    Clean facility but unsafe, understaffed

I liked the clean facility, park views and amenities, and several caregivers who were kind, knowledgeable and treated residents like family. But I also witnessed chronic understaffing, poor communication after an ownership change, unsafe incidents (overdose, choking, bedsores), smoking staff ignoring signs, refusal of transport, and low-quality/poorly prepared food. Good location and some wonderful staff, but serious safety, staffing and care problems mean I cannot recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment for Glenwood Healthcare Center is highly mixed and polarized. Multiple reviewers praise the facility for strong, compassionate caregiving, coordinated teamwork, and attractive physical features, while others report serious safety, staffing, cleanliness, and food-quality problems. The reviews together paint a picture of a facility that has historically been well-regarded and that still has notable strengths, but that also appears to have experienced periods of decline or inconsistent performance that have led to serious incidents and strong negative impressions.

Care quality and safety are among the most divergent themes. On the positive side, several reviewers describe caregivers as attentive, knowledgeable, compassionate, and like family, and some say the facility is "the best place," with staff who clearly care about residents. Conversely, there are multiple, specific reports of neglect and hazardous events: an overdose, a choking incident, development of bed sores, refusal of hospital transport, and other allegations of neglect and mistreatment. These are serious safety concerns cited in the summaries and suggest variability in clinical oversight and incident response.

Staffing and staff behavior are also inconsistent across reviews. Some reviewers highlight that the facility is well-staffed and that management collaborates effectively with frontline workers, producing well-coordinated teamwork. Others, however, describe chronic understaffing, overworked employees (especially in the kitchen), and unresponsive staff with poor communication. There are also complaints about staff smoking on campus despite smoke-free signage, and at least one review calls out poor staff behavior and an overall unsafe environment. This mix suggests staffing levels and staff culture may fluctuate over time or vary by unit or shift.

Facilities, location, and amenities receive generally positive remarks. Many reviewers like that the center is clean (according to some), offers semi-private and private rooms, and has attractive park views and extensive outdoor amenities — trails, fishing, paddle boating, shelters for picnics and grilling, miniature golf, and two playgrounds. The facility is described as historically nice and previously rated very highly, which supports the notion that the physical environment and recreational offerings are strengths.

Dining receives polarized feedback. Some reviewers call the meals "wonderful," while others sharply criticize the food service: cold hamburgers (mostly raw), hard cold fries, low-quality or prepackaged food, and an understaffed, overworked kitchen. These complaints indicate inconsistent meal quality and raise concerns about food preparation, staffing, and dining supervision. The coexistence of glowing and scathing meal reports suggests variability across days, shifts, or changes over time.

Management and administration are likewise described in conflicting terms. A number of reviewers commend helpful administration and effective leadership that works collaboratively with staff. At the same time, others report poor operation, an ownership change that is implied to have affected quality, and administrative failures tied to safety and neglect. The presence of both supportive and critical comments about leadership indicates that management performance may have recently changed or be perceived differently by different families.

Patterns and takeaways: the most notable pattern is high variability. Several reviewers portray Glenwood as an excellent, loving environment with dedicated staff and strong programming, while other reviewers report very serious lapses in care, safety, cleanliness, and food quality. The negative reports include specific, severe incidents (overdose, choking, bed sores, refusal of hospital transport) that should be considered red flags by prospective residents and families. Positive reports emphasize compassionate staff, good teamwork, and excellent amenities. There is also evidence that changes in ownership or staffing could be a factor in the inconsistent experiences.

Given the split in experiences, prospective residents and families should investigate current conditions directly: ask about staffing levels and turnover, recent incidents and how they were handled, food service routines, air conditioning and housekeeping standards, policy enforcement (e.g., smoking rules), and any recent changes in ownership or management. Request recent inspection reports, staffing ratios, and references from current families. The reviews indicate Glenwood has significant strengths but also serious and specific concerns that warrant direct verification before making placement decisions.

    About Glenwood Healthcare Center

Glenwood Healthcare Center sits over at 1924 Glenwood Park Road in Princeton, West Virginia, and has 80 certified beds, so it can care for a good number of residents at once, and it's been managed by Health Care Facility Management, LLC since July 2022 while being part of the CommuniCare family of companies, this one being a family-owned post-acute care provider who seems to have their hand in a lot of care facilities. Folks can find a real variety of care options here including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, long-term care, memory care for folks who need help with memory issues, hospice, home care, adult day services, and short-term rehab for those coming from the hospital who just need a place to get their strength back before heading home. You'll see several therapy options, like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, all provided onsite, and these services are meant to help people keep up their independence or recover after injury or illness. The staff give about 4.00 nursing hours per resident per day, which is a bit better than most places in the state, and the nurse turnover rate is lower than what's typical, though like a lot of places, keeping the same caregivers isn't always easy.

Rooms here range from comfortable private to shared spaces, with some overlooking Glenwood Park Lake, and people spend time in common areas like a chapel, cafe, library, and a sunroom, all of which make the facility more like a little town. Woody, the resident pet, adds a touch of home, and you'll even find activities like bingo, pet therapy, and dancing to brighten up the days. Meals are served in a dining room, and there's a regular schedule of both social and educational events so folks don't feel left out or bored.

Residents and their families work with staff to develop and update care plans, and the facility says they try to keep relationships strong with families and focus on the needs of each individual, whether that means medication management, health monitoring, wound and palliative care, or help with day-to-day living. Amenities include health monitoring, specialized programs for memory care, and both short-term and long-term rehabilitation with on-site medical supervision, and there's support for emotional as well as physical needs.

Now, Glenwood Healthcare Center has had some challenges, and inspection reports show 27 deficiencies, including six related to infection control, and there've been federal violations about infection protection, which is something families might want to ask about. The facility received a resident rights deficiency for not always providing a completely safe, clean, and homelike environment and another for not completing care plans within 7 days of assessment, which shows there's still room for improvement, even though the place works to meet resident needs. Glenwood Healthcare Center is close to hospitals, doctors, and other Princeton attractions. Residents have access to state-of-the-art amenities, and there seems to be a real effort to make the environment supportive and community-oriented while giving people different living and care options depending on what's needed at their stage of life.
