    Caring spotless home highly recommended

I'm very pleased overall: the staff are caring, professional and bilingual, the home is spotless and well-maintained, meals are nutritious and tasty, meds are carefully managed, and there are daily activities, a weekly hairdresser, an on-site physician and a lovely Greek Orthodox chapel/community that make it feel like home. Staff and administration often go above and beyond, giving me peace of mind. One caveat - we experienced a communication/administration lapse, so families should stay involved - but I still highly recommend St. Michael's for elders not needing nursing-home care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for St. Michael's Home are strongly positive in the aggregate, with repeated praise for compassionate caregiving, a clean and organized environment, culturally specific programming, and family-like relationships between staff and residents. Many reviewers emphasize that the staff treat residents as family, go "above and beyond," and create a warm, home-like atmosphere. Multiple families report long, satisfactory stays and explicitly recommend the facility, citing peace of mind and gratitude for the level of personal attention provided.

Care quality and staff: One of the clearest themes is the high regard for staff quality and caregiving. Reviews repeatedly mention compassionate, attentive aides, nurses, and administrators, with staff who know residents' routines and whereabouts, effectively manage medications, and respond to daily living needs with dignity and respect. Several comments highlight specific attributes: staff encouraging mobility and socialization, preventing medication overdoses through careful oversight, maintaining safety during the COVID-19 lockdown, and providing reassurance to families. Staff members and some administrators are described as warm, professional, and devoted to resident well-being.

Facilities and medical support: Reviewers consistently praise the cleanliness and maintenance of the building and grounds. The physical environment is repeatedly characterized as serene and comfortable, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating (large dining room, front patio, backyard, recreation and community rooms). Clinically, the facility offers on-site medical conveniences that families value: a physician who comes regularly, in-house doctor's office, weekly hairdresser visits, and attentive medication practices. These on-site services reduce the need for off-campus trips and bolster family confidence in day-to-day care.

Dining, activities, and cultural life: Dining and social programming are prominent positives. Meals are described as nutritious and delicious, with staff in the kitchen singled out for attentiveness. Activities are suitable for elderly residents and include arts & crafts, daily participation opportunities, and holiday celebrations. A defining characteristic is the facility’s Greek cultural emphasis: on-site Greek Orthodox chapel and services, Greek food, holiday observances, bilingual staff, and community visits from the Greek Orthodox community create a culturally familiar environment for Greek-speaking residents. Many reviewers note this as a major strength — a culturally-centered "home away from home."

Management and communication: Most reviewers commend administration for organized processes, supportive leadership, and responsiveness; some specifically praise an administrator as "on top of her game." The admission process, financial organization, and policies (including COVID-19 precautions) receive positive mention. However, management and communication are also areas where notable negative reports appear. Several reviews allege serious failures: withholding critical information, failure to notify families about medical events, and, in one particularly grave set of claims, accusations directed at a director (named in the reviews) alleging manipulation, lying, suspected foul play, and financial exploitation. These are contrasted sharply by other reviews that describe the same administrator positively, indicating inconsistency or polarized experiences in leadership perception.

Negative incidents and patterns of concern: Although most feedback is positive, there are isolated but significant negative reports that merit attention. These include allegations of neglect (insufficient assistance with bathroom needs leading to urinary tract infections and emergency room visits), unprofessional or rude staff interactions, wrongful eviction claims, and poor handling of messages or phone communications. Some families described unresponsiveness to emails and complaints. Even though other reviewers explicitly state strong COVID safety records and no cases during lockdown, the negative accounts raise concerns about communication breakdowns and serious lapses in some residents' care or family notification. These negative reports appear to be fewer than the positive ones but are severe enough that they stand out as patterns to watch.

Overall assessment and suitability: St. Michael's Home appears to be an excellent option for elderly individuals who do not require nursing-home-level medical care and who will benefit from culturally focused programming, especially those of Greek heritage. Strengths include the compassionate, dedicated staff, strong cleanliness and safety standards, on-site medical and personal services, and a robust activities and dining program that promote socialization and quality of life. However, prospective families should be aware of mixed reports regarding management communication and a small number of serious allegations. Because those negative reports relate to critical areas (communication, neglect, alleged financial or administrative misconduct), families should ask direct questions about incident reporting, family notification policies, staffing levels, and escalation/complaint procedures when evaluating St. Michael's for a loved one.

In summary: The reviews convey a facility with many consistent strengths — attentive, loving staff; clean, organized grounds; excellent food and culturally appropriate programming; and on-site medical and personal services — which together foster resident comfort and family reassurance. At the same time, there are isolated but significant negative accounts about communication, alleged neglect, and administrative misconduct that suggest the importance of due diligence for prospective residents and their families. The dominant impression is positive, but potential residents should verify the facility's current policies and procedures around communication, incident handling, and oversight to address the reported concerns.

    About St Michael's Home

St Michael's Home is a non-profit adult care facility that has served older adults since 1958, keeping a Greek Orthodox environment and mission. The community sits close to restaurants, shops, Fay Park, and important hospitals like St. Johns Riverside and St. Joseph's Medical Center, so medical help and outings are nearby. The facility has assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's, retirement apartments, and independent living options, and people can find studio or one-bedroom apartments with different floor plans. The place has a secure Memory Care Wing for people with dementia, and staff provide health care like diabetic care, non-ambulatory care, incontinence care, along with help with daily tasks and medication management. Meals are provided every day, and there's a dining area where residents can eat together. There are common areas, indoor lounges, a Kafeneio/Coffee Lounge, a Taverna, a Beauty Salon, a gym, a Physical Therapy Room, and a Greek Orthodox chapel where people can attend devotional activities. Walking paths and garden spaces let residents go outside, and you'll see a focus on activities and programs that support faith, culture, and community. The staff is known for being caring and professional, and the buildings stay clean with room for more than 150 residents. The community offers many payment options and works to keep costs clear for families. St Michael's Home has earned high ratings in resident satisfaction and activities, placing in the top 8% among similar communities, and it has a community score of 8.9 for overall quality. The facility offers round-the-clock supervision and can support many needs as people age, so residents can stay in one place as their care level changes. As the needs of Greek American seniors grow, St Michael's Home is expanding with a state-of-the-art new campus in Uniondale, Long Island, called the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Campus, to help more people and offer higher levels of care with the same focus on compassion, faith, and a home-like feeling that's been the goal since the beginning, and you can view a virtual tour online to see more about the future site. The facility continues to update and add new wings, keeps improving buildings and services, and seeks to provide a safe, nurturing, and respectful place where residents can live with dignity and love, whether they moved here from Greece years ago or have grown up in the United States.
