    Warm caring staff, plentiful activities

I'm very pleased with Laurel Place - the staff are warm, compassionate and treat residents like family, keeping medical needs well managed and staying in close contact with our family. The clean, home-like building in a lovely spot overlooking the Straits of Juan de Fuca offers plentiful activities, live entertainment, great food and real peace of mind. Move-in was smooth, staff go above and beyond, and I'd recommend Laurel Place.

    Summary of reviews

Laurel Place presents a mix of strengths and operational challenges. Many families describe a comforting, home-like atmosphere supported by compassionate, hands-on care staff and a lively activities program. The facility’s setting and physical plant — waterfront and mountain views, well-kept exterior, modern common areas, and spacious apartments with large bathrooms and ample closet space — are frequent positives that contribute to resident comfort and family confidence.

Care quality is generally described as attentive and respectful. Reviewers commonly highlight caregiving staff who are patient, accommodating, and able to build family-like relationships. At the same time, several accounts indicate variability in day-to-day personal-care delivery: inconsistent bathing schedules, infrequent bathroom attention for some residents, and occasional gaps in routine grooming tasks. Staffing shortages and turnover are cited as underlying factors that can affect consistency of care and the pace of response to resident needs.

Dining and nutrition receive mixed but often favorable comments. Multiple reviewers praise the chef and portions of the menu as tasty and comforting, and the community hosts frequent social meals and events. Conversely, other reviewers report limited menu variety at times and uneven accommodation of special dietary preferences, suggesting that meal options and consistency may fluctuate.

The activities program is a prominent strength for many residents: scheduled exercise, arts and crafts, games, outings to regional attractions, live entertainment, and regular parties. These offerings are credited with improving mood, engagement, and overall quality of life. However, there are isolated observations about variability in activity staffing and a few accounts that describe periods with limited programming or the absence of a dedicated activities director.

Facility condition feedback is mostly positive about the building’s decor and common spaces, but there are intermittent sanitation and odor concerns noted in specific areas, and at least one cited animal-related incident that families found unacceptable. These items appear episodic but merit attention from prospective families who prioritize housekeeping and facility hygiene.

Management and administration emerge as the most mixed domain. Positive remarks include helpful move-in coordination and clear clinical communication in many cases. At the same time, reviewers describe inconsistent professionalism from some administrative staff, slow responses to phone calls or refund requests, and billing transparency issues including unexpected charges and requests for itemized statements. Visitation practices and family interactions are another source of concern for some families who experienced firm or inconsistent enforcement of access rules.

Overall, Laurel Place offers many qualities that families value: a homelike environment, engaging social programming, attractive facilities, and a core of dedicated caregiving staff. Prospective residents and their families should weigh those strengths against recurring operational themes — staffing stability, administrative communication, billing transparency, and consistent hygiene/personal-care practices — and discuss these specific areas during tours and contract review. Visiting at different times of day, meeting direct-care staff, observing mealtimes and activities, and requesting written policies on billing and visitation can help clarify whether the facility’s operational patterns align with a family’s priorities.

About Laurel Place Assisted Living & Memory Care

Laurel Place Assisted Living & Memory Care sits in Port Angeles, WA, on the Olympic Peninsula and has been giving compassionate care since the late 1990s. The community is managed by Caring Places Management and has 46 licensed beds. Residents get both assisted living and memory care services matched to their needs, in a setting where staff make it feel welcoming and friendly. Amanda Bristow is the executive director, and caring staff are always there to help. Staff help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and medication, and they're trained in memory care for people living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. The building has 41 apartments, including one-bedroom and studio layouts, each with a kitchenette and bathroom, and the showers are all wheelchair accessible. There's a new memory care area with 4 shared suites and 8 private studio apartments. Common areas offer cozy spaces with fireplaces and TVs, plus an open dining room with natural light and views of the Salish Sea from the patio.

People enjoy nutritious, dietician-approved meals with vegetarian options and always a choice of entrees and snacks, and meals happen in a comfortable, bright dining area. The activity program offers music, entertainment, games like Bingo, scheduled trips, scenic drives, and visits from entertainers, and there are devotional services both onsite and offsite. Residents can use outdoor and indoor common areas, join friends in the library or second-floor loft, and visit the salon with a licensed beautician right in the building. Pet accommodations are close by, and everyone has access to resident parking, bus lines, and complimentary transportation for outings or medical appointments, with staff help if needed. There are full tubs, wheelchair accessible showers, emergency call devices in apartments and common spaces, and weekly housekeeping and laundry. Emergency help is always available, and a licensed nurse is on staff. Each resident gets a personal care plan that's updated as needs or preferences change.

For safety, the building has smoke detectors, fire sprinklers, and electronic security throughout. Laurel Place provides both respite and hospice care, diabetic and non-ambulatory support, incontinence care, and medication management. Staff aim to help every resident keep as much independence as possible, offering different levels of help as needed. Memory Care services include special neighborhoods designed to reduce confusion and prevent wandering for those with dementia, and caregivers get extra training for these needs. The facility has earned good feedback with a rating of 4.3 from 18 reviews and has been recognized for high standards, kindness, and friendliness, with awards for Best of Senior Living and Most Friendly. The environment is social, respectful, and focused on each individual's dignity and well-being.
