    Spacious unit but unsafe, mismanaged

I like the spacious one-bedroom, on-site grocery/laundry and the location near synagogue, healthcare and shopping, and some staff show genuine kindness. But management is rude, money-driven and dismissive, the place has a security-first, intimidating atmosphere with locked doors, and I've experienced threats/intimidation. Serious maintenance and sanitation problems (bug infestations, flooding, icy lots, slow elevator/extermination response) make it suitable only for very healthy seniors who can tolerate poor management.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews for Ohau Sholom Apartments are strongly mixed, showing a sharp divide between residents who are "extremely happy" and those who report serious management, safety, and sanitation problems. Many reviewers praise the location, physical unit size, on-site conveniences, and certain staff competencies; however, a significant and recurring set of complaints centers on management behavior, pest problems, building maintenance failures, and an unwelcoming or intimidating atmosphere. The sentiment is polarized: for relatively healthy, independent seniors who prioritize location and amenities, the community can be a very good fit, but for residents who require responsive management, a compassionate culture, or a high standard of building upkeep, there are repeated red flags.

Management and staff: The dominant negative theme concerns management style and stability. Multiple reviews describe management as rude, money-driven, and sometimes threatening—specifically mentioning intimidation related to rent, threats of eviction, and a security-like approach (locked reception doors and inaccessible staff). Frequent management turnover is cited, which may contribute to inconsistent policies and resident experiences. At the same time, several reviews say staff are competent and capable; the tension appears to be that technical competence is not always accompanied by friendliness or empathy. Specific names (e.g., a manager identified as Kelly) were noted in complaints about dismissive responses such as "I'll think about it," contributing to perceptions that concerns are not taken seriously. Overall, expect a mix of competent operations and poor interpersonal responsiveness depending on which staff you encounter.

Facilities and amenities: Positive consensus exists around the physical amenities. Reviewers cite spacious one-bedroom units, on-site grocery and laundry facilities, transportation access, proximity to synagogue/healthcare/shopping, and amenities like a beauty specialist and fresh baked goods from a known bakery. Some reviewers explicitly call the interior and exterior well maintained and appreciate the independent-living model that allows self-cooking. A remodeled dining area and ongoing renovation work are also mentioned — improvements that some residents value, though others complain about lingering cleanliness and social issues in the dining room.

Cleanliness, pests, and maintenance/safety: This is the most concerning cluster of complaints. Several reviewers report cockroach and bedbug infestations and describe extermination efforts as slow. Reports of dirt and filth in areas (including the renovated dining area) suggest inconsistent housekeeping or post-renovation cleanup. Infrastructure issues include flooding from pipe breaks and reported elevator breakdowns; however, elevator reliability is a point of contradiction—some residents say elevators "always work" while others report breakdowns. Dangerous conditions are also cited, including icy parking lots and a general sense of unsafe or hazardous conditions at times. These issues collectively point to inconsistent building maintenance and pest-control protocols that should be carefully investigated by prospective residents or family members.

Social environment and dining: The social tone is mixed. Some residents praise "priceless kindnesses" and "terrific staff," while others describe a hostile or security-focused environment, phony smiles, gossip, and poor treatment of residents in communal areas. The remodeled dining area drew positive attention as an improvement, but a subset of reviews mentions gossip and filth there, indicating the social and cleanliness experience may vary considerably. Dining highlights include fresh-baked goods and community amenities, but food/dining ambience and staff interactions appear inconsistent across reviewers.

Patterns and recommendations: The reviews show a clear pattern of polarized experiences: the property can offer strong location advantages, convenient on-site services, and well-sized independent living units for seniors who are relatively healthy and value autonomy. Conversely, repeated reports about management intimidation, pest infestations, slow remediation, maintenance failures, and an unfriendly or security-heavy atmosphere are serious concerns that prospective residents should probe further. Recommended actions for prospective residents or family members: ask for records of pest-control treatments and recent inspection reports; meet multiple staff members (including the on-site manager) to gauge responsiveness and tone; inquire about procedures for plumbing/flood events and elevator maintenance; request clarification of pet policies and enforcement practices; and, if possible, speak with current residents about recent management turnover and specific safety incidents (e.g., icy parking lot clearance).

Bottom line: Ohau Sholom Apartments offers tangible advantages—location, unit size, on-site services, and some capable staff—but also presents documented and recurring issues around management behavior, pest control, building maintenance, and safety. For relatively independent seniors prioritizing convenience and amenities, it may be a good option, but anyone who needs attentive, compassionate management or who is sensitive to pests or building-safety risks should investigate carefully and consider alternative communities if these concerns are not satisfactorily addressed.
