    Some excellent staff, systemic failures

I had a mixed but mostly worrying experience after placing my loved one here. The rehab, respiratory team, some nurses and CNAs (Sophie in particular) were excellent - great PT, good meals, helpful doctors who managed pain, and clean, homey areas. But the place is badly understaffed, communication is poor, call lights often go unanswered, meds and care were delayed or omitted, belongings went missing, and I saw signs of neglect (bedsores, infections) and reports of abuse. Administration was unresponsive about transfers, billing, and complaints. Bottom line: some staff are wonderful, but systemic failures make this facility risky - proceed with caution.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is highly mixed and polarized, with clusters of very positive experiences and numerous severe negative complaints. On the positive side, Vancouver Specialty and Rehabilitative Care is repeatedly praised for its strong rehabilitation services, capable respiratory/vent care (including a vent unit), individualized attention in a relatively small facility footprint, and certain standout staff members. Reviewers frequently single out physical therapy as excellent and credit therapists for meaningful recovery progress. Many families also reported an organized admissions/transfer process, helpful social work involvement, on-site amenities (hairdresser, transportation, activities), and instances of excellent nursing care that provided dignity and effective pain control. Several reviewers also noted that public health and infection-control protocols (sanitizing, PPE, hand hygiene) were followed and that areas were clean and newly remodeled in many parts of the facility.

However, the negative reports are substantial and often center on systemic staffing, management, and safety issues. A recurring theme is understaffing and poor staff-to-resident ratios, with night shifts singled out for particular problems: call lights ignored, CNAs distracted or on phones, extended delays to attend to soiled beds, and CNAs yelling in hallways. Multiple reviewers described dangerous lapses in basic care—beds left soiled with feces and urine for long periods, residents not bathed, bedsores, and missed or omitted medications. There are also serious allegations of medical neglect culminating in hospitalization for aspiration pneumonia, oxygen-line problems, medication shortages at discharge, and in some accounts, preventable infections and deaths. These are not isolated minor complaints but repeated, specific assertions that indicate inconsistent standards of care and lapses in clinical oversight.

Facility conditions and cleanliness are another area of stark contrast. Numerous reviews praise the remodeled, home-like atmosphere and cite clean, organized rooms and fast laundry service; yet other reviewers describe the facility as smelling like a kennel or urine, with feces odor, unsanitary rooms, and soiled linens. This bifurcation suggests uneven cleanliness practices that may vary by unit, shift, or resident population. Dining and amenities are similarly inconsistent: some reviewers praise gourmet-quality food and plentiful portions, while others call the food horrible and note missed or incorrect meals.

Staff behavior and culture present a split picture. Many reviewers praise compassionate, knowledgeable, patient, and attentive staff — naming individuals (e.g., Mitchell, Sophie) — who provide respectful, dignified care and good communication with families. At the same time, there are multiple, strongly worded reports of rude or abusive staff, allegations that staff have cussed at patients, and accusations that some staff members were fired or underpaid, contributing to a toxic management environment and low morale. Theft or disappearance of personal belongings and jewelry is reported multiple times, with families indicating unresolved investigations and no reimbursement, which raises serious concerns about property controls and administrative follow-through.

Administration, accountability, and communication are recurrent concerns. Several reviews allege unresponsive administration, poor follow-through on complaints, billing errors and overpayments, unresolved refunds, and even claims of fake five-star reviews intended to mask problems. Other reviews describe responsive and helpful administration, coordinated care conferences, and clear family communication. The contradictory reports suggest variability in administrative responsiveness—some families experienced proactive case management and follow-up, while others felt stonewalled or ignored.

Regulatory and safety signals appear in the feedback: reviewers mention state evaluations and warnings, and some allege preventable harm that would warrant inspection. The mix of glowing rehab and respiratory care with serious allegations of neglect, infection, and medication omission indicates heterogeneity in care quality across units or shifts. For prospective residents and families, that pattern implies that outcomes may depend heavily on the specific care team, time of day (day vs night), and unit assignment.

In summary, Vancouver Specialty and Rehabilitative Care demonstrates notable strengths in rehabilitation, respiratory care, individualized attention in parts of the facility, and several highly dedicated staff members and services. At the same time, persistent and serious negative themes—understaffing, night-shift failures, allegations of neglect and abuse, sanitation concerns, theft of resident property, management and billing problems, medication errors, and inconsistent communication—are frequent enough to warrant careful scrutiny. Families considering this facility should verify current state inspection reports, ask specific questions about staffing levels (especially nights), medication-safety and property-theft policies, and unit-specific conditions. Visiting in-person, checking references, and confirming who will be on the care team (and their shifts) will be important steps to assess whether this facility can provide the reliable, safe care their loved one needs.
