    Friendly staff and beautiful campus

I'm very happy here - staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable; apartments are roomy, clean and modern; and the grounds are beautiful with trails and water features. Dining is restaurant-style and consistently good, and the campus has abundant amenities and activities (gym, pool, library, salon, shops, trips and transportation). A few caveats: memory care seemed understaffed at times, I've heard occasional staff/management issues, and private-pay costs can be high. Overall, comfortable, well kept, and highly livable.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is strongly positive, with repeated praise for the cleanliness, modern finishes, and spaciousness of the campus living spaces. Reviewers consistently describe apartments and villas as roomy, updated, and well-appointed — many noting in-unit laundry, ample closets, handicap-accessible features, and even private garages for freestanding cottages. The facility is described as hotel-like in presentation and upkeep, with continual cleaning, renovated dining areas, and attractive grounds that include walking trails, water features, and scenic views.

Dining and food service are frequent highlights. Multiple accounts call out restaurant-style dining with two entree choices, high-quality meals, nicely set dining rooms (linens, fresh flowers), and social dining opportunities. People mention good lunches, regular themed food events (ice cream sundae days, floatie days), and a cafeteria/restaurant option on campus. Meal plans that cover utilities and scheduled housekeeping are referenced as convenience and value-adds. The availability of an AV mall, salon, bank, small grocery, theater/auditorium, gym, swimming pool, and other on-site services further reinforce the impression of a full-service, self-contained campus.

Activities and community life are major strengths. Reviews list an extensive and diverse activity schedule — exercise classes, bingo (often multiple times weekly), live music, trivia, choral groups, art and cooking classes, movie nights, happy hours, card games, billiards, hiking, and organized trips. Transportation services for appointments and outings are available and often used. Many reviewers emphasize a warm, welcoming culture with strong resident-to-resident connections, volunteering opportunities, and regular entertainment, which contributes to reported increases in resident happiness and social engagement.

Care quality and medical services receive generally favorable comments, with multiple reviewers praising knowledgeable nurses, attentive aides, and 24/7 caregiver coverage. The presence of on-site healthcare (including hospice and memory-care options) is seen as a significant convenience and safety factor for residents who may need escalating care. That said, there are important caveats: several reviews cite understaffing in the memory-care unit and specific medication-management problems. While many reviewers say medications and health needs are handled well, the cited lapses and staffing concerns in specialized care areas are notable and should be weighed carefully by prospective residents and families.

Staff performance is described with two distinct patterns. On the positive side, many reviews emphasize wonderful, friendly, helpful, and energetic staff across dining, nursing, maintenance, and administration — staff who are responsive, polite, and effective at resolving problems. On the negative side, a number of reviews recount incidents of rude, disrespectful, or unprofessional behavior by individual staff members or CNAs, with some reviewers requesting management changes or further CNA training. There are also isolated allegations of dishonesty and privacy concerns such as unsolicited flyers and perceived invasions of privacy. This variability suggests that while overall staffing quality is high, inconsistency in individual staff interactions and occasional lapses in service or communication do occur.

Management and operations are generally viewed as organized and proactive, with reviewers noting prompt problem-solving, ongoing maintenance, storm cleanup, and a sense of safety from 24/7 security. Several reviewers explicitly praise the administration for being responsive. Conversely, some families express dissatisfaction with management handling of personnel issues or communications, and a few call for stronger oversight and training. Cost perspectives are mixed: several people describe the pricing as fair or comparable to similar communities, while others find private-pay options expensive.

In summary, Masonicare at Ashlar Village is depicted as a well-maintained, full-service senior living campus that excels at amenities, dining, activities, and producing an active social environment. Clinical and caregiving services are generally solid, especially with on-site healthcare and hospice options, though concerns about memory-care staffing and medication management appear repeatedly enough to warrant attention. The largest recurring caution is variability in staff behavior and occasional administrative shortcomings reported by reviewers. Prospective residents and families will likely find the campus attractive for independent and continuing-care needs, but should interview staff, ask specifically about memory-care staffing ratios and medication protocols, and seek references to better understand how the management addresses personnel issues and ensures consistent quality of care.

    About Masonicare At Ashlar Village

Masonicare at Ashlar Village sits at 74 Cheshire Road in Wallingford, Connecticut, within ZIP code 06492, right in a quiet area with easy access for seniors and their families, and you'll see it's a large place, serving close to 5,000 people across Connecticut as part of the bigger Masonicare network, which has been around for decades, having first been accredited way back in 1989, so there's a lot of experience built into how folks are treated there. The community offers different kinds of homes and rentals, from condos and apartments to townhomes and single-family houses, and there's a focus on making things easy for those with disabilities, with wheelchair ramps, accessible showers, entrance-level apartments, and elevators, because getting where you need to go shouldn't be a hassle. The rental units tend to have things people want, like washers and dryers, air conditioning, sometimes water views, and some even let family bring visiting pets, within reason, as long as they're small animals like cats.

Ashlar Village takes care of a range of needs, since there are services for folks who want independent living in a safe and social place, as well as more supportive options like assisted living, specialized dementia care, and skilled nursing, so people can move between those as their care needs change, which makes it a Continuing Care Retirement Community or CCRC, and that means you don't have to worry as much about where you'll live if you need extra help later on. There's a secure memory care unit, short-term rehab for people coming out of the hospital, and even respite care for folks just needing a break or a stay for a couple of weeks, plus adult day programs and in-home companion services for those who want to try things out or need help without moving right away.

You'll find a lot of everyday support, such as housekeeping, laundry (staff can do it or you can do it yourself), transportation to doctors or shopping, regular activities, and nutritious meals in the dining rooms, with staff known for being friendly and taking time with residents. Rooms include furnished apartments and private rooms, and there's guest parking for when friends or family come by, plus both indoor and outdoor gathering spots - some with barbecue areas, patios, and even waterfront views, since getting outside does people good. Safety matters, too, so there are medical alert devices, WanderGuard technology for folks who might get confused, and a team covering everything from medication help and diabetic care to programs for folks with higher needs, even hospice and behavioral health, since it all falls under their mission to look after mind, body, and spirit.

They keep a steady set of age restrictions and pet-friendly policies, mostly for cats, and make efforts to make the buildings and website accessible to everyone, regardless of disabilities. There are specific programs to protect residents' rights against housing and job discrimination, especially for LGBTQ persons, which you won't see everywhere. Amenities and care services cover the basics and the extras, but don't expect every luxury under the sun - what folks mention most is a feeling of kindness from the staff, help with daily activities like dressing and bathing, regular social programs, and clear information about what to expect if needs change.

The community houses 134 units, so it's not too small or too overwhelming, allowing for a bit of a neighborhood feeling, and the staff are usually described as helpful, which makes adjusting a little less worrisome. Masonicare at Ashlar Village brings different types of care all in one place, with a long tradition of senior services, accessible housing, and a commitment to health and daily wellbeing.
