    Beautiful but costly, unsafe, untrustworthy

    I was struck by the gorgeous, immaculately kept campus - lots of windows, chef-quality dining, pools, gym and nonstop activities that give a cruise-ship, carefree vibe. Staff were often friendly and helpful, and independent living felt well-appointed and social. But I also encountered serious red flags: very high buy-in/monthly fees, small units, long walks/elevators far apart, hidden charges and deposit/refund problems that felt shady. More worrying were reports I saw and experienced of theft/financial mismanagement, rude or tone-deaf administration, understaffing, and privacy/safety concerns in memory care. Beautiful facilities and great activities, but I left distrustful and would be extremely cautious about moving a loved one in without ironclad protections.
