprietary Skilled Nursing Facility with 120 licensed beds, focusing on recovery from planned surgeries, accidents, and illnesses, along with long-term care for people who need ongoing support. The administrator now is Mr. Justin Kelly, and you can find general information on their website at www.franklinhealthrehab.com. The facility has a modern, spacious layout, offering residents a comfortable and friendly place to recover or live long-term, with restaurant-style dining and social activities to keep minds active. Residents benefit from skilled nursing, therapy up to seven days a week, and an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, registered nurses, therapists, and dietitians who are part of the staff-not contractors-so the care stays consistent. They use programs like LifeWorks Rehab® Recovery Program, Recovery Map™, and Personal Report Card™ to help patients and families follow along with progress during recovery, with plans designed to meet individual needs. Rehabilitation is a big part of what they do, with a gym full of modern therapy equipment and a team trained to help restore strength and mobility after injuries or illness, and some staff speak other languages besides English. The facility helps residents use their Medicare Part B services to improve independence and quality of life, and it's listed as a provider in the online directory maintained by Providence, under the parent company Medical Services of America. The team also works to keep up residents' physical, mental, and psychosocial health with a restorative care approach, blending therapy, nursing, and activities, and the staff often takes part in local charity and community events like blood drives or community breakfasts. Franklin Health & Rehabilitation Center had 41,822 patient days during the last measured year, but right now they aren't accepting new patients. The center tracks its performance by using quartile rankings and other indicators, comparing things like costs, productivity, and community support with other facilities. The commitment here stays practical, with well-kept facilities, customized therapy based on need, and efforts to keep everyone comfortable, safe, and cared for, without offering any specialty-specific medical services.
