    Compassionate care with some drawbacks

I placed my mom here and overall I'm glad we did. The staff are professional, caring and attentive - with 24/7 nursing, visiting doctors, quick management responses and truly compassionate end-of-life care that gave us peace of mind. The smaller, older community is clean, organized and very homelike with engaging activities and good dining; the buy-in was favorable but monthly fees felt high. Drawbacks: occasional staff shortages/turnover, some medication/concierge hiccups, and a few unprofessional or sales-driven interactions; COVID lockdowns/outbreaks happened but were handled. Despite those issues, I'd recommend it for competent, compassionate care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Patriots Glen skew positive, with a large number of families praising the compassion, attentiveness, and clinical competence of the caregiving staff. Many reviewers emphasize a family-like, homey atmosphere, individualized attention, and strong emotional and end-of-life care. At the same time, a meaningful minority of reviews raise concerns about staffing stability, medication management, and occasional professionalism or cleanliness issues. The net picture is of a small-to-medium sized community that delivers strong hands-on care and warmth for many residents, but that has some operational inconsistencies that prospective families should verify during tours and follow-ups.

Care quality and medical services: The facility receives frequent commendation for hands-on care, quick responsiveness to changing needs, and supportive partnerships with hospice and visiting medical providers. Several accounts mention excellent physical therapy outcomes (residents regaining walking ability), effective hospice transitions, and 24/7 nursing or strong clinical oversight in some cases. Families repeatedly report compassionate end-of-life care and staff who go above and beyond. Conversely, there are specific and serious complaints about medication management—one review references a DSHS citation—and other reports note incorrect or slow handling of medication schedules. Prospective families should ask about current medication policies, recent survey history, and how medication administration errors are prevented and reported.

Staff, culture, and turnover: A dominant theme is staff kindness, genuine caring, and long-tenured employees who foster a warm, familial environment. Many reviews single out specific staff and the activities director for going the extra mile. However, reviewers also note staff shortages, quitting, and periods where care felt stretched thin. A handful of reviews describe rude or unprofessional interactions with certain care staff or managers, and some families encountered a sales-oriented approach from marketing that felt misleading. These mixed experiences suggest variability across shifts and roles; families should ask about staff turnover rates, staff-to-resident ratios by unit and shift, and how the community handles training and supervision.

Facilities, cleanliness, and environment: The physical plant is described mostly positively: an attractive courtyard and garden, renovated dining area and hallways, ice cream parlor, and pleasant common spaces. Several residents enjoyed private, well-appointed rooms and comfortable decor. That said, multiple reviews mention older carpeting in rooms and hallways (some stained), and isolated reports of urine odor or dirty rooms. Some residents and families praise the small, intimate scale—especially in memory care (19 residents in one noted unit with a 4:1 caregiver ratio)—which contributes to personalized attention. Visitors should inspect both renovated and older areas and check the status of ongoing remodeling or construction to understand the current condition.

Dining and amenities: Dining receives many positive remarks—described in places as restaurant-quality, varied, and accommodating of allergies—while a few reviewers found the food marginal or wished for more cultural/ethnic options (e.g., more Asian food). The community offers flexible add-on services (medication management, hospice), transportation for appointments, on-site services (dental, PT), and social outings. These amenities are cited as enhancing quality of life, though expectations around dining sophistication vary among families.

Activities and memory care programming: Many reviewers applaud an active calendar, creative activities, trips, and dementia-specific supports such as memory-care meetings and tailored programs. The activities director (several by name) is frequently highlighted as a strength. Conversely, some memory-care families reported insufficient meaningful engagement, limited outdoor access (doors kept locked), and a simpler, less elaborate activity schedule in the smaller memory-care unit. This split suggests variability in programming intensity and resident engagement across units; families should request sample weekly calendars for the specific unit under consideration and ask to meet the activities staff.

Management, communication, and administration: Numerous reviews describe responsive leadership, easy access to management, and staff who implement family requests promptly. At the same time, some families experienced slow or incomplete email responsiveness, inconsistent follow-up from marketing staff, and a perception of sales-driven misrepresentations. A few reviewers called out an unprofessional tour experience or lack of clarity around pricing and buy-in/fees. Prospective residents should verify fees, get written summaries of what is included, and clarify any verbal promises during the sales/tour process.

