    Caring home like memory care

I moved my mom here two years ago and have been very pleased. The staff and management (Dawn and team) are caring, responsive, and treat residents like family. It feels home-like - warm decor, great home-cooked meals, dog-friendly, engaging activities, and attentive 24/7 care. Communication is consistent and the team often goes above and beyond; I'd recommend this welcoming memory care to other families.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression Our House Senior Living - Portage Assisted Care is frequently described by families as a small, home-like memory-care community with a strong emphasis on compassionate, personalized attention. Many accounts highlight the staff’s warmth and hands-on approach, management visibility, and an environment that encourages family involvement. The facility’s size and décor contribute to a residential atmosphere that some families equate with increased familiarity and relationship-building among staff and residents.

Care and staff Reviewers consistently emphasize caring, attentive caregivers and teamwork. Families describe staff who are responsive to daily needs, accommodating with diet or hydration, and willing to support transitions between care levels. Several comments cite specific leadership figures as approachable and engaged; that visible leadership appears to reinforce consistency in day-to-day care. The overall tone from most families is that clinical needs are monitored and that staff make efforts to know residents personally.

Dining and nutrition Food quality is a mixed area. Many reviewers praise homemade meals and enjoyable aromas and flavors, with several noting improved eating and hydration among residents after admission. However, there are also mentions of inconsistent meal quality at times, suggesting variability across shifts or periods. The facility appears willing to accommodate dietary needs when identified.

Activities and social programming The community offers social events such as crafts, spa days, music performances, holiday celebrations, and weekly lunch outings. These events contribute to a family-like atmosphere and are appreciated by many residents. At the same time, some families express that activity offerings may lack cognitive challenge or variety for certain residents, indicating that structured, stimulating programming could be expanded for those who need it.

Facilities and environment The physical environment is described as clean, attractively decorated, and comfortable, with accessible common areas and outdoor space. The small scale is generally viewed positively for relationship-building and individualized attention. Noted drawbacks include the facility’s location on a busy corridor and a smaller overall capacity, which can create waitlists or limit placement availability.

Safety, sanitation, and regulatory matters A serious and recurring concern in the reviews involves pest-control issues that prompted health- and social-services involvement in at least one account. That matter stands apart from day-to-day praise and should be treated as a significant operational issue until resolved. Families should confirm the current status of any pest-control or regulatory actions during a tour.

Management and communication Leadership presence is often viewed positively, with many families grateful for active managers and marketing staff who facilitate tours and admissions. Contrastingly, some comments identify lapses in family communication—missed callbacks, insufficient advance notice of care changes, and occasional concerns about administrative transparency. These point to an operational gap in consistent, proactive family engagement and information flow.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective families The dominant pattern is one of a caring, small-scale memory-care community where staff engagement and a home-like atmosphere are strengths. Areas to investigate during a visit include the current status of any pest-control or regulatory matters, the facility’s activity schedule for cognitive stimulation, consistency of meal quality across shifts, and typical communication protocols with families. Prospective residents and families who prioritize personalized attention, visible leadership, and a family-oriented culture are likely to view this community favorably, provided the operational concerns above are adequately addressed.
