    Spotless facility, compassionate staff, concerns

I had a mostly positive experience: the facility is spotless, welcoming, and the staff - nurses, CNAs and therapists - were compassionate, responsive and excellent at rehab; check-in (kiosk) was fast and convenient. That said, I observed troubling lapses: occasional short-staffing, slow call-light/pain-med responses, poor food, and one disturbing incident of an elderly resident being humiliated with weak managerial follow-through. I would recommend this facility for care and rehab but with reservations-confirm staffing levels and ask about policies before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Meadowbrook Healthcare are predominantly positive, with a consistent emphasis on compassionate, professional caregiving and strong rehabilitation services. Many reviewers describe nurses, CNAs, therapists, and ancillary staff as attentive, kind, and willing to go above and beyond; multiple comments call staff "angels," "family-like," or "world-class." Cleanliness and facility upkeep are repeatedly praised — rooms, lounges, and common areas are described as meticulously clean, well-decorated, and welcoming. Rehabilitation and therapy receive especially high marks (physical therapy, subacute care, and documented progress), and several reviewers report quick admissions and immediate bed placement that eased transitions from hospital to facility.

Staffing, care, and communication: A dominant theme is the quality and compassion of frontline caregivers and therapy teams. Reviewers frequently note strong bedside manner, patient-focused care, and clear communication with families. Reception and admissions staff are often called pleasant and efficient; the automated check-in kiosk and facial-recognition system are repeatedly described as improving the visitor experience by speeding entry and helping residents feel less forgotten. Multiple accounts highlight ancillary services that make daily life more comfortable — weekly hairstyling, laundry, jacuzzi bath options, painting and baking activities, and volunteers who support residents and families. Several reviewers explicitly thank administration, doctors, nurses, aides, and volunteers for coordinated care, especially during COVID-19 challenges.

Facility, amenities, and activities: Meadowbrook's physical plant and amenities are a consistent plus across reviews. People appreciate personalized rooms, a home-like atmosphere, decorative common areas, and available therapeutic amenities. Activities programming (painting, baking, social events) and support services (housekeeping, laundry) are repeatedly mentioned as important contributors to resident quality of life. The facility's safety measures, monitored entries, and COVID protocols draw favorable remarks, and the check-in automation is frequently cited as convenient and visitor-friendly.

Negative patterns and concerns: Despite the many positive comments, there are several recurring negative themes that deserve attention. Understaffing is mentioned multiple times and is linked to long call-light response times, delayed pain medication, forgotten meals, and intermittent declines in service level. Food quality and quantity emerged as a specific problem for some families — one reviewer associated poor meals with weight loss and decline. There are also scattered reports of rude or unprofessional behavior by individual employees, although these appear as exceptions amid many positive staff reports.

Serious HR/management and safety allegations: A small but significant subset of reviews reports severe problems related to management and staff conduct. These include allegations that an employee was fired after requesting bereavement leave or being denied time off after a death, accusations of false coworker claims of client abuse without subsequent disciplinary action against accusers, and reports of staff yelling, threats, and degradation toward employees. There are alarming accounts of allegedly humiliating treatment of an elderly resident (a "time-out" at the nurses' station) and other statements characterizing the facility's care as inhumane or abusive. Such allegations are serious outliers but they recur enough to flag as a pattern requiring further inquiry. Related concerns include complaints that management/HR was resistant to staff requests and that some families were advised to move loved ones elsewhere due to these issues.

Other operational issues: Reviewers reported a few isolated operational problems: automated kiosk recognition problems for users with glasses or other recognition failures, occasional errors in sign-in texts or name tags, a dislodged door bar incident, and at least one mention of a dog-related safety worry. There are also mixed comments about mask policies and whether COVID testing was required — some appreciated minimal testing requirements, while others found mask policy information lacking or inconsistent.

Overall assessment and notable takeaways: The majority of reviews portray Meadowbrook Healthcare as a high-quality, clean, and compassionate skilled nursing and rehab facility with strong therapy outcomes and many family-pleasing amenities. Strengths are concentrated in caregiving staff, rehabilitation, facility cleanliness, and visitor-friendly processes. However, recurring operational weaknesses — chiefly short-staffing and meal quality — and a set of serious HR/management and patient-treatment allegations create important caveats. The negative reports are fewer than the positive ones but include high-severity claims (employee termination related to bereavement, alleged staff hostility, and humiliating incidents involving residents) that warrant careful attention from prospective residents and families.

Implications for families and next steps: Based on these reviews, families considering Meadowbrook should weigh the facility's strong clinical and rehabilitative reputation and cleanliness against reported staffing pressures and isolated but serious management and conduct complaints. When evaluating the facility in person, families may want to ask direct questions about current staffing ratios, food and nutrition policies, how the facility handles employee grievances and resident complaints, and what steps are taken to investigate and remediate allegations of mistreatment. Overall, reviews suggest Meadowbrook often delivers excellent, compassionate care and a welcoming environment, but prospective residents and families should probe staffing and HR practices to ensure those strengths are consistently sustained.

    About Meadowbrook Healthcare

Meadowbrook Healthcare sits in Plattsburgh, New York, and has 287 beds for residents who need skilled nursing and rehabilitation, and because the staff includes skilled nurses who work closely with dieticians, specialists, and different therapists, residents get many services like restorative nursing, physical and occupational therapy, oxygen therapy, and speech therapy, and there's a care team that shares information about each person so plans and help can be tailored, and the medical care unit can handle wound care, pain management, diabetes, and skin concerns, which has led to having the lowest rate of skin issues in the three counties of the North Country, and since they offer both short and long-term stays, people come for subacute rehabilitation when they need extra help after a hospital visit, or for longer periods if more extensive care is required, and nutrition advice is provided, with diet plans set to support individual needs, so the team includes highly trained staff, and there's even a CNA-to-LPN Ladder Program for career growth among employees, but what stands out is they treat each resident as an individual and ask families to be involved, and the large, newly renovated building has many amenities, professional landscaping, outdoor patios, and views toward Lake Champlain and the mountains out back, and inside, residents find a state-of-the-art rehabilitative gym, daily activities for fun and wellbeing, and a variety of healthcare services that match what each person needs, so whether someone needs limited assistance or skilled nursing, subacute care, or specialized help for a health condition, Meadowbrook Healthcare offers it in a calm and comfortable setting where the staff aims to do their best and help people maintain their quality of life.
