    Compassionate staff beautiful community pricey

I love the caring, dedicated staff - compassionate, proactive, and they gave my family real peace of mind while arranging care for my wife. The community is beautiful, clean, with nice rooms, grounds, dining, activities and convenient transportation. That said, management communication is inconsistent, staffing is often stretched/overworked (care can be uneven), and it's pricey (around $175/day); COVID also cut back activities. Overall I'd recommend it for the excellent staff and atmosphere if you can afford it, but be prepared for administrative and staffing hiccups.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive about Jennings McCall Center's physical environment and the quality of direct care, while revealing recurring operational concerns. Reviewers consistently praise the facility’s cleanliness, modern/up‑to‑date appearance, and attractive grounds — many specifically mentioning the central fountain, gazebo, patios, and horseshoe layout that make the campus inviting and accessible. Apartment options receive favorable notes: one‑bedrooms with full kitchens, balconies, individual climate controls, and well‑arranged floor plans were described as roomy and comfortable. Several reviewers highlighted practical conveniences such as covered carports, onsite medical services, and an on‑site transportation van that supports outings and medical appointments.

The strongest and most frequent praise goes to the caregiving staff. Reviews repeatedly describe staff as kind, compassionate, attentive, and knowledgeable. Multiple accounts emphasize excellent communication with families, proactive updates about residents’ physical and emotional status, and coordinated transitions (including respite care and assistance moving between levels of care). Many families report a high level of trust and peace of mind, noting that long‑tenured staff members and specific staff (named in some reviews) provided dependable, top‑notch support. Memory care and assisted living are cited as appropriate and well staffed in many narratives, and several reviewers said they would highly recommend Jennings McCall Center on the basis of direct care and staff responsiveness.

Dining and activities earn mixed but generally favorable comments. The dining program is described as restaurant‑style with flexible meal plans, and many reviewers enjoyed the food — one reviewer even reported weight gain from good meals. At the same time, a subset of reviewers mentioned inconsistent meal temperature or dishes they did not like; some improvements reportedly occurred when kitchen staff made special efforts. Activities such as bingo, exercise classes, music, and outings are regularly offered and considered meaningful by many residents, although a few noted limited participation for residents with partial blindness or mobility issues.

Value and operations: several reviewers emphasize that Jennings McCall Center offers reasonable pricing and perceived good value, especially because there is no buy‑in fee and billing adjusts with changes in care level. The facility’s proximity and convenience were key factors for local families. However, there is not unanimous agreement on cost—at least one reviewer labeled the daily rate as overpriced. Operational positives include thorough assessments and good medication management and doctor transport, but some families experienced longer assessment timelines (an assessment process that took five days instead of the expected couple of days) and slow callbacks or admission delays tied to a long waiting list.

The most significant and recurring negatives concern management and staffing stability. Multiple reviewers reported management problems, inconsistent administrative communication with families, and instances of rude or dismissive managerial behavior. Staffing issues appear in two related forms: frequent staff changes/high turnover and times of understaffing that left workers over‑tasked. Several reviewers worried about hiring and training practices and observed that the company’s oversight did not always address management problems quickly. A few reviews described more serious operational lapses during epidemic/COVID periods, including concerns about employees working while sick and unsafe conditions. Admissions policies are occasionally restrictive — some reviewers reported the facility would not accept residents needing dialysis or certain levels of skilled nursing — which is important for families to verify up front.

Patterns and practical takeaways: the aggregate picture is of a high‑quality, well‑appointed community with outstanding frontline caregivers and strong care coordination, offset by periodic administrative and staffing challenges that can affect consistency of service. If you are considering Jennings McCall Center, the reviews suggest you will likely find a clean, attractive campus, thoughtful apartment layouts, reliable transportation and medical support, and a caring staff that delivers good daily care. At the same time, it’s prudent to confirm current staffing levels, turnover rates, specific admission policies (e.g., acceptance of dialysis or skilled nursing needs), the expected timeline for assessments and move‑in, and how management communicates with families. Asking about recent staffing changes, food handling/quality procedures, and how the community handled COVID‑era protections may help set expectations and highlight whether the operational issues mentioned in reviews have been resolved.

In summary, Jennings McCall Center is frequently recommended for its compassionate staff, clean and attractive facilities, and breadth of services across independent, assisted, and memory care. Several reviewers call it a top choice for families seeking peace of mind. The main caveats are recurring administrative/management complaints and periodic understaffing or turnover — factors that can affect consistency. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong caregiving and physical environment against these operational risks and verify up‑to‑date information directly with the community before deciding.

    About Jennings McCall Center

Jennings McCall Center sits on grounds with a long history, originally set up back in 1922 as the Masonic & Eastern Star Home, and it still keeps those Masonic principles of brotherly love, truth, and charity at the heart of everything; today, it's a retirement community where folks can get independent living, assisted living, memory care, respite care, and progressive care, and the management team runs things with an executive director, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and service plan coordinators, plus directors for meals, resident life, and wellness. Residents find plenty to do, whether trying out exercise classes, joining in on flower arranging or painting, playing trivia games, or heading out for group trips to places like Seaside or the Chalk Festival, and for holidays everyone gets involved with events like themed parties, light parades, or an outdoor community egg hunt; there's live music, tribute events, and even special fundraisers like the Purple Party. The memory care program includes activities tailored for people with different needs, such as painting, bingo, gentle crafts, and celebrations through the year, and families always have ways to visit with their loved ones, even through a visitation station. Residents can gather in over 3,425 square feet of private and outdoor meeting space, spread across two rooms - the largest holds up to 200 people and covers 3,000 square feet while a second sits at 425 square feet, and amenities include tables, linens, wheelchair access, catering, and alcohol if desired, though paid parking is the arrangement. There's always something happening, like scam prevention workshops, holiday bazaars, and festive meals for holidays like St. Patrick's, Easter, and Mother's Day, and everyone enjoys extras like a beauty shop, life enrichment programs, geriatric clinic, and free chair massages. Dining and catering are both available for residents and events, and the staff support everyone's dignity, privacy, and choices, working to build a calm, family atmosphere where those who live there can keep busy if they like or find a quiet space for themselves; views from residents' rooms add to the sense of peace. The original building is now leased to McMenamins, which runs it as a hotel and restaurant called McMenamins Grand Lodge, adding a touch of local history to the area. Jennings McCall Center works closely with nearby communities that offer similar services, like assisted living, Alzheimer's care, and nursing care, providing options for those who may need different kinds of support as needs change. Residents or families can use forms to sign up for newsletters, classified ads, services, or the eEdition; there's a process for sharing public notices, too. While there's no fax number listed and the description of specific care types and services is a bit broad, Jennings McCall Center remains a strong choice for seniors who want both assistance and a real community life, with dedicated care, lots of activities, and a place that feels purpose-built for comfort and companionship.
