    Compassionate skilled staff kept independence

I'm deeply grateful for the family-like, compassionate staff who lead with love and skill - Gina is a Godsend. Their therapists are highly skilled and results-oriented, and the facility is clean, secure, with good food and meaningful activities. Even when short-staffed, they stayed in touch, provided attentive care, and kept my loved one independent and comfortable.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Pocahontas Center are strongly positive, with consistent praise for the quality of clinical care and the compassion of the staff. Multiple reviewers highlight the center's therapy services as a standout strength — therapists are described as experienced, diverse in background, current in their clinical knowledge, and results-oriented. These comments point to rehabilitation and therapy being a core competency for the facility, and reviewers credit therapy staff with achieving positive treatment outcomes and taking care seriously.

Care and clinical services: Therapy and clinical care receive repeated commendation. Reviewers explicitly note broad clinical abilities and up-to-date skills among therapists, suggesting the center is effective in managing both routine rehabilitation needs and more complex conditions; one review specifically cites care for a resident with ALS. The facility is described as providing the highest quality of care and being results-oriented, which indicates successful functional or medical outcomes post-treatment. In addition to therapy, clinical responsiveness is emphasized: staff were attentive during an acute fainting incident and kept family members informed, reinforcing a perception of competent, vigilant care.

Staff and culture: Staff demeanor and culture are major positive themes. Multiple reviewers call the staff kind, compassionate, loving and caring; terms such as 'dedicated caregivers', 'family-like care', and 'puts family at ease' are used. Specific personal appreciation is noted (e.g., 'Gina is a Godsend'), indicating memorable individual staff members who make a meaningful difference to families. Reviewers also highlight good communication — staff 'kept in touch with family' — and involvement in community or group visits (a positive visit with Marlinton Nazarene Church), which suggests the staff prioritize resident connection and family engagement.

Facility, cleanliness, and security: The physical plant is consistently described as clean, well-kept, and well-maintained. Security is cited as 'great', and outdoor or amenity spaces like the boardwalk are enjoyed by residents and family visitors. These details point to a facility that attends to safety, cleanliness, and resident quality of life beyond clinical care.

Dining and daily living: Dining receives favorable comments — several reviewers said the food tasted good and that they no longer needed to cook — indicating meal service is a positive aspect of day-to-day living. Reviewers also mention that the center supports resident independence (ability to come and go) while providing attentive supervision.

Concerns and patterns for improvement: The most commonly mentioned concerns are relatively limited but notable. Short-staffing is brought up by some reviewers; although comments also note staff continue to provide the best possible care despite this, occasional staffing shortages may affect workflow or resident experience at times. Room size is another recurrent point — rooms are described as small — and a few reviews mention the adjustment required when sharing a room. These issues do not appear to dominate the overall sentiment but are consistent enough to be considered areas for attention.

Activities, community, and family experience: Reviews reference meaningful activities and community engagement (church visit, the boardwalk) that contribute to a positive resident experience. Families describe feeling supported and grateful, with staff often going beyond routine duties to create a comforting environment during transitions and medical events.

Overall assessment: The aggregate picture from these reviews is of a facility that excels in therapy and clinical care, staffed by compassionate, communicative, and dedicated caregivers who create a family-like atmosphere. The center is clean, secure, and provides good dining and opportunities for engagement. Primary areas for improvement are staffing levels and living-space size/privacy when rooms are shared. Given the consistent praise for clinical outcomes and staff responsiveness — including during emergencies and when managing complex illnesses — Pocahontas Center appears to offer high-quality, person-centered care with some manageable logistical limitations.

    About Pocahontas Center

Pocahontas Center sits in Marlinton, West Virginia, and offers a wide mix of care options for older adults, with both assisted and independent living, dementia care, and memory care available, and it's open all the time so families can visit when they need. You'll find specialized services like Alzheimer's care, orthopedic rehab, and transitional units, and the center also offers in-home caregiving, senior transportation, post-hospital rehab, long-term and respite care, hospice care, and contract therapy such as physical, occupational, and speech therapies. The center works with Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances, and has an AHCA Bronze Quality Award and a partnership with the We Honor Veterans program. Staff provide IV therapy, wound care, pain management, discharge planning, and personal care like audiology, colostomy care, dental and podiatry visits, psychiatric support, and medication management. Dr. Kelby Faulkner acts as Medical Director, with Marie Soriano leading as Director of Nursing and Jody Mohr serving as Administrator, and there are also dietitian consultants and dietary managers for food and nutrition. The facility has private and semi-private rooms, climate control, communal lounges, dining rooms, a café, beauty salon, chapel, activity room, balconies or patios, a courtyard, and scenic views. Services include laundry, housekeeping, pharmacy delivery, coordinated transportation, 24-hour emergency response, security, computer and internet access, and mail and newspaper delivery, plus they allow pets and offer social and recreational events, church and worship services, cultural and educational activities, and group programs. There's a nurse turnover rate of 34.2%, which is lower than the state average of 48.5%, but nurse staffing averages 2.86 hours per resident per day, below the state's 3.7 average, and the center has 68 beds with about 62 residents each day, but inspection reports, which everyone can look up, show 39 deficiencies-a few serious-including issues about nurse staffing and residents' protection from abuse, and there are two infection-related citations, so that's all important to consider. Genesis Healthcare Llc manages Pocahontas Center, with Diane Morris in charge since October 2021, and the center has been active in the Social Care Network as well, offering social work support, counseling, education, and connections for both residents and families, plus the place keeps laundry, maintenance, security, phone, and wireless internet services running around the clock for daily comfort and safety, but it's a good idea for families to verify licensing details themselves. Care.com hasn't confirmed any awards or third-party accreditations for Pocahontas Center, so people looking for senior care can use all this information when deciding if this place is the right fit for their needs.
