    Spacious apartments, great people, concerns

I live here and appreciate the huge, comfortable apartments (balcony and kitchen), delicious meals, 24/7 coffee/snacks, on-site movie theater, and an active, welcoming resident community. The staff are kind, attentive, supportive of volunteers, and medication management and activities are generally reliable. My concerns: the building and grounds need cosmetic updates, landscaping noise is excessive, and short-staffing/underpaying has caused communication lapses and at times serious monitoring problems (including a fall). Overall I'm happy and would recommend it for the people, food, and atmosphere despite operational issues.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive regarding the interpersonal, clinical, and day-to-day resident experience, while raising consistent concerns about the physical plant, staffing stability, and recent declines in certain aspects of care.

Care quality and staff: The most frequent and emphatic praise centers on staff. Many reviewers describe the staff as caring, kind, attentive and respectful; staff are reported to know residents by name, respond quickly, support volunteers, and remain involved during activities. Several accounts call the care "spectacular" or "wonderful," noting good medication management and resident-focused attention. At the same time, there are troubling reports of staffing shortages and inconsistent attendance. Those shortages are linked to long waits for assistance (for example long wait times for a commode) and at least one serious adverse outcome described as a fall resulting in death. Other reviews report incontinence/bed-wetting incidents and calls into question monitoring levels. There are also allegations of staff being underpaid or unpaid, staff stopping showing up, and even theft of hours — issues that, if accurate, could materially affect staffing reliability and morale.

Facilities and environment: Reviews consistently call out a contrast between attractive, well-maintained features and an aging building. Positive notes include a beautiful atrium and grounds, generally clean public areas, comfortable and large apartments with balconies and kitchenettes, accessible bathrooms, and on-site amenities such as a movie theater. Meals and snack offerings (including 24/7 coffee, mocha, cookies and ice cream) are mentioned favorably. However, multiple reviewers describe the building as old, tired, and depressing in parts; public areas and some sections need cosmetic updates or major renovation. Noise from landscaping twice weekly is cited as an unnecessary disturbance. Location impressions vary — some praise the SE Portland location as convenient, while others say the surrounding area is not well kept.

Programs, activities and training: Activity programming is a clear strength. Reviews mention an active activities director and numerous engaging activities, with staff supporting and participating in events. Volunteers report enjoyable, well-supported experiences. The facility also appears to host a strong CNA/training program, with instructors (named Linda and Ginna) praised for their quality teaching. Reviewers mention clinical opportunities in NICU and emergency departments and strong hospital relationships that help students place into hospitals and form long-term connections with classmates. This educational aspect and active programming contribute to a warm, homey community feel and strong family involvement.

Management and communication: Feedback about management and communication is mixed. Many reviews applaud clear, respectful communication and responsiveness from staff and administration. Conversely, some reviewers report unclear or no information provided by staff in certain situations, and describe a recent drop or decline in service quality and satisfaction. Serious administrative concerns are raised in a few reviews regarding payroll practices and employee treatment; such claims point to potential systemic issues that could affect staffing continuity and quality of care.

Patterns and recommendations: The dominant pattern is a facility with strong human-centered care — compassionate staff, solid activity and training programs, and many amenities that support daily life — juxtaposed with an aging facility and intermittent operational problems tied to staffing and management. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong interpersonal care and programming against the building’s need for updates and the occasional reports of lapses in monitoring and staffing. For families particularly concerned about continuous high-level monitoring or a newly renovated environment, it would be prudent to ask administrators about current staffing levels, turnover, payroll practices, recent incidents (falls), and plans for facility updates. For those prioritizing warm staff relationships, active programming, strong training programs, and a sizeable, comfortable apartment, Holgate Center appears to deliver many desirable qualities, though some risk remains tied to the reported recent decline and administrative/staffing issues.

    About Holgate Center

Holgate Center sits on seven acres in southeast Portland, and folks there can choose between independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care, plus memory care for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, all of it happening all day and night, seven days a week, which is good for folks and their families who need peace of mind. The campus feels peaceful, with walking paths, courtyards, big gardens, and there's a strong sense of community, and people often talk about feeling welcome when they first walk through the doors. Residents can pick from semi-private or private rooms, and there are affordable studio and one-bedroom apartments for those needing low-income senior housing.

The staff aims to help with everything from dressing and bathing to medication and wound care, and nurses are around 24 hours with help for diabetic care, mobility needs, and day-to-day personal support, always using emergency call systems if something goes wrong. Meals are included, and there's a big focus on having healthy options for different diets, with housekeeping and laundry taken care of regularly. People can use cable TV in their rooms, Wi-Fi in common spaces, and if they want to get out, transportation is available for shopping trips, appointments, and group outings, which are part of a busy calendar that includes crafts, exercise classes, music, religious services, education programs, and even off-site devotional events.

There are on-site church services, an activities and game room, fitness center, salon and barbershop, and property safety with a sprinkler system throughout the buildings, and every apartment has features to help people with walkers or wheelchairs, including accessible showers. Holgate Center provides extra services like podiatry, occupational therapy, and memory support, with structured routines to help prevent wandering or confusion for those who need a little more supervision. People can bring their own things for comfort since there are kitchenettes in some units, and maintenance takes care of the rest, with washers and dryers nearby.

Besides long-term stays, respite care is offered for short-term needs so caregivers can take a break. Holgate Center takes long-term care insurance. It's part of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows network, which has several similar communities across the U.S. and Canada, from skilled nursing homes in Maine and California to senior apartments in North Dakota and outreach programs for children and families in California. Holgate Center provides a calm place with a big backyard and neighbors who often become friends, and people here feel they can keep their dignity and independence for as long as possible with the help available on this non-profit campus. There's a simple website at holgatecenter.org where more about services, amenities, and living options can be found.
