    Beautiful facility but dangerous negligence

I wanted to love this place - the grounds and building are beautiful, daytime staff, PT/OT and doctors were excellent, meals are good, activities and transportation helpful, and cable/phone/parking are included - my wife/mom enjoyed many things. But I also saw serious problems: rude and inattentive staff (night crew worse), staff on phones, racist remarks, smell of weed, rehab and infection-control concerns, ignored buzzers, missing property, and families having to intervene. Most painfully, nursing leadership admitted they hadn't been watching my mother; she was left alone, fell, broke her nose and later died. Overall, a lovely facility with strong positives, but I cannot recommend it without major, immediate improvements to safety, staffing and compassion.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed, with a substantial number of positive comments about the facility’s appearance, therapy services, community atmosphere, and many individual staff members contrasted by serious, recurring concerns about staffing reliability, supervision, and professionalism—particularly during night shifts.

Positive themes: Multiple reviews emphasize that the campus and buildings are attractive, well-maintained, and spacious. Families and residents frequently praise the grounds and describe the community as beautiful and heart-warming. The community atmosphere receives strong marks: residents and families report a supportive, friendly culture with caring staff who show compassion and go above and beyond for many residents. Rehabilitation services (PT/OT) are singled out as particularly good, and medical staff/doctors have a positive reputation. Meals are prepared on-site and are generally liked, with feeding assistance available when needed. Organized activities, transportation (for example, a bus to the mall), entertainment and a variety of social options (puzzles, bowling, computer use, acts) are noted as valuable offerings that contribute to resident quality of life. Practical amenities such as included cable and telephone, on-site kitchens in some units, ample parking, a parking garage, and security at entrances are also appreciated.

Negative themes and safety concerns: Several reviews raise serious safety and management issues that cannot be ignored. Multiple commenters describe problematic night-shift staffing: ignoring call buzzers, leaving residents unattended, and staff reportedly using phones (texting, video games) during shifts. There are accounts of personal belongings going missing and at least one severe incident in which a resident fell, broke her nose, never recovered, and later died—this review alleges insufficient oversight and that nursing leadership had not actually seen the resident. Some families felt the need to drop in unannounced in the evenings to check on loved ones. Other reports include unprofessional behavior (rudeness), isolated but serious allegations of racist remarks by staff, and a reported smell of marijuana on the premises. Infection-control and virus-procedure lapses are mentioned, and some reviewers describe the rehab unit or caregiving as neglectful. There are also notes about high costs (one reviewer cited a roughly $400/month food charge), limited cafeteria seating for visitors, and variation between units—some units are active and well-resourced while others have few activities and residents who spend long stretches alone in rooms.

Variation and inconsistency: A clear pattern is that experiences often vary by unit, shift, and even by staff member. Many families report exemplary care from nurses and aides and would recommend the community; others report neglectful behavior severe enough to involve HR or result in long-term harm. Management appears to be aware of some complaints (executive staff meetings are mentioned) but reviewers indicate that meetings do not always translate into consistent corrective action. This inconsistency—excellent daytime care and programming paired with concerning night-shift and isolated misconduct—creates a mixed overall picture.

Implications for prospective residents and families: The facility offers many strong features that appeal to seniors—beautiful grounds, good therapy services, on-site meals, activities, and a welcoming community. However, prospective residents and families should investigate specific concerns before committing: ask for details about night staffing ratios and supervision, incident reporting and resolution processes, background checks and training for staff, property-loss policies, infection-control protocols, and unit-level activity schedules. Visit during evenings and weekends to observe staffing and resident supervision first-hand, speak with current families about their experiences across different shifts and units, and get written explanations of all extra charges (such as food fees).

Conclusion: Masonic Care Community of New York appears to provide high-quality amenities, rehabilitation services, and a strong community for many residents, supported by numerous caring staff members. At the same time, multiple reviews document serious lapses in supervision and professionalism—especially overnight—that have led to distressing outcomes for some families. The decision to choose this community should weigh the facility’s strengths against these documented risks, and families should perform targeted due diligence focused on staffing, safety, and management responsiveness prior to moving in.

About Masonic Care Community of New York

Masonic Care Community of New York sits on a large 440-acre campus in Utica, NY, with ponds, streams, woods, and open spaces where wildlife can be seen, and people often comment on how the place feels calm and away from busy city streets, giving it kind of a country touch, and over the years the grounds have grown to include Acacia Village, Wiley Hall, the Health Pavilion, gardens like the Veterans Memorial, a chapel, walking paths, and spaces to gather or sit for a bit. The community's been around for over 100 years, guided by Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, truth, and integrity, and it offers different living options including independent retirement living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care for seniors who need help with daily activities or have Alzheimer's disease or dementia, with care that aims to keep people feeling comfortable and respected wherever they are in life.

The place organizes a full calendar of activities, and there's variety from exercise classes to Tai Chi and bowling, plus religious services, off-site trips, social gatherings, and special events throughout its spaces, so residents don't just sit inside all day. Every household has its own neighborhood manager who coordinates care, and private or semi-private rooms come with walk-in showers and full bathrooms, plus easy access to kitchens and living spaces so people can make a cup of coffee or just chat with friends. Skilled nursing services happen right at the Health Pavilion, with three full-time, on-site physicians and a healthcare team providing 24/7 care, and programs cover rehabilitation, therapies for speech, language, hydration, and even audiology. There's care for complex medical needs too like non-ambulatory care, diabetic care, and incontinence, and the team can also help with hospice, respite, palliative care, and rehabilitation that's either short-term after hospital stays or longer, depending on what's needed.

People mention the staff as joyful, helpful, and kind, making for a friendly atmosphere that stands out to many who visit, with residents saying community support and events like holiday concerts and fundraising are important, and visitors can get a map to see Acacia Village, Wiley Hall, or other areas as they walk around. The facility provides nutritious meals and dining services using quality ingredients, and there's transportation, parking, and complimentary rides for residents who need to get out for appointments or join off-site activities. Programs like Acacia Home Care and the Neighborhoods at Acacia Village offer help in people's homes, whether someone needs short-term or long-term care, and the campus includes a child care center for kids aged 8 weeks to 5 years, open to families in the area. There are services for day care, home health aide visits, and specialized amenities like the Snoezelen Room designed for sensory relaxation, plus medical research facilities on site.

The community recognizes the value of social, physical, mental, and emotional support, so care is more than just medical help-there are grounds to enjoy, common rooms for gatherings, and outdoor experiences built into daily life. The Masonic Care Community has a CMS rating for its nursing care and continues with fundraising, donations, and programs like the Pote Legacy Society and the 1893 Society, keeping ties strong between residents, staff, and supporters. The place doesn't boast or make big promises, but does focus on flexible and compassionate options, aiming to help seniors live with dignity, safety, and a sense of connection, all while still offering help if care needs change over time.
