    Compassionate staff, systemic safety failures

I appreciated the compassionate, attentive staff and the homey rooms/amenities, but my experience was ruined by poor management and communication. Recurring safety and cleanliness problems (dirty rooms, urine smells, missing sheets/clothes, meds left on the floor or in pockets, falls with slow response), understaffing, lost belongings, and aggressive billing for a very high price made this stressful. Because of those systemic issues I cannot recommend it despite the wonderful caregivers.

Brookdale Puyallup South is a single-story senior living community in the Puyallup area that offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, all on one campus. Residents can choose private or semi-private suites, including a 315-square-foot private suite or a 625-square-foot two-bedroom suite with a shared bathroom, and many rooms offer large windows for plenty of light. The building has controlled access and emergency call systems in each unit to help keep everyone safe, plus private bathrooms and options for cable or satellite TV. The community has amenities like a library, sunroom, screened porch, comfortable lobby, salon with a shampoo station, community kitchen with white cabinets and blue tile, and common areas set up for easy gathering. The outside spaces include walking paths, a patio with tables and umbrellas for relaxing, and a courtyard.

Staff at Brookdale Puyallup South are available 24/7 to help with daily living needs, offer home-style meals in the dining area, and help residents with memory loss through specialized programs and consistent care assignments. There's a memory care team that supports people at all stages of Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, and the community uses signature Brookdale programs like the Morning Mental Workout and Daily Life Skills to keep residents engaged. Activities include nature walks, gardening, fitness classes, bingo, coffee socials, and other creative or hobby-focused events, and they also use pet therapy to add comfort. Many apartments are pet-friendly and accessible, with options for washers, dryers, and air conditioning in some rental options nearby. Brookdale Puyallup South has a reputation for person-centered care, with experienced dementia care staff who take time to learn about each resident's routines and health needs. The staff focus on reducing confusion and behavioral symptoms and use personalized routines to help residents feel at home and safe.

Meals are nutritious and designed to include needed vitamins and minerals, and caregivers are trained to help with special dining needs. The community offers Wi-Fi, transportation, visitor parking, housekeeping, and special safety features for residents who may wander. The building has a homey, family-oriented feel, and people often describe the environment as supportive and caring. Residents can bring their own furniture if they prefer unfurnished units, and everyone has access to community events, signature programs, and Brookdale's online resources. About 31% of the licensed 64 beds are occupied, and the community supports residents and their families through all stages of aging with a wide range of services. There are legal protections in the city for housing, income, and LGBTQ rights. The continuing care setup means residents don't have to move as their care needs grow, and the focus is always on comfort, social connections, and resident well-being.

    About Brookdale

Brookdale Puyallup South is managed by Brookdale.

Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) is the largest senior living operator in the United States, managing over 640 communities with capacity for approximately 59,000 residents across 41 states and employing around 36,000 associates. Founded in 1978 and publicly traded since 2005, Brookdale solidified its market leadership through major acquisitions including American Retirement Corporation (2006) and Emeritus Senior Living (2014), making it the only national full-spectrum senior living company. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, Brookdale has topped the American Seniors Housing Association's ASHA 50 list and Argentum's largest providers list for multiple consecutive years.

The company's comprehensive care continuum includes independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Brookdale's signature Clare Bridge program, developed over 30 years ago by dementia-care experts, provides specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care through two distinct levels: Clare Bridge communities for comprehensive memory support and the Clare Bridge Solace program for advanced-stage dementia residents. The program is recognized by the Alzheimer's Association® for incorporating evidence-based Dementia Care Practice Recommendations and features secure environments, enclosed courtyards, Daily Path programming with six structured activities daily, and the InTouch technology platform offering personalized brain-stimulating games and therapeutic content.

Brookdale's holistic Optimum Life® wellness approach balances six dimensions—Purposeful, Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Intellectual—implemented through signature programs including B-Fit (eight exercise class options), Brain Fit (mental fitness workouts), My Life Story (resident storytelling), EngagementPlus (interest-based connections), Growing Together (collaborative learning), and The Ageless Spirit (kindness and gratitude practices). The Embrace Family Partnership provides caregiver education and support for families of memory care residents.

The company's Brookdale HealthPlus® care coordination model, winner of the 2024 Argentum Best of the Best Award placing it among the top 1% of operators, is a technology-enabled healthcare service featuring dedicated RN Care Managers who proactively manage residents' health, coordinate care transitions, and help prevent avoidable hospitalizations. Communities using HealthPlus report 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% more completed annual wellness visits. The Personal Solutions program delivers hygiene products, medications, and daily necessities directly to residents' doors with discreet packaging and monthly billing convenience.

Following a strategic divestiture of its home health and hospice operations to HCA Healthcare (completed December 2023), Brookdale now focuses exclusively on senior living operations while maintaining its position as the industry's largest operator, committed to its mission of enriching lives with compassion, respect, excellence, and integrity.
