    Thoughtful caregivers, clean facility, homey

I placed my mother at Foxden and we couldn't be happier. The caregivers are thoughtful and compassionate, rooms and facility are very clean, the food is tasty, and there are abundant activities, van trips and a lovely garden/pond view that make it feel like home. Staff and administration are responsive, laundry and maintenance go above and beyond, and the all-inclusive pricing worked for us. Not for advanced memory care, but for assisted/independent living it's a warm, attentive community I highly recommend.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with frequent praise for the pastoral setting, familial atmosphere, and the quality of personal care. Many reviewers emphasize the attractive, serene grounds — often mentioning the pond, fountain, front porch, gardens and wildlife — and describe a cozy, home-like environment that contributes to residents' enjoyment and wellbeing. Reviewers repeatedly note that residents appear happy and engaged, and family members report peace of mind knowing their loved ones are well cared for.

Staff quality is a consistently prominent theme. Reviews highlight friendly, compassionate, and attentive employees at all levels — from caregivers and dining staff to maintenance and administrative personnel. Several staff members are singled out by name for exemplary service (for example, Arsenia, Paula, and Dee), and comments describe staff who go above and beyond, respond quickly to issues, and foster a strong sense of community. Long-tenured staff and a family-like culture are credited with creating stability and continuity of care. Housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance are repeatedly praised for efficiency and thoroughness.

Care quality and services are described positively: residents receive ADL (activities of daily living) assistance when needed, individualized attention, and dignity is maintained. Multiple reviewers mention that the community provides peace of mind and improves quality of life, with staff making efforts to keep residents engaged and active. That engagement is supported by a robust activities program — reviewers list bingo, live music, arts and crafts, shopping trips, van outings, and other day trips — and an activities director who plans varied daily programs. The availability of transportation for outings is noted as a valued inclusion in many reviews.

Facilities and accommodations receive mixed but generally favorable comments. Many residents live in private apartments or suites with a range of layouts (some with kitchens), and reviewers describe bright, clean units and pleasant common areas. Maintenance and renovation efforts are ongoing, and when completed these updates are viewed positively. However, there are recurring notes that some interiors are dated and some private/efficiency rooms are small, which could matter for prospective residents seeking larger or more modern units.

Dining is often praised — reviewers report delicious meals, appealing aromas, and a receptive kitchen staff that will accommodate requests — though a few mention inconsistent food quality. A specific dietary gap surfaced in the reviews: some residents with diabetes reported that there is no formal diabetic diet provided. Cost and coverage concerns appear for a minority of reviewers: while several describe the community's pricing as affordable or all-inclusive (including bus rides), others describe rent as expensive and note limited Medicare coverage. Prospective residents should confirm current pricing and insurance/Medicare policies directly with management.

Limitations and notable concerns are clear in certain areas: Foxden is repeatedly described as not appropriate for advanced medical or memory-care needs — there is no dedicated memory-care program — so it best serves residents who require assistance with daily activities but not intensive medical supervision. Renovations are ongoing which may be disruptive to some, and the mix of comments on food and unit size suggests some variability between apartments and dining experiences. Finally, while the presence of owners and on-site administration is a benefit for many reviewers, prospective residents should verify any unit-specific details (size, layout, accessibility) and clinical capabilities prior to moving in.

In summary, the reviews portray Foxden Retirement Community as a small, welcoming, and well-run residence with strong staff engagement, plentiful activities, attractive grounds, and generally high satisfaction among residents and families. Its strengths are its caring staff, home-like environment, active programming, and attentive facilities services. Its primary limitations are a lack of advanced or memory-care services, some variability in unit size and dining consistency, occasional renovation-related impacts, and potential issues around cost and Medicare coverage — factors to confirm case-by-case during a tour or intake conversation.

    About Foxden Retirement Community

Foxden Retirement Community sits in Sandown, NH, and feels much like a large family home where folks help each other and know each other's stories, and that's probably because it's still small, with 32 beds split between 20 private rooms-with bay windows, private sinks, and semi-private bathrooms with showers-and 12 efficiency apartments that each have a kitchenette with a refrigerator, a stove, and a bay window looking outside, so residents who've always liked a bit of independence find it easy to settle in. Foxden focuses on seniors usually aged 55 and up, with special care plans for those who need a hand with daily things like getting dressed, bathing, or managing medications, and you'll find staff around all day and night, always ready to step in if someone needs help, which makes families breathe easy.

There's a laid back dining room where residents get three home-cooked meals every day-nutritious food that uses real, quality ingredients-and folks really enjoy sitting around the big family-style tables, sometimes with the piano playing in the background. The activity room sees plenty of use with planned daily activities, movies, and exercise programs. The staff run music therapy, animal therapy, and activities that keep hands and minds busy, and there's a Senior Living Counselor on site for support and advice. In addition to regular care and supervision, Foxden provides memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, as well as respite and hospice care for those who need it, always following careful care plans based on senior care standards. For people who prefer a more independent lifestyle but like having people around, Foxden has independent living options with condo- or apartment-style setups, and there's even home care services for seniors who still live at home but like someone stopping by for companionship or light help.

Amenities include a library that's nice for reading or a quiet chat, a large living room with comfortable seats and a TV, and gardens where people relax or visit with family. There's laundry and housekeeping, regular on-site healthcare, and special diets for things like diabetes or high blood pressure. Residents can get to doctor appointments, shopping or church with the Fox Den bus, and there's parking for those who drive. Transportation is a big help, especially to scheduled events or just out to eat now and then. There are social events, community nights, movie entertainment, recreation rooms, and maybe even a jacuzzi or sauna for some relaxation, plus a salon service or a mobile hairdresser, which a lot of folks appreciate. Staff help with anything from bathing and dressing to medication reminders, and they've got a reputation for being kind, patient, and happy to stop for a chat.

Foxden uses a profile management system to keep track of each resident's needs and offers options for people to update their information, so care stays current and personal. There's always a detailed map of the community so residents and their guests can find their way around. Pricing for different room types is published, with some amenities included in the rent and other services like extra laundry or special outings available for a bit more. Foxden has won several awards for quality care, including Best of Senior Living and All Star awards, and many seniors say the atmosphere's warm and welcoming, kind of like living with extended family.
