    Beautiful grounds, negligent nursing care

I loved the beautiful, immaculately kept grounds, well-laid-out apartments, great amenities (pool, fitness, dining, activities) and generally friendly staff and good food. But the nursing-home side was a disgrace in my experience - residents went days without bathing or checks, staff brought COVID in, and my mother contracted COVID and died without family present after my compassionate-visit requests went unanswered. Beautiful for independent living, but I would look elsewhere if you need safe, reliable skilled-nursing care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed-to-positive with a strong emphasis on the facility’s physical appeal and many on-site amenities, tempered by a small number of very serious care and communication complaints that prospective residents and families should investigate carefully. Many reviewers praise The Oaks of Louisiana as a modern, attractive community: multiple comments highlight brand-new construction, a gorgeous front entrance, immaculate buildings, efficient centralized layouts, and well-kept grounds with walking trails, lakes and outdoor recreation. Residents and family members frequently note that apartments are clean and comfortable, the dining areas are pleasant, and there is a family room for gatherings. The campus offers a wide range of amenities — heated pool, fitness center, library, putting green, and frequent outings (shopping and symphony) — as well as transportation for medical appointments. An RN on staff 24/7 and consistently complimentary remarks about friendly, helpful staff are also recurring positives.

Dining and activities receive generally favorable remarks: reviewers report good food, included meal options (with pay-per-meal flexibility), and a variety of daytime activities such as cards and games. The community’s layout is often praised for short walking distances and efficient use of space in garden apartments. Several reviewers said the place represented good value for the cost, citing attention to detail and courteous service. For families looking for event space, there are onsite rooms suitable for birthdays and family gatherings.

However, the reviews also raise notable concerns that should not be overlooked. The most serious complaints center on infection control and care quality during COVID: one reviewer accuses staff of bringing COVID into the facility, reports strict lockdown policies preventing family visits, and describes a failure of communication (no callback after requesting a compassionate visit) resulting in a family member dying without loved ones present. Separate, disturbing complaints describe the nursing home area as “a disgrace,” alleging residents were not bathed for many days and experienced infrequent checks. These are very significant red flags about clinical oversight, staffing levels, and crisis communication. Prospective residents should ask specifically about infection-control policies, staffing ratios, staff turnover, and supervision of the skilled nursing wing.

Other operational and accessibility issues appear in multiple reviews: some apartment types (notably detached cottages) are older, more isolated from the main community, or require driving to reach dining and activities, which undermines the ‘all-in-one’ lifestyle some seek. Apartment sizes vary and some units are described as small. A few reviewers also reported unprofessional behavior from telephone staff and occasional negative interactions, which suggests inconsistency in front-line customer service. Less severe but practical concerns include cost (several reviewers called the community expensive), limited vegetation in certain areas (noted because the site was formerly farmland), and one comment raising a safety concern about lawn-service chemicals — a detail families may want clarified.

In summary, The Oaks of Louisiana presents as a mostly well-appointed, attractive retirement community with a broad amenity set, friendly on-the-ground staff, and generally positive dining and activities. At the same time, there are isolated but very serious allegations related to infection handling, end-of-life visitation and nursing-home care that introduce substantial risk for families prioritizing clinical reliability and compassionate communication. If you are considering The Oaks, prioritize an in-person tour that inspects both independent/assisted living and the skilled nursing wing, ask for current staffing levels and RN coverage details, request written COVID and infection-control policies and recent inspection reports, confirm how dining and activities are accessed from the specific apartment type you’d choose, and check references from current residents and families. These steps will help you weigh the many appealing features against the significant concerns raised in some reviews.
