    Caring staff, some service issues

I chose this small, clean, family-like community for my mom and I'm impressed by the loving, compassionate staff, spacious rooms, good dining options, fun activities and helpful leadership that made the move smooth. Staff genuinely care, encourage participation, and are responsive much of the time - meals can be delivered and there's nearby memory care if needed. My only concerns are inconsistent communication, occasional delays in call-button/medication/grooming responses and rare security lapses (theft of dog tags), which require families to advocate. Overall I'm satisfied and would recommend this community, but stay engaged.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries for Callahan Village Retirement and Assisted Living is predominantly positive about the quality of care, staff compassion, and the facility’s environment, but there are consistent and significant concerns reported around communication, safety responsiveness, dining quality, and occasional lapses in staff training.

Care quality and staff: Many reviewers emphasize that care staff are gentle, compassionate, knowledgeable, and go out of their way to meet resident needs. Multiple accounts praise individual care partners, kitchen staff, and housekeeping as caring and invested in residents’ wellbeing. Several families noted that staff helped guide them through transitions and that the Executive Director demonstrates visible leadership and a passion for excellence, with strengths in staff training and open-door mentorship. These positive reports often cite attentive caregiving, good family updates, support during the move-in process, and overall peace of mind for families.

Facilities, cleanliness, and setting: The facility is repeatedly described as clean, attractive, and well-maintained. Reviewers often note a welcoming, family-like atmosphere and a range of social programming including puzzles, movies, educational conferences, and off-site excursions. Some residents and families reported satisfaction with room size as adequate and appreciated the availability of independent cottages. The location is viewed positively by some (including proximity to the VA Hospital), and many reviewers reported favorable first impressions and endorsement by family or word-of-mouth.

Dining and activities: Activity programming and social gatherings receive consistent praise — new residents frequently report being welcomed and participating in activities. However, dining receives mixed feedback: several reviewers love the food, mention good variety and enjoyment of meals, while a number of others report poor food quality, meals that are overly carbohydrate-heavy with little protein, and meals that are not fresh. This split suggests variability in kitchen performance or expectation mismatches across residents.

Safety, communication, and management concerns: While many reviewers highlight prompt and attentive staff, a substantial cluster of reviews raise serious concerns about inconsistent communication, medication management problems, delayed call-button responses, and even falls. Some families reported long wait times for assistance at night and felt the need for persistent advocacy to secure timely grooming or medication administration. There are also reports of untrained or inexperienced staff and perceptions that management can be defensive or offer excuses when problems are raised. Security concerns appear intermittently in multiple reviews, with theft of small valuables (dog tags) mentioned more than once, affecting the overall perception of safety.

Patterns and overall assessment: The dominant themes are strong, compassionate caregiving and a clean, activity-rich environment juxtaposed with recurring operational issues around communication, training consistency, and safety responsiveness. Leadership and training are cited positively by several reviewers, indicating efforts to maintain quality, yet other reviews describe situations that suggest uneven staff competency or enforcement of procedures. Dining experiences and physical layout (for example, difficult access to the dining room in bad weather, or small living rooms/kitchen proportions) are practical considerations that vary by resident priorities. Families considering Callahan Village should weigh the many positive reports of staff devotion, cleanliness, and social life against documented concerns regarding communication, medication handling, call-button response times, and isolated security incidents. Prospective residents and families may want to ask management directly about staff training, call-response metrics, medication procedures, security measures, and recent steps taken to address the specific negative issues raised in reviews.
