    Clean facility but unsafe, neglectful

The facility is very clean, nicely laid out with pleasant rooms, an open kitchen and fenced outdoor areas, and many staff I met were caring. However, high staff turnover and unresponsive management produce inconsistent, sometimes neglectful care - missed hygiene/showers, skipped meals, delayed medical attention, poor communication with families and even reports of theft. Activities and dining options are limited. Because of safety and care concerns, I cannot recommend this place.

    Summary review

The reviews for Cottages of Edgewood present a polarized picture: several reviewers describe an excellent, compassionate, and well-run facility, while others report serious lapses in care and management. Positive reviewers consistently highlight cleanliness, attractive and comfortable rooms, an open layout that includes visible meal preparation, and a peaceful environment. Many comments praise the caregiving staff and care team as dedicated, patient, and respectful of residents’ dignity. Multiple reviewers specifically note a safe, secure campus with a fenced outdoor area and appreciation for the organization’s stated values or mission.

Conversely, a number of reviews raise significant concerns about the consistency and reliability of basic care. Complaints include missed hygiene assistance (including skipped showers and the need for families to arrange help with face washing), skipped meals or inadequate meal service (one reviewer reported residents being given chips instead of full meals), and instances of belongings going missing. There are also troubling accounts of medical response failures: at least one review describes delayed attention following a suspected stroke and others mention slow or absent communication with families after health incidents. Reports of a bleeding rash and perceived neglect reinforce concerns about clinical oversight and follow-up.

Staffing and management appear to be a key axis of variability. Several reviewers praise the caregiving team, while others describe unresponsive management, false assurances about contacting families, and high staff turnover that increases uncertainty about continuity of care. This mix suggests that outcomes for residents may depend heavily on which staff are on duty and how recent management changes have been implemented. A pattern emerges where the facility's infrastructure and intent are rated highly by some, but execution and consistency—particularly for personal care and emergency communication—are problematic for others.

Facilities and programming are another area of mixed feedback. Multiple reviews describe the physical environment positively: very clean, nicely laid out with open common areas, an open kitchen, and many activities. At the same time, other reviewers say activities are limited and that there are restrictions in the dining experience (e.g., inability to mingle), which can negatively affect residents’ engagement. Distance to the facility is a practical concern noted by at least one reviewer, which may matter for families relying on frequent visits.

Safety and security impressions are similarly split. Some reviewers emphasize a secure campus and caring staff who foster a safe environment; others cite theft and poor responsiveness that undermine that sense of safety. The coexistence of reports praising security and reports of missing belongings suggests variable oversight or incident reporting and resolution practices.

Overall sentiment is mixed, with some families highly recommending Cottages of Edgewood for its cleanliness, compassionate staff, and pleasant environment, and others strongly advising to look elsewhere due to neglectful care, poor communication, and management failures. The most significant themes are inconsistency and variability in care delivery: when the staff and management perform well, residents and families report excellent experiences; when staffing or management falters, consequences include missed personal care, meal issues, lapses in medical response, and inadequate family communication.

For prospective residents and families, the reviews suggest several concrete due-diligence steps: tour the facility during a meal and an activity period to observe staff-resident interactions; ask about staff-to-resident ratios, staff turnover rates, and how the facility handles shift transitions; request written policies on hygiene assistance, bathing schedules, meal provision, and incident/medical emergency protocols; inquire how the facility documents and investigates missing items; and check recent inspection reports or references from current families. Given the polarized reviews, obtaining multiple references and verifying recent management or staffing changes will help assess whether positive practices are stable and whether the negative incidents reported have been addressed.

    About Cottages of Edgewood

Cottages at Edgewood sits in the small town of Edgewood, Washington, and it's made up of three cozy cottages that each house up to twenty residents, so altogether there's room for sixty people, which is a pretty big place by memory care standards, and those cottages sort of look and feel more like homes than bigger buildings, with kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms with fireplaces, and even their own laundry areas, so residents aren't lost in a crowd, and each cottage leads right outside to a big secure courtyard for walking, fresh air, and gardening, and the whole place is fenced in for safety. The building opened in 2015 and was built with safety and memory care in mind-the doors and windows have alarms, and staff keep an eye on things around the clock, with licensed nurses on site during the week and always available in emergencies, and everyone gets a personalized care plan from a director of nursing, created with the help of doctors and families, to fit each person's needs and keep up with the changes that can come with dementia.

The staff at Cottages at Edgewood specialize in memory care and have training in dementia and Alzheimer's, which means they know how to support residents who have trouble remembering, feel stressed, or get agitated, and besides that, they help with daily things like bathing, dressing, medications, insulin, high-level care needs, and even help with feeding or pureeing food if someone has trouble chewing. There's health programs that cover physical therapy, mental health support, rehabilitation, screenings, and they have care for diabetes, incontinence, or people who can't get around easily. When someone needs hospice care or a short respite stay, the community handles that too, so families can get extra help when it's needed, and there's licensed nurses, LPNs or RNs, taking care of the higher medical support. All rooms, whether private or shared, come furnished or can be set up with personal things from home, and every room has its own private or shared bathroom, air conditioning, internet, cable, and even client-controlled heat, along with hardwood floors and wheelchair access.

The dining options cover a wide range, including vegan, kosher, vegetarian, international dishes, meals made by a professional chef, pureed foods, and choices for people with special diets, and guests can join meals too-there's designated dining spaces and meals can be delivered to rooms if needed. Scheduled group activities focus on things that help with memory, like music therapy, arts and crafts, group discussions, and exercise, and residents can choose to be as involved or relaxed as they want, with quiet areas for unwinding and outdoor spaces with mountain and garden views. There are daily programs to maintain memory function, encourage socializing, and support independence, and everything, from the gardens to the patios and indoor walking areas, is designed to prevent wandering but still let people move around and enjoy a sense of freedom.

Transportation for appointments and community events is coordinated, families get education and support, and the facility partners with doctors, mental health pros, and hospice services as needed. The community has move-in help and staff check in regularly to make sure everyone's schedule and preferences are respected, but there isn't always much new information online since sometimes there are system errors with their online listings, so most people rely on direct visits or phone calls to learn more. Cottages at Edgewood holds certifications for adult residential care and enhanced adult residential care, is licensed for memory care, and follows Washington state rules to keep things safe and up to standard, and though ratings and reviews average about 4.0 on one site and 7.7 out of 10 overall, families tend to focus more on the staff's attention and the small, homey atmosphere. The whole place is built so residents with dementia can stay active, feel at home, and keep their dignity, all the while having the support they need.
