    Excellent therapy, poor nursing care

I had mixed experience: the rehab/therapy team was outstanding - 5-star, therapists went above and beyond, and dietary/housekeeping gave a homelike feel. But many nurses and staff were disrespectful or lazy and missed a bedsore, so I would not trust this place for a loved one.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed, with a clear and consistent split between strong praise for the facility's therapy/rehabilitation program and concerns about basic nursing care and staff conduct. Multiple reviewers singled out the therapy department as a major strength — calling it "5-star," describing therapists who "went above and beyond," labeling it the "best rehab," and saying the rehab team is "highly recommended." Those positive comments are emphatic and frequent, indicating that short-term rehabilitation services and therapy staff are a standout asset for Berry Hill.

At the same time, there are several serious and recurring concerns about day-to-day care quality and staff behavior. Some reviewers explicitly state the facility is "not suitable for loved ones" and report "poor care quality." Specific negative observations include "disrespectful staff," "lazy nurses," and a clinically significant lapse: a failure to identify bedsores. These criticisms point to inconsistent care practices and potential nursing or monitoring deficiencies that could affect resident safety and well-being.

The feedback on ancillary services and the environment is largely positive. Reviewers praise dietary services and housekeeping, and several mention a "homelike feeling," suggesting that meals, cleanliness, and the facility atmosphere are perceived as strengths. The enthusiastic descriptions of rehab experiences — one reviewer summarized them as "awesome times ten" — also suggest that activities tied to therapy are engaging and well-delivered.

Taken together, the pattern is one of pronounced strengths in rehabilitation, therapy staff dedication, dining, and housekeeping, contrasted with concerning variability in core nursing care and staff professionalism. The juxtaposition of "great care" and "strong nursing and therapy" from some voices with alarms about disrespectful behavior and missed wound care from others indicates uneven performance across shifts, staff members, or units. The presence of both high praise and serious complaints suggests that outcomes may depend heavily on specific teams or times rather than being uniformly consistent across the facility.

Clinically, the reported failure to identify bedsores is the most alarming specific issue because it signals possible lapses in routine assessments, skin checks, repositioning protocols, or documentation. Coupled with reports of inattentive or "lazy" nurses, this raises concerns about staffing levels, training, supervision, or accountability mechanisms. Conversely, the uniformly positive remarks about therapists imply that the facility's rehabilitation staffing, training, and culture in that department are effective and could serve as a model for other areas.

In summary, Berry Hill appears to offer excellent rehabilitation and therapy services, strong dietary and housekeeping support, and a generally homelike environment. However, reviewers also report notable and potentially serious problems with nursing care consistency and staff conduct, including missed clinical issues like bedsores. The overall picture is mixed: families seeking top-tier rehab may find Berry Hill highly satisfactory, while those prioritizing uniformly reliable nursing care and staff professionalism may have cause for caution based on the reviews provided.

    About Berry Hill nursing home

Berry Hill Nursing Home sits in South Boston, VA and provides both long-term and short-term care for people who need help, and it's got 120 licensed beds in a safe, clean building where they use all kinds of modern safety steps like electrostatic cleaning, HEPA air scrubbers, and MERV 13 filters, so the air stays clear and folks feel comfortable, and the team, led by Jason Claiborne, keeps up regular screenings and follows CDC guidelines, making sure masks are worn when needed and always putting health first. The home works with Principle Long Term Care, Inc., so it's privately run, but it's also licensed and certified for Medicare and Medicaid, which opens up care for a range of people, and there's always trained staff around, with round-the-clock skilled nursing and a wide variety of medical services, including short-term rehabilitation after surgery or illness, long-term care for chronic conditions, and help with daily tasks, so people can focus on healing or simply living each day with dignity.

Rooms come in both private and semi-private options, so you can pick between $190 for your own or $175 if you don't mind sharing, and every resident gets help from an interdisciplinary team, which means nurses, therapists, and other experts work together to make a care plan as personalized as needed, always focusing on independence, comfort, and respect, with folks getting IV therapy, therapy for wounds, help after strokes, and cardiac or pulmonary support. Berry Hill Nursing Home also offers daily activities, social events, and even special programs through partnerships like VirginiaNavigator, disAbilityNavigator, SeniorNavigator, VeteransNavigator, and the Lindsay Institute, so there's always something to do for people with different interests, and the staff works to get everyone involved, even with stuff like recreational programs, a beauty shop and barbershop, and organized outings.

People also get physical, occupational, and speech therapy right on site, and the home's designed to handle transportation, eye care, respite care, meals, and housekeeping, so families know that their loved ones aren't missing the basics. Berry Hill's philosophy is all about keeping up hope, building personal accomplishment, treating everyone with dignity, and unlocking what makes each person special, and the whole care team gets screened for skills and compassion, because they know it's not easy to need help in old age or after a health problem. With 64.3 full-time equivalent workers caring for residents across nearly 18,000 patient days in a year, this facility aims to keep things steady, safe, and predictable, making the day-to-day simpler for residents and their families who want steady care without surprises or lots of fuss.