Safety, incidents, and COVID handling: Several reviews state that COVID outbreaks were handled competently and that communication during the pandemic was strong. Safety is generally reported as good, with some reviewers noting a strong safety record. However, there are isolated but concerning reports—emergency call buttons not answered promptly in at least one case, and medication-related quality issues that resulted in a citation—which warrant direct inquiry by families about incident history, response times, and corrective actions.

Pricing and value: Many reviewers call the community reasonably priced or affordable, with some noting discounts (e.g., veteran widow discount) and favorable buy-in terms. Others felt the monthly fee was higher than desired or categorized the community as overpriced in specific negative reviews. Value perceptions appear tied to expectations of amenities and the consistency of staff performance; families should compare total costs and services included versus comparable local options.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The dominant positive patterns are consistent praise for compassionate care teams, effective hospice and medical partnerships, a home-like culture, and engaging activities for many residents. The dominant negatives are operational variability—especially staff turnover/shortages—spotty medication management in some reports, inconsistent cleanliness in a minority of cases, and occasional issues with sales representation. For prospective families: (1) tour the specific unit and mealtime; (2) meet nursing and activities staff and ask about staff ratios by shift; (3) request written policies on medication administration, incident history, and recent state survey findings; (4) review sample activity calendars and ask how outdoor access is managed for memory-care residents; and (5) confirm fee structure and any promises made during tours in writing.

In summary, Patriots Glen appears to be a community where many residents receive warm, personalized, clinically competent care in a welcoming, small-community setting with good amenities and active programming. However, because reviews reveal variability in staff stability, medication practices, and some operational areas, careful, targeted due diligence is advised before making a placement decision.

    About Patriots Glen

Patriots Glen is a family-owned assisted living community run by Careage with more than 50 years of experience, sitting in the Pacific Northwest, and offering 82 licensed beds for older adults who need a little extra help. The place has a friendly setting with private senior apartments, both for assisted living and memory care, and folks like how both cats and dogs can live with you, with pet-friendly options and private baths, and there's space to bring hobbies and personal items. Residents get their meals cooked by a professional chef who supports special diets like gluten-free, low salt, or low sugar, and meals can be eaten in a restaurant-style dining room, private dining room, or as guest meals if family drops by, because the place works to make eating feel like home. They've got a fitness center, walking paths, gardens, outdoor patios, spaces for art or games, karaoke, trivia, gardening, movie and game nights, and even Wii Bowling, plus devotional services both on-site and off-site.

The nurses and caregivers work 24/7, giving help with bathing, dressing, remembering to take medicine, and getting around, plus they handle chores and laundry, and if you need it, there's extra help like physical, occupational, and speech therapy. There's Wi-Fi and cable, and the rooms have wheelchair accessible showers for safety. Security's important here, so there's a secured entry, parking for residents, scheduled transportation for errands or outings, plus a system that helps keep residents safe if they tend to wander, which goes double for those in the memory care areas, because those are built just for people who deal with dementia and Alzheimer's. There are four different floor plans for memory care, including private studio and companion suites, each with its own bathroom, plus technology like alert bracelets and special doors, and staff handle people who might leave or act out, so folks with behavioral or elopement risks have support.

Assisted living gives more independence but still offers medication reminders, mobility assistance, and supervision if health concerns come up, especially for people who need their insulin checked, help with bowel and bladder issues, or two-person assist or mechanical lifts, and they have respite options, too, which means you can stay as little as a couple weeks or longer if you need to recover from illness or a caregiver needs a break. The staff is known for being caring and respectful, and there's a doctor on-call as well as onsite licensed nurses around-the-clock, so complex medical needs and chronic conditions like diabetes are managed closely without needing to move somewhere else. The building is fully wheelchair accessible, and the main indoor spaces are smoke-free, plus both men and women can live here. Folks who want to look their best can visit the beauty salon or barber, and there's always some way to get involved or socialize, whether through activities, outings, or just chatting with neighbors in the gathering spaces.

Families or future residents can take a virtual tour to get a feel for the place, and there's a strong community spirit rooted in kindness and respect, which comes from a long tradition of providing reliable, hands-on care. There's really a focus on helping people live as independently as possible while covering their physical, emotional, and social needs, with support that's flexible to change as those needs grow.
