    Beautiful campus safe care expensive

I moved my mom into this senior living community and was impressed by the beautiful, resort-like campus, restaurant-style dining, many activities, and multiple levels of care including memory care. Staff were generally professional, friendly and helpful - move-in was smooth and therapists/doctors are available on site. Downsides: it's expensive, staff quality and communication can be inconsistent, and we've noticed occasional housekeeping and care lapses. Overall my mom is engaged and safe; I'd recommend touring but ask detailed questions about staffing, costs, and care plans.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is broadly positive about Somerby Mobile as a clean, attractive, and socially active senior living community, with repeatedly praised staff and many campus amenities. Most reviewers highlight the resort-like grounds, gated campus, and plentiful shared spaces — pools, exercise rooms, billiards, theater, library, walking trails and a large clubhouse — as major strengths. Many residents report a vibrant social life with frequent events, classes, outings (including concerts, symphony trips, and shopping), and strongly appreciate transportation services. Several reviewers note significant improvements in quality of life after moving in, including better sleep, weight changes from healthier dining, and renewed social engagement. The presence of multiple levels of care on one campus (independent living, assisted living, memory care) and on-site therapy services were repeatedly seen as important conveniences.

Staff and customer-facing personnel receive consistently high marks from numerous reviewers. Descriptions such as "friendly," "caring," "personable," and "staff who know residents by name" appear often; specific staff and leaders (tour guides and move-in helpers) were called out by name for exemplary service. Many reviews describe the staff as going above and beyond: organizing events, being attentive in daily living tasks, and providing effective move-in support. Housekeeping and dining room staff and concierges were frequently mentioned as helpful. Several long-term residents and families praised visible management, a strong Resident Services Director, and an overall sense that employees take pride in the community.

Dining and food are a mixed but prominent theme. Many reviewers praise upscale, restaurant-style dining with linen and silverware, leather-bound menus, the ability to order from the menu, and memorable meals (grilled salmon, Thanksgiving dinners, popcorn in theater). At the same time, there are recurring complaints about inconsistent food quality: cold meals, salty soups, burnt bacon, and a few comments labeling the food as mediocre or that there is "no real chef." Dining preferences vary by reviewer — some love the options and variety, others miss more protein or home-style cooking. Meal service issues extend in a few reviews to timing problems and occasional service shortcomings.

The activity program is generally a strength but shows notable variation in resident experience. Many residents report a full calendar — exercise classes (water aerobics, chair volleyball), arts and crafts, music therapy, wine socials, large band events, trips and lectures — and say they rarely have trouble finding opportunities to engage. Conversely, some reviewers feel the programming can be repetitive, overly focused on certain types of entertainment (parlor/gambling games), or too regimented for personal preference. COVID-related interruptions to outings were noted but later eased, though a few reviews expressed concern that future cutbacks to trips may occur due to operational changes.

Care quality and safety produce the strongest and most serious split in opinions. Numerous reports praise attentive caregiving in assisted living and memory care, improvements after therapy, and compassionate staff. However, other reviews document important lapses: poor medication management, inconsistent or confusing communication from nurses, failure to check on residents after falls, bruises left unreported, and allegations that promised night checks or round-the-clock monitoring were not consistently provided despite extra billing. These accounts also include mentions of frequent hospitalizations for some residents and concerns about breach of contract (removal of appliances) and safety issues (unlocked doors, lack of supervision). Such incidents suggest variability in clinical and safety practices and have led some families to feel Somerby was not meeting expectations in higher-acuity situations.

Operational and management issues surface in several domains: sales practices, billing, and housekeeping. While many reviewers had positive moving-in experiences and praised sales and support staff, others described high-pressure sales tactics, poor prorated billing practices, abrupt move-out demands (pressure to vacate by midnight), and a perceived lack of transparency on costs for additional care. Cost is a recurring theme — Somerby is frequently labeled "expensive," with specific concerns about affordability for families, high move-in and monthly rates (one reviewer noted about $4,000/month), and expensive add-on care charges. Housekeeping and maintenance receive mixed comments: some residents enjoy weekly cleaning and timely maintenance, while others report skipped cleanings, slow maintenance responses, and inconsistent housekeeping quality.

