    Good facility, inconsistent care, fatal

I placed my loved one here and appreciated the organized, professional operation - a pleasant, knowledgeable director, clean/sanitized home, onsite staff, Liberty meds management, user-friendly bathrooms, bed/TV/laundry included, alarms for beds/falls and wheelchairs, varied weekly menus, and visiting hours 10:00-7:00. Many caregivers were compassionate, attentive, and the room and backyard view were nice. However, staff behavior and knowledge were inconsistent; I encountered rude, unhelpful caregivers and poor care that ultimately led to my loved one's death - I regret moving them here. Mixed recommendation: good facilities and administration, but be very cautious about care quality.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the provided review summaries is mixed but leans toward positive care and well-maintained facilities with important and serious exceptions. Multiple reviewers praise the facility for being organized, having a knowledgeable and pleasant director, and maintaining a clean, sanitized home. Several reviewers highlight compassionate, professional, and personalized care — describing staff as attentive to daily needs and offering a holistic caring approach. Practical amenities and safety features receive frequent positive mention: onsite staff coverage; a centralized alarm system for beds/floors and a separate wheelchair alarm; user-friendly bathrooms; medication management via Liberty; bed and TV provided; laundry and linens supplied; and a variety of weekly menus. The property features noted include a nice backyard view and walk-in closets. The facility advertises total care and a stated price of $4,800 per month.

Care quality and staffing emerge as the most significant themes, but they are inconsistent across reports. On the positive side, many reviewers explicitly recommend the facility and attribute good outcomes to caring, professional staff who provide individualized attention. These reviewers emphasize the director’s competence and the staff’s daily attentiveness. However, there are also strong negative accounts: some reviewers report poor staff knowledge and poor care quality, one family explicitly stated regret after moving a loved one there following that loved one’s death, and others described rude or unhelpful staff responses. This contrast suggests variability in staff performance, communication, or in how incidents are handled and escalated.

Facilities, safety, and logistics are generally described favorably. The home is repeatedly called clean and sanitized, bathrooms are accessible and user-friendly, and the alarm/monitoring setup is specifically noted as robust with separate wheelchair alarms — a clear safety plus. Practical conveniences — bed and TV included, laundry and linens provided, weekday menus that vary weekly, and set visiting hours (10:00–7:00) — are consistently noted and are likely to be attractive to many families. The presence of semi-private rooms and full occupancy were also reported; families should be aware that private-room options may be limited and that the facility may have waitlist/availability constraints when at full capacity.

Management and communication show both strengths and weaknesses in the reviews. Several reviewers praise an organized, pleasant director who appears responsive and knowledgeable, contributing to a sense of professional management. At the same time, reports of rude staff and unhelpful replies indicate lapses in communication or responsiveness. Given the serious negative reports, prospective families should probe how management handles complaints, incident investigation, staffing levels, and staff training to understand how isolated or systemic such problems might be.

Cost and value considerations are present: the stated price of $4,800 per month appears in the summaries and is listed among positive facts but may also be perceived as expensive by some families. Prospective residents and families should weigh that cost against the facility’s strengths (safety systems, laundry/linens, medications management, varied menus, and reported compassionate care) and the risk of variability in staff performance reported by other reviewers.

Recommendations for prospective families based on these patterns: ask for details on staffing ratios and training, request recent incident logs or examples of how complaint resolution is handled, tour the specific room options (privacy, walk-in closet, backyard view), confirm which amenities are included versus extra-fee, verify medication-management procedures with Liberty, and speak with current families if possible. The reviews indicate that Heart of Gold Adult Family Home can provide attentive, compassionate, and well-managed care for many residents, but there are documented serious concerns from some families that warrant careful, specific questions and follow-up during the placement decision.

About Heart of Gold Adult Family Home

Heart of Gold Adult Family Home sits in Lakewood, WA, between Gravelly Lake and Interstate 5, close to Lakewood Towne Center and St. Clare Hospital, and it provides a small, private, and homelike setting with care for up to six residents at a time, always aiming for personalized routines and plenty of attention. The staff's there around the clock, with two caregivers on shift and support for daily living needs like bathing, dressing, and grooming, along with medication management, meal preparation, and housekeeping, and they work in English. Residents get help with personal hygiene, eating, and mobility, and folks with memory loss or needing dementia care have custom routines and a secured home with call button systems and alarmed doors for those prone to wandering. The facility offers both single and shared rooms, wheelchair accessible showers, and Hoyer and stand-up lifts for people with limited movement, and there's a main shared shower along with private bathrooms for dignity and comfort.

There's 24-hour care and supervision with support for many conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke, cancer, traumatic brain injury, diabetes, paralysis, and mental health needs, plus wound, catheter, and feeding tube care, so people don't need to move if care becomes more complicated toward the end of life. The home welcomes male and female residents, is LGBTQ friendly, and follows visiting hours from 9 am to 8 pm. The setting features indoor and outdoor common areas, a large patio and grassy lawn, and gardens with fruit trees, as well as TVs in shared rooms, Wifi, resident parking, private telephones, laundry, a library, fitness center, and a salon/barbershop, so residents get some home comforts. For safety, there's a fire sprinkler system, emergency call buttons, and alarmed exits, and a generator in case of power outages.

They allow pet visits, but pets don't live there, and smoking areas are outdoors. There's a staff nurse practitioner and full-time RN, nurse visits, and doctors come by, and the team can help arrange visits from therapists, MSWs, and dietitians for special needs. The staff helps coordinate transportation to doctor's appointments or outings, and they also offer activities like games, sing-alongs, craft classes, holiday and birthday celebrations, regular exercise groups, and organized community trips, so residents can stay active and social if they want. There's support for visual and hearing impairments as well as special dietary needs including kosher meals.

Care options at Heart of Gold include assisted living, skilled nursing, independent living, hospice, respite (short-term), and adult day care, and they accept residents needing developmental disability support and behavior supports like the HCS Meaningful Day and DDA programs. The house keeps its licensing up to date (license number 750859) and DSHS verifies their profile, but Medicare isn't a payment option unless certified by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Rates for full care start at $5,000 and go up to $6,500 per month. Touring hours run weekdays and weekends, 8 am to 7 pm, and there's always a live person answering calls at any hour, seven days a week. There's one vacant bedroom, private dining with family is available, and the team offers free consultations and assessments for families and future residents. The place aims to provide clear, consistent, and compassionate support so seniors can live in comfort while families have peace of mind.
