    Clean, bright, caring, cozy community

I moved my mom here and we couldn't be happier - the place is clean, bright and homey with a single-floor, circular layout that's easy to navigate. The staff are kind, attentive and genuinely caring; meals are good (mostly excellent), there are daily activities, outings and on-site services like hair care and a geriatric doctor, and the van makes appointments easy. Residents seem safe, engaged and well looked-after, and the director and caregivers communicate well so our family has real peace of mind. Small caveat: it's a small, cozy community that may not fit advanced memory-care needs and meals/cleaning have occasional lapses, but overall I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Masonicare at Middlewoods of Newington are predominantly positive, with many families and residents emphasizing caring staff, a warm home-like atmosphere, active programming, and generally clean, well-maintained facilities. The facility is repeatedly characterized as small, family-oriented, and easy to navigate (single-floor/circular layout), which many reviewers find comforting. Staff—from caregivers to management and activities personnel—are commonly described as friendly, attentive, and willing to go the extra mile. Numerous families explicitly state peace of mind and recommend the community for those needing assisted living.

Care quality and staff: The strongest theme across reviews is the quality and compassion of the staff. Multiple reviewers reported personable, respectful caregivers and an engaged executive director and activities director. Staff responsiveness, weekly updates, helpful communication, and collaboration with in-home care providers are cited as positives. Specific staff members (for example, Laura the activities director) are singled out for exceptional work. Staff are praised for resident-first attitudes, dignified and compassionate care, and for maintaining safety and communication during the pandemic. That said, a smaller but important set of reviews highlights inconsistency: some families reported inadequate housekeeping or admissions interactions that felt dismissive. There are also specific concerns about insufficient staffing for residents with higher-acuity needs, particularly memory care, with at least one account of an admission being declined because the facility could not safely meet needs.

Facilities and layout: Many reviewers appreciate the small, home-like scale of the building, noting bright common areas, a large sitting/visiting area, and comfortable apartments (studio to larger units). The single-floor and circular atrium design is described as convenient for residents and families. Cleanliness is frequently praised—fresh smells, sanitized common spaces, and attention to maintenance were mentioned. However, there is notable variability reported: while many describe weekly apartment cleaning and laundry as included and performed, a few reviewers reported that weekly cleaning was not carried out, leaving rooms messy with soiled clothing and food residue. A few reviewers also noted that some apartments are small or darker with minimal windows.

Dining and food service: Dining is generally a strong point. Many reviewers compliment the meals, the executive chef’s accommodations for dietary needs, and attentive dining room staff. Some families appreciated meals delivered to rooms for safety when appropriate. Occasional negatives appear here too: a handful of reviewers said meals were sometimes not hot or not as fresh as expected, and some noted that staff interaction in the dining room could be limited depending on timing and staffing.

Activities and social programming: Activity programming is consistently highlighted as a positive differentiator. Reviews reference a wide range of offerings—Wii bowling and inter-community competitions, live weekly entertainment, exercise classes, cooking classes, bingo, scenic drives, regular shopping trips, church services, holiday events (e.g., Mother’s Day tea), and creative programming that helps residents stay engaged mentally and socially. Reviewers also value that staff facilitate family contact (Zoom visits) and that there is “something for every level of care” in terms of activities. Overall, programming is seen as enriching residents’ lives and providing meaningful engagement daily.

Medical services, safety, and pandemic response: The availability of on-site geriatric medical services and psychiatric care is a recurring plus, along with responsive maintenance and a safe environment. Many reviewers expressly stated they felt the community was well-managed through the pandemic, with compliance to regulations and family visitation permitted when appropriate. Hospice care and compassionate end-of-life support are also noted positively.

Management, communication, and variability: Several reviewers praise the administration for being hands-on, communicative, and family-friendly, citing frequent updates, newsletters, and accessibility. This contributes to families’ trust. Nevertheless, there is a pattern of variability in experience—some families describe exemplary, consistent service, while a minority recount significant lapses (notably failing to perform weekly cleaning, or encounters with staff perceived as unfriendly during admissions). These inconsistent reports suggest service quality may vary by unit, staffing at particular times, or since the height of COVID-related disruptions.

Notable concerns and fit considerations: The most serious concerns from reviews center on housekeeping lapses (including reports of rooms left dirty) and staffing limitations for residents with more advanced or specialized care needs (particularly Alzheimer's/dementia). A few families explicitly recommended alternative communities for long-term memory care. Admission denials due to staffing constraints and at least one report of the facility acting as if they “knew mom better” than the family during intake indicate that prospective residents and families should verify current staffing levels and the facility’s ability to meet specific care needs before committing.

Conclusion and guidance: In sum, Masonicare at Middlewoods of Newington is described by many reviewers as a warm, small, well-run assisted living community with compassionate staff, a strong activities program, convenient layout, and generally good dining and medical supports. These strengths make it a compelling choice for seniors who benefit from social engagement and a home-like environment. However, there are notable areas of variability—housekeeping consistency, occasional meal temperature/quality issues, room size/light concerns, and capacity for higher-acuity memory care. Prospective residents and families should tour the facility, meet care staff and management, ask about current housekeeping and maintenance practices, verify staff-to-resident ratios and memory-care capabilities, and sample a meal to ensure it meets expectations. Doing so will help determine whether Middlewoods is the right fit for a given level of need and personal preferences.
