    Beautiful campus, friendly staff, pricey

I live(d) here and overall the campus is gorgeous, very clean and well kept - bright, roomy apartments, friendly staff who know you by name, and plenty of amenities (indoor/outdoor pools, exercise room, clubs, trips and an on-site medical clinic/shuttle). Dining is restaurant-style with many choices, though several residents said the food has declined. It's expensive with high buy-ins, long waiting lists and a pay-up-front model; assisted/specialty care and management communication have been uneven in some cases. Construction and expansion promise more options, but I'd weigh the costs and contract guarantees carefully. Overall warm, active community with attentive staff, but plan for potential surprises around long-term care.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews of Matthews Glen are strongly mixed but lean toward positive for independent living lifestyle and physical facilities, while showing consistent concerns around long-term care guarantees, management, and some significant care quality incidents. Many reviewers praise the campus, activities, amenities, and the friendly social environment. However, a recurring theme is that independent living at Matthews Glen can be excellent while reliance on the community for assisted living or skilled nursing is less certain. Prospective residents and families repeatedly reported a warm, active community with great initial impressions that may not extend to later-stage care.

Facilities and campus: A major strength cited across reviews is the physical campus and amenities. Multiple reviewers described gorgeous brick buildings, a new expansion/brand-new campus under construction, well-kept scenic grounds, and a southern-estate vibe. There are numerous on-site amenities: several pools (indoor, outdoor, heated, salt/chlorinated variants noted), an exercise room with on-site fitness staff, library, trips and outings, and restaurant-style dining rooms. Apartments receive high marks for being clean, bright, and well-maintained; many reviews mention a wide selection of floor plans, customization options, and attractive, modern finishes. Secure entrances, pet-friendliness, and ample social spaces (though some reviewers say community meeting spaces are small) are repeatedly noted.

Staff and community life: Staff receive largely positive remarks; many reviewers praise friendly, familiar staff who know residents by name, attentive waitstaff, and helpful tour explanations. The community is described as active and social, with abundant clubs, exercise classes, day trips (even international trips mentioned), and a strong community spirit. Transportation services — a shuttle/van for doctor appointments and scheduled trips — are valued. Several reviews emphasize that residents love the social life and feel safe and cared for in independent living.

Dining and housekeeping: Dining opinions are mixed. Numerous reviewers commend the dining experience as restaurant-style with multiple entrée choices, attentive service, and very good meals—especially early on. Conversely, a substantial number of reviews report a decline in food quality over time, with some calling the food poor and noting inconsistent kitchen responsiveness. Housekeeping and unit cleanliness are generally praised: units are described as clean, bright, and well-maintained.

Medical care and assisted living concerns: This is the area with the greatest divergence. Many reviewers appreciate that Matthews Glen has an on-site medical center with doctors and nurses and a medical wing for more intensive care; some say medical staff are knowledgeable and helpful. However, multiple reviews raise serious concerns about assisted living and skilled nursing availability and quality. Reported problems include waiting lists for assisted living, failures to provide promised care, slow or inadequate responses to medical emergencies (including at least one allegation of failure to send a resident to the hospital after a fall that led to severe consequences), and poor cleanliness or management in nursing areas. Several reviewers explicitly state they would not trust Matthews Glen for long-term care and caution that the community expanded before ensuring sufficient care capacity.

Management, contracts, and finances: Financial model and contracts are another consistent theme. Many reviewers describe high upfront costs, significant monthly fees, and pay-up-front models that can be a barrier. On the positive side, some reviewers note options such as credits for long-term care policies, money-back options, and lower buy-in structures for certain situations. On the negative side, there are multiple accounts of management communication problems, unresponsive reservation phones, and perceptions of incompetence. Several reviewers warn that verbal promises may not be honored, that contract terms can allow management to change rules, and that residents may waive rights — leading some to advise consulting an attorney before signing. There are also reports that the organization prioritized expansion and sales growth ahead of bolstering care services, which contributed to concerns about future assurance of care.

Operational issues and variability: Reviewers frequently point out variability across time and departments. Service speed (maintenance response) is sometimes slow; dining reservation systems can be unresponsive; COVID-era restrictions were handled in ways some found overly limiting. While many reviews praise staff and care, there are isolated but serious reports of rude or uncaring behavior and poor clinical care that contrast sharply with otherwise positive staff mentions. This variability appears to be a key pattern: experiences depend heavily on timing, specific staff, and whether the need is independent-living or higher-acuity care.

Synthesis and guidance: Matthews Glen appears to be a strong option for independent living residents seeking a polished, activity-rich, socially engaging campus with excellent grounds, attractive apartments, multiple pools and fitness options, and many staff who are friendly and attentive. The new expansion, plentiful activities, and on-site clinic are notable strengths. However, the reviews also reveal red flags that prospective residents and family members should investigate carefully: the consistency and quality of assisted living and skilled nursing services, the specifics of contract language and fee structure, historical trends in dining and maintenance responsiveness, and how management handles emergencies and care transitions. Given the mixed but significant reports of poor nursing care and contractual risk, it is prudent for prospective residents to tour thoroughly, ask pointed questions about waiting lists and guarantees for higher-level care, request recent staffing and incident records, review contracts with legal counsel, and seek references from current residents (especially those who have transitioned from independent to assisted living within the community).

Bottom line: For independent-living seniors who prioritize amenities, social life, and a well-kept campus, Matthews Glen often delivers an excellent lifestyle. For those whose primary concern is guaranteed, high-quality assisted living or skilled nursing care in the future, reviewers provided enough cautionary testimony to merit careful due diligence before committing.
