    Friendly staff, great amenities, pricey

I live here and, overall, I'm very pleased: the staff are friendly, caring and responsive, the healthcare and continuity of care are excellent, and the grounds, dining room and apartments are modern, roomy and very clean. The amenities and activities are outstanding (pool, gym/weight room, movie theater, wood shop, library, snack bar, shops, bingo, bus service) and it's conveniently near a major medical center. It is expensive-big buy-in and high monthly fees-and there are parking, occasional maintenance and safety issues (leaks, an alert/elevator incident, memory wing feels hospital-like, pandemic isolation), but I'd still recommend it as a top-tier option.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive about Jefferson's Ferry as a full-service, well-appointed senior living community, tempered primarily by concerns about cost, occasional maintenance and safety issues, and some areas of care or attention inconsistency. Reviewers repeatedly praise the staff and health-care capabilities, the breadth of amenities, the quality of communal spaces (especially the dining room and grounds), and the overall cleanliness and modern feel of many apartments. However, nearly every positive comment about service and amenities is accompanied by notes that the community is expensive — both in upfront buy-in and ongoing monthly fees — and that some practical issues (parking, availability of cottages, and building maintenance) can diminish residents' experience.

Care and staff: A dominant theme is that the staff are friendly, responsive, and caring. Multiple reviews call out nurses and medical care as very good or incredible, and continuity of care is noted as a highlight. Many reviewers explicitly recommend the facility and describe it as having wonderful, helpful staff and even label it one of the best nursing options. That said, there are counterpoints: a few reviews mention that attention is not always sufficient or that staff performance can be average in certain situations. The memory-care wing draws specific criticism for feeling more institutional or hospital-like, which contrasts with the otherwise homey, modern descriptions of apartments and common areas.

Facilities and activities: Jefferson's Ferry scores highly on amenities and activities. Reviewers list a broad assortment of facilities — wood shop, movie theater, pool, weight room, library, laundry, shops — and a lively calendar of activities including bingo, movies, games, and activity nights. The presence of a bus to the supermarket and on-site stores/snack bar are repeatedly appreciated. Common areas and grounds are described as beautiful, and the apartments are frequently characterized as updated, clean, roomy, and modern. These amenities contribute to an impression of the community as a 'Cadillac' or high-end senior option.

Dining: Dining is another consistently praised area. Multiple reviewers mention a beautiful dining room, fabulous meals, and special offerings such as banquet brunches and an impressive Sunday brunch. The snack bar and on-site store(s) receive positive remarks as well. Dining appears to be a standout feature that contributes to resident satisfaction and the community's social life.

Management, cost, and availability: Cost is the most recurrent negative. Reviews commonly describe the community as expensive, with a high buy-in and substantial monthly maintenance fees. Several reviewers emphasize perceived overpricing and note that monthly fees have increased. Limited cottage availability is mentioned as a practical constraint for those seeking that option. The urban location brings proximity to medical centers (a positive) but also parking challenges (a negative). A number of reviewers explicitly characterize Jefferson's Ferry as a premium option — excellent if you can afford it — but warn prospective residents to be prepared for significant costs and to get clear answers about fee escalations and what is included.

Safety and building-quality concerns: While many reviewers praise cleanliness and upkeep, there are specific, serious concerns about building quality and safety. Reports of leaks, an apartment move due to issues, and comments that portions of the building were not well made appear alongside troubling safety incidents: an emergency alert button failure and an elevator door accident are explicitly mentioned. These incidents raise questions about maintenance protocols, emergency response reliability, and oversight. Prospective residents should investigate how such events were handled, what corrective measures were taken, and the current status of safety systems.

Overall recommendation and considerations: Jefferson's Ferry appears to be a high-quality, amenity-rich senior living community with strong clinical capabilities and a friendly staff culture, making it an attractive choice for those who prioritize healthcare access, social programming, and dining. However, the facility is consistently described as costly, and reviewers document real concerns about periodic lapses in attention, building maintenance, safety incidents, pandemic isolation impacts, and limited cottage availability. Prospective residents and families should weigh the community's strong positives against the financial commitment and ask direct questions about: recent fee increase history and expected future increases; specifics of memory-care environment and how it differs from the main campus; maintenance and safety records and what improvements have been made after reported incidents; parking options; cottage availability and waitlists; and how the community handled pandemic isolation and what social/visitation policies are now. For people who can afford the buy-in and monthly fees and who value robust amenities and medical proximity, Jefferson's Ferry often represents an excellent option; for those with tighter budgets or who are especially concerned about institutional memory-care settings or past safety incidents, careful due diligence is advised.

    About Jefferson's Ferry

Jefferson's Ferry sits on 50 acres in South Setauket, New York, and has served seniors since 2001 as a not-for-profit community supported by Mather Health System, and when you walk through, you'll see the place covers most needs for older adults, from those who live independently to those needing daily health care, memory care, or rehab. Residents here pick from studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments or even cottages with private bathrooms and wheelchair-accessible showers, and everything's put together to make life easier, like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, laundry, meal service, a movie theater, fitness centers, indoor and outdoor gardens, a swimming pool, and spaces for art and games. The Vincent Bove Health Center, which has a 5-star rating from CMS, offers skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care, plus short-term rehab for seniors who need help after a hospital visit but aren't ready to go home.

Care options stretch from help with basic living-like bathing, meals, and moving from bed to chair-to full nursing home care for those who need it, with nurses around up to 16 hours a day, 24-hour supervision, and an emergency call system in every room. Memory care is secure, with technology like bracelets and trained staff for people with Alzheimer's or other dementia, and they have staff who speak Spanish and an onsite doctor, nurses, and visiting therapists. Whether someone needs diabetic care, bladder help, or just occasional reminders, the staff handles it, with choices for short-term stays or aging in place. There's independent living for seniors who want to keep busy without worrying about housekeeping, meals, or transportation, but skilled nursing and memory care are also available, so moving out when care needs change isn't necessary.

The place keeps up social life, too: there are daily activities onsite and offsite, fitness and wellness programs like yoga and Tai Chi, community outings, games, music, gardening, and Sunday brunches in restaurant-style dining rooms, so folks stay connected and engaged. There's a beauty salon, wood shop, library, common rooms, Wi-Fi everywhere, and transportation for errands or appointments. For residents and families, Jefferson's Ferry offers support services like home sale help, move-in coordination, VA benefits consulting, and an affordability calculator to plan ahead, and the staff operates with conscience and skill, doing their best to show respect and kindness every day.

Bove Health Center's dedicated team can assist with higher needs-people who have problems moving around, need injections, or help with personal care-and there are always staff available for emergencies. They've got a community that isn't too big (about 60 residents), so it can feel personal and easy to know neighbors and staff, and the grounds are set up for both privacy and community socializing, with walking trails, outdoor common areas, and plenty of easy sitting spaces.

The environment is intentionally built to bring comfort, safety, and opportunities for both quiet and involvement, and you'll find activities for every interest, with meals designed to be healthy and tasty (including vegetarian or special diet options). Families can stay up to date through the community's blog, check pictures online, or visit for community events, and the front desk helps with questions. With everything from simple independent living to higher medical care in one setting, Jefferson's Ferry allows folks to stay put as needs change, backed by a skilled, caring team and a comfortable, clean environment.