Patterns and recommendations emerging from the reviews: Somerby Mobile excels as an independent-living environment for socially active seniors who value amenities, dining, and a caring front-line staff. Prospective residents and families should expect a well-appointed campus and many organized activities with strong social opportunities. However, for those with higher or complex medical needs, reviewers recommend careful vetting: ask specific questions about medication administration protocols, fall prevention and post-fall procedures, staffing ratios at night, and what constitutes billed "round-the-clock" care. Clarify billing policies, prorations, and any restrictions or changes to amenities (e.g., pool usage) before signing. During tours, probe about past complaints (housekeeping, maintenance speed, communication) and seek recent examples of how management addressed them. Finally, because experiences vary by unit, staff shift, and individual staff members, visiting during different times of day, speaking directly with current residents, and requesting written policies on care escalation, billing, and housekeeping will give a clearer picture tailored to a prospective resident's needs.

In summary, reviews portray Somerby Mobile as a regionally well-regarded, amenity-rich community with many satisfied residents who praise the staff, social life, and campus. Nevertheless, there are significant and repeated concerns around the consistency of clinical care, safety/supervision in higher-acuity situations, housekeeping variability, food consistency, and cost transparency. These mixed signals suggest Somerby is a strong choice for independent seniors looking for an active, upscale environment but that families of residents who require reliable, high-acuity clinical oversight should perform extra diligence and obtain explicit, documented assurances about care practices and charges before committing.

    About Somerby Mobile

Somerby Mobile accepts residents over 55 and provides independent living apartments and villas for those who want to stay active and have a maintenance-free lifestyle, and they also have assisted living with certified staff to help with daily tasks and offer personalized care plans, and if someone needs memory care, they've got the Lilac Trace Memory Care program for people with Alzheimer's or other dementia, using things like reminiscence therapy, sensory-based activities, and light therapy in a secure environment, and they even have short-term and respite care for when a person needs temporary support after surgery or just wants to try out the community for a while, and they work with families to figure out what each person needs with options for daily, weekly, or monthly stays. The place has plenty of community features folks enjoy, like a swimming pool and hot tub, fireplaces in the common areas, walking paths both inside and outside, landscaped gardens, and a fitness center, so there's plenty of ways to keep moving or just sit and relax, and if someone is looking for things to do, there's a full calendar of social, educational, and entertainment activities, plus movie nights in their theater, events, and arts and crafts in their center, and a library where you can sit quietly with a book. Residents can get meals prepared by the chef in a restaurant-style dining room, have special diet plans if needed, get guest meals or even room service, so there isn't too much fuss in the kitchen, and the housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance get taken care of as well. The property offers free resident parking, spaces for guests, and has access to public bus lines, plus transportation is available at cost or sometimes complimentary, which means errands and outings are easy enough to manage, and there are also amenities like a salon, a barbershop, and even a piano or organ for entertainment. The common areas are comfortable, like the atrium, movie room, enclosed courtyard, and the building has both wheelchair accessible showers and full tubs, so they thought a fair bit about mobility and safety, and the staff is on hand 24/7. There are religious services both onsite and offsite, serving multiple faiths with visiting chaplains and rabbis. Residents can get help aging in place, and there's a continuing care approach, with skilled nursing and memory care on the same campus, so people don't have to leave the community as their health needs change. There's no entry fee since it's a rental community, and they do their best to offer resources for families about care planning, lifestyle options, and the costs involved, and the Somerby Spark program is the name they use for trying to add a positive touch to daily life. The apartment homes are nicely designed, and the culture is warm and focused on wellness, so people feel welcome, and while it's an award-winning community with lots of programming, the main thing is they provide a wide range of options to support seniors in whatever stage of life they're in, with individualized attention and a good amount of choices for living comfortably.
