    Resort-like community with attentive staff

I'm very pleased with this recently remodeled, resort-like senior living community close to home - clean, well-organized with a lovely chapel, spacious courtyard and gazebo for bird-watching. The restaurant-style dining offers plentiful, varied meals I enjoyed, and activities/outings (exercise, Bible study, movies, shopping, fishing) keep residents social and engaged. The nurses, caregivers and on-site doctors are attentive and compassionate - Courtney in admissions and Carrie in Social Services were especially helpful - and staff truly treat residents like family. Rooms are a bit small and there have been occasional staffing shortages, but my parent is settling in and I highly recommend this place.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with repeated emphasis on compassionate, attentive care and a clean, well-maintained facility. Multiple reviewers highlight exceptional nursing and caregiving — staff are described as treating residents like family, being friendly and responsive, and providing strong end-of-life support. Clinical support is reinforced by on-site medical coverage (a doctor almost daily) and routine interdisciplinary contact: reviewers specifically note regular meetings with social workers, nurses, and the activities director. Administration and social services staff are frequently named and praised for being helpful and responsive (examples include Courtney in admissions and Carrie in Social Services), which contributes to families feeling supported during placement and transitions.

Facility cleanliness and appearance are prominent positive themes. Reviews describe rooms and common areas as very clean and orderly, a resort-like building with a large courtyard, gazebo, and garden areas where residents can watch birds, squirrels, and other wildlife. Renovations and recent remodeling have been mentioned positively — dining hall completion and refreshed lounge areas for visitors are noted — though renovations also appear in the cons list as a potential source of temporary disruption. Amenities such as a lovely chapel, restaurant-style cafeteria, and well-organized facilities receive consistent praise.

Dining and nutrition are generally viewed favorably: many reviewers report excellent, plentiful, and well-planned meals with a wide variety of choices and appealing presentation. The cafeteria and dining hall are described as clean and restaurant-style. At the same time, several reviews raise qualifying concerns about dietary experience — in particular, pureed diets that limit the food experience for some residents and reports of low appetite despite the food looking good. These comments suggest that while the standard menu and service are strong, diet texture and individual appetite issues sometimes reduce enjoyment for certain residents.

Activities and social life are another major strength cited across reviews. Residents are described as happier and more active after moving in — enjoying coffee with friends, exercise classes, Bible study, chair exercises, movies, bingo, crafts, and occasional entertainers. The community facilitates outings such as local restaurants, shopping trips, and fishing at Possum Lake, and provides bus transportation for appointments, all of which support social engagement and quality of life. Reviewers note that the social environment and programming help residents form new friendships and feel more connected compared with their prior situations.

Notable patterns of concern are relatively limited but consistent: a few reviewers mention staffing shortages even while praising individual caregivers, indicating occasional staffing strain or variability in coverage. Some rooms are described as a little small, which may be a consideration for prospective residents comparing floor plans. Renovations in progress and pandemic-era visitation/isolation restrictions were also mentioned — isolation prevented in-room visits in at least one report — suggesting that exceptional circumstances (e.g., infection-control measures or construction) have impacted some families. Finally, dietary texture (pureed meals) and reduced appetite for some residents are specific areas where the resident experience could be improved.

In sum, the reviews present Sarah A Todd Memorial Home as a caring, well-run community with strong clinical support, compassionate staff, attractive facilities, and robust programming that noticeably improves residents' social lives and mood. The primary caveats are occasional staffing constraints, smaller room sizes, ongoing renovation-related disruption, and specific dietary/texture issues for some residents. Families seeking a community with attentive caregiving, active engagement opportunities, and clean, amenity-rich surroundings will likely find the facility highly recommended by current reviewers; those with strong preferences about room size or specialized dietary needs should inquire directly about room options and nutrition accommodations before moving in.
