    Beautiful campus, pricey, questionable care

I moved in and found a beautiful, safe 40-acre campus with lovely apartments, well-maintained grounds, abundant amenities (pool, gym, library, theater, garden, café), frequent events/trips, on-site doctors/nurses and 24/7 security. Staff and neighbors have mostly been warm, helpful, and the move-in/admin process was smooth; dining ranges from casual café to fine-dining and activities keep you busy. That said, upfront buy-ins and fees are steep, management can be cold and nickel-and-dime billing (even post-death) has been reported, and there are disturbing accounts of poor clinical response/neglect and coercive tactics for some residents. Overall great for active seniors who can afford it, but scrutinize contracts and care reliability if intensive medical support is needed.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed but leans positive on experiential and clinical aspects while raising recurring concerns about management practices and a few serious care incidents. A large share of reviewers praise the Evergreens for its caring front-line staff, smooth move-in experience, and strong on-site medical support. Multiple accounts highlight full-time geriatric/gerontologist availability, round-the-clock nursing, and on-site primary care and therapy services as major strengths. Many residents and family members express relief and peace of mind from the security and 24/7 assistance the campus provides.

Staff and care quality are among the most frequently mentioned themes. Numerous reviews describe staff as warm, patient, compassionate, and very involved with residents, creating a family-like atmosphere. Sales and move-in teams are repeatedly commended for being helpful and making transitions seamless. Clinically, the presence of an on-site geriatric physician, regular RNs, and available medical professionals contributes to confidence in everyday health needs and chronic-care management. However, these positive reports are contradicted by several serious negative accounts. A minority of reviewers allege neglectful behavior, long emergency response times, and unprofessional conduct by specific clinical or wellness staff members. At least one review details a delayed nursing response during a crisis and harsh behavior toward a dying patient’s family. These extreme negative reports raise important questions about consistency in clinical responsiveness and staff conduct under stress.

Facilities and apartments receive strong positive marks. Reviewers frequently describe the 40-acre campus as beautiful and well maintained, with tidy, well-laid-out apartments and a range of floor plans. Common-area amenities are extensive and include a theater, pool, fitness areas, game rooms, a library, a chapel, and on-site maintenance services. Pet-friendly policies and a variety of living arrangements add flexibility for prospective residents. Some mention the campus is not as upscale as other communities and that building layouts can be somewhat tricky, but the overall impression of the physical environment is favorable.

Dining and social life are standout positives for many residents. The Evergreens offers multiple dining venues, a rotating selection of entrees and daily specials, a café, and takeout options. Several reviewers praise the food specifically (examples cited include asparagus, salmon, and desserts), while others state the dining was not exceptional. Social programming is robust: reviewers commonly note frequent cultural events, monthly entertainment, live music, weekly happy hours, trips, and specialized groups such as a garden and greenhouse club. For many residents, these activities drive a strong sense of community and keep life engaging. Conversely, a subset of reviews reports social isolation, with residents spending significant time alone in their rooms and describing a lack of meaningful engagement — suggesting that community integration may vary by household or wing.

Management and financial practices are the most polarizing themes. Several reviewers applaud the sales staff and an efficient, reassuring admissions process, but a substantial number raise serious financial and administrative concerns. Criticisms include high upfront buy-in or holding fees, ongoing annual fee increases (reported in the 4–6% range), perceived nickel-and-dime charging, and troubling reports of billing after a resident's death. Some reviewers describe coercive tactics or threats related to resident placement (including threats of transfer to nursing care), and a few portray management as cold or money-driven. These recurrent financial complaints create significant distrust among some families and contrast starkly with accounts praising transparency and value.

Patterns and practical takeaways: Most reviewers celebrate the Evergreens for its compassionate day-to-day caregiving, breadth of amenities, active social programming, and the reassurance provided by on-site medical staff. Nonetheless, there are repeated and serious allegations concerning inconsistent care in critical situations and aggressive or opaque financial practices from management. Prospective residents and families should weigh the community's strong clinical and lifestyle offerings against reports of financial friction and at least a few acute care failures. When evaluating the Evergreens in person, important due diligence items include asking for specifics about emergency response protocols, staff training and accountability, detailed explanations of all fees and post-death billing policies, documented history of fee increases, and opportunities to observe resident-staff interactions and typical activity participation. These steps can help clarify whether the community's generally positive daily experience will be consistent and whether administrative policies will meet a family's expectations and protections.

    About The Evergreens

The Evergreens sits in Moorestown and has a variety of living options for older adults, so people can choose independent living, assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing care, depending on what they need now or in the future, and the place does have residential apartments for those who don't need any help, plus assisted living suites for folks who need some support with daily tasks, and they also have skilled care beds when someone requires more complex attention. The caregiving staff are known for being welcoming, responsive, attentive, and compassionate, and there's a strong focus on making sure residents feel comfortable and cared for. The whole community is structured as a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), which means people can move between different levels of care without having to move out, and the contract structure is meant to help with the transition through those stages, though there is mention of an entrance fee, but exact details about that aren't all spelled out.

The Evergreens has special health services like adult day care centers, personal care homes, and rehabilitation therapy, so folks can stay active and healthy if they wish, while there's also respite care for short-term help. The community has a Medicare 5-star rating, which is rare in New Jersey, with only one other like it, and that rating covers the skilled care beds, which is a sign of quality for those parts of the campus. Amenities are built for safety and comfort, from rooms with emergency call systems to spaces made for easy mobility, and the retirement setting offers things geared toward a gracious, low-stress kind of life. Memory care is an important part of what's available, so people living with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia can get care in dedicated units with staff ready to help with those unique needs, and those memory care units have their own specific names and programs.

There's a wide range of activities and social spaces to keep residents engaged, and the goal is for people to feel at home whether they're mostly independent or need a lot of help. They offer personalized support with activities of daily living and skilled nursing for those who require a higher level of care. Seniors over 55 who are still independent but want future planning have options here, and the community is set up so residents can get more help when their care needs change.
